Credere (M Eel) & Pearl (F Mermaid)
It was the annual celebratory ball where all of the kingdoms in the Diabase part of the sea were to attend. Music played happily, glasses clinked, bubbles popped, and laughter echoed all around the room to promise a lovely evening, yet Princess Pearl waded nervously in place as her father King Agate made the announcement that she and her sister Chlora were making their grand debut into society. Her twin sister Chlora was ecstatic at the news while Pearl dreaded felt unusually chilled at the thought. Chlora had all the right makings to be well received by the public with her hair a long and dark as volcanic lava, deep green eyes, well defined curves, and a bubbly spirit that matched well with her multicolored mandarin tail. Pearl had no doubt that Chlora would be the bell of the ball and that she would undoubtedly find a well-suited match by the end of the night while Pearl did not have such high hopes for herself mostly because she was so terrible at speaking up for herself.
She did not possess the same loud and bubbly energy as her sister Chlora nor did she possess the same elegant magnitude her mother had despite resembling her the most. Pearl was paler than sea foam, long limbed, thin, petite, and hardly possessed any coloring gave for the holographic hew that dipped into her delicate tailfins that fluttered when she moved, but also tangled if she wasn’t careful, as was the curse for every beta tail, however, it made her feel especially clumsy when she was trying to be careful. It was especially horrible for her since she could hardly see in the brightly lit room and the last thing she wanted to do was spin around blind at the hand of some stranger. All she wanted to do was hide away in her room and weave her sea lace in peace. However, with both Chlora’s insistence and Jasper’s teasing, she begrudgingly agreed to attend the ball. Now that she was here, she wished she would have done more to refuse even if it was a futile attempt.
She’d barely heard her name when her brother gave her a gentle tug as he escorted his two sisters on his arm down gilded path that made its descent into the ballroom. “Chin up, Pearl.” Jasper whispered. “They all want to get a good look at your face.”
“I don’t want them to see my face.” She hissed forlornly back as his arm carefully slipped out of hers and both she and Chlora were left out in the open and for the taking. They curtsied as practiced, and the moment they raised their heads, multitudes of men with a handful of women all approached Chlora. Her sweet sister shined in the moment and soaked up the attention like a sponge and Pearl was happy to slip away to give her sister all the attention, however, as she tried to slip away she bumped into someone and their food fell onto her scales.
“I am so sorry!” She gasped in horror as tried to quickly smooth away the food from her scales as she turned around. Pearl had to squint up at the massive mershark before her and felt her heart nearly stop. He thick blonde hair and big blue eyes that blinked down at her as if he hadn’t seen her until she spoke up and had a grin that was far too wide and made her tailfins tremble.
“What’s this?” His voice was thick and smelled of the horrid food he’d been eating as he reached a large hand down to grab her hand. “An invitation for a dance for spilling my food, little beta?”
“N – N – No –” She tried to shake her head and pull herself free, but his grip was much stronger than her own and dwarfed her hand in his hold. He chuckled at her refusal and looked far too eager to whisk her off to the dance floor when static blossomed between them and Pearl was tactfully removed from the mershark’s hand only to fall into the hands of a different stranger. She gasped as her back landed against the firm chest of a lean stranger with long dark fingers that rested on her hip and an electric silver tail that wrapped securely and protectively over her own.
“She’s already promised me, her first dance, Gabbro.” A warm tenor like sunshine rays dancing on the water with the fierce warning of knives tickles her ear as he pulled her away. Pearl dared a glance at her rescuer and wasn’t sure if she needed take her changes with the shark or the conger eel that held her in his arms. He had a grin with teeth like daggers and silver eyes that glinted mischievously.”
“Credere.” The mershark gritted out irritably. “I should have known you’d actually come to this year’s party.”
“Come now, Gabbro, I’ve done nothing wrong.” His voice was a constant tease with a song daring to stir the waters.
“Save for steal my partner for the evening.” Gabbro growled out. “I should cut you open for such an act.”
“It isn’t stealing if the lady already told you no, Gabbro.” Credere waggled a long-clawed finger at the mershark without so much as fear in his eyes as he chuckled. “Isn’t that right, little Pearl?”
