I hc that Chrissy used to have a crush on Steve (because who doesn’t uh?) before dating Jason, not a serious crush or anything just a “he’s kinda cute” thing. And then Steve starts to date Nancy Wheeler and she starts to date Jason and she forgets about him.
So, one summer day after breaking up with Jason and becoming friends with Eddie, she and Eddie are hanging out at lovers’ lake, smoking weed and talking. Just a normal evening for them. Until suddenly, Steve Harrington walks by and he waves at Eddie and Eddie waves back. Chrissy turns her head towards Eddie, astonished.
“I can’t believe you’re friends with Steve Harrington.” She says.
“I wouldn’t call us friends, we are acquaintances, we’ve hanged out a few times because of Henderson. “ Eddie replies, shaking his head.
Chrissy is still looking at him with wide eyes, not being able to process the thought of Eddie and Steve hanging out. And then, she remembers she used to fancy him a few years ago and she tells Eddie that.
And well, Eddie starts to feel a little jealous because if she liked Steve Harrington and then Jason Carver, there’s absolutely no way she’d like someone like him. He’s the polar opposite of those guys, he’s not athletic nor popular. He’s not even that charismatic (not that he’d ever admit that he finds Steve anything else that annoying, he’s got a reputation to maintain, and befriending jocks would ruin it). So yup, he feels a bit insecure, but he’s not going to tell her so instead he tries to joke about it.
“It looks like you have a type Cunningham.”
“What do you mean?” She asks.
“Tall, atletic, popular jocks.” He tries to explain, each word twisting his heart painfully. “First Steve and then Carver. At least Harrington is not an asshole.”
He avoids her gaze while saying this, fearing that if he looks at her, she’d see straight through him.
“I see.” Chrissy replies, biting her lip. “Well, I did used to have a type. Not anymore hopefully.”
“Oh. And what is your type now?”
“Mmm… I still like taller guys. Maybe longer hair, a bit rougher on the edges but kind. The kind of guy who likes rock and dnd but who also likes to goof around and make me smile.” She takes a drag on the joint. “Oh, and he has to like smoking weed too, but not too much. Just to relax once in a while.”
And although Eddie may be a little oblivious to some things, he doesn’t miss the point in what she’s saying, but he’s feeling a bit insecure still. Maybe she’s describing another person entirely and he’s just too delusional. After all, she’s Chrissy Cunningham and he’s Eddie Munson, there’s no way she would fall for someone like him, right? So, instead of acting on it, he jokes:
“Careful Cunningham or else I’m going to start thinking you’re describing me.”
Chrissy looks at him straight in the eye, serious in a way he hadn’t ever seen her be.
“I…” She starts. She looks at him one more time and the raises her knees to hug herself. “Listen, it doesn’t have to mean anything if you don’t want to. We’ll pretend I haven’t said anything and move on.”
“I love you.” He blurts out.
And she smiles at him, so wide he’s afraid her cheeks are going to pop. God he has never been more happy in his entire life.
