"On this path effort never goes to waste, and there is no failure. Even a little effort towards spiritual awareness will protect you from the greatest fear" -Bhagavad Gita- . Contrary to its name, backbends aren't really about bending the back. It's about finding space and length in the front body. Instead of thinking about the bend in the spine, what's helped me a lot is to think about (and feel) the stretch in the front body - from the front and side hips, through the abdomen, the lifted sternum and length in the neck - an internal line of energy that goes all the way from the perineum (think mula bandha or root chakra) to the crown of the head. . Since it requires a deep stretch in the area around the heart, it's known to make us feel vulnerable, breathless and panicky (sometimes even the feeling of suffocating). The practice is learning to breathe through it. To understand that the feelings that arise are simply unconscious emotional reactions based on cumulated past experiences. It is a reaction. Beyond that, if we can move past the need to act on the emotions, there is peace. . Video sped up 2x.