Pearl could only gawk like guppy at the eel that held her as it took her a minute to register his words and quickly close her mouth and nod her head. “See? The princess here would much rather go with me, Gabbro.” His chuckle was as mischievous as silverfish and Pearl hated the way a thrill of excitement ran through her to hear her. “Come now, little pearl, let’s get out of here before the big brute throws a tantrum.”
The mershark growled lowly and Pearl shivered at the dark look in his eye as he glared after the eel that still held her. “I’ll remember this, Credere.”
“I’m certain you will, Gabbro.” He chuckled without a care in the world as he disentangled his tail from hers. “However, we both know you will have much better chances at finding someone else tonight than I shall.”
Before Pearl could ask him what he meant by that, Credere tactfully whisked her away from the ballroom as another song played for the others dance to and away from the light. He hummed softly in her ear with a strange tune that calmed her wavering heart as he carefully took them to the library. It was dark with only a few low light lamps on and Pearl was most grateful for the reprieve.
“Thank you, sir.” She sagged in relief as her whole body thrummed in happiness to be away from the party. “I don’t think I can thank you enough for saving me.”
“It’s just Gabbro. His teeth are bigger than his bite.” He scoffed lightly as he aided her in taking a sea before curling his tail around the bottom of the chair like an anchor only to spiral around it so their faces could only see what another.
“S-Still.” She gulped and felt slightly unnerved by the silver eyes that blinked at her. “I don’t know what would have happened had you not showed up.”
“Gabbro would have only danced with you until he found his next partner for the evening, little Pearl.” He gave a shrug and propped his elbow on the arm of the chair as he studied her. “You just happened to be the next pretty thing that caught his eye tonight.”
Her face warmed and her ear fins and tail fluttered at hearing this man say she was pretty and found that she couldn’t look away from him as much as she wanted to. “T – Then he should have looked for my sister, she’s far prettier than I.”
“Only if you care for the ostentatious sort.” He hummed rather suggestively before gently poking the end of her nose with his finger. “I could hardly look at her while you were there.”
“W – W – W- W- W- W- Whatever could you mean.” Her hand went to cover her nose and gave her just enough coverage to hide her blushing face and flapping gills. “Chlora is radiant and colorful and would make a suitable match for anyone!”
“I completely disagree.” His lips poked out in a pout as his long fingers gently removed her hand from her face while the other carefully curled her long white hair behind her ear. “You are far more radiant and colorful than anyone else I saw tonight.”
Her eyes widened and her gills closed as she held her breath. The eel hadn’t moved closer or away from her, yet Pearl found that she wished him to do one or other to either give her air to breath again or to take it away with those mischievous lips.
“The most radiant pearl I have ever seen.” His voice was low and appreciative and Pearl hardly knew how to take these sort of comments let alone where to look. “When I heard that King Agate was finally releasing his precious gems into the world, I couldn’t help but wonder what the hidden Pearl looked like.”
The fluttering in her heart ceased at hearing the wretched title that stuck with her all these years and she deflated under his gaze. “It seems you know quite a lot about who I am, yet I hardly know much about you.”
“You parents keep you that sheltered?” He tilted his head curiously with a laugh before removing his hand from her and standing up proper. “I am Prince Credere of Budleigh Deep, here upon invitation with the only desire of catching a glimpse of the Pearl Princess.”
“Only to have her to yourself away in the library. . .” her words started off playful before the cold truth of them ran ice through her veins. “Which is horribly inappropriate.”
“On the contrary, princess.” He came in close again with that mischievous grin and touched her nose again. “I am merely ensuring your safety from brutish suitors and keeping you company while the festivities are held.”
“Surely you jest!” She held her hands up to push on his lean chest to push him away and found no resistance from him by his actions.
“Surely not.” His tone was flirtatious as he put a slim distance between them. “I meant what I said princess. Gabbro had higher chances of finding a suitor to chase than I would, and since I already have you here, I won’t be letting you go any time soon.” She hated the excited chirp that escaped her and goaded his ego as his smile grew wider. “Besides, I would much prefer to get to know you in places that won’t hinder our vision so I can properly admire you.”
“Y – You must stop saying such empty words!” She squeezed her eyes shut as the only way to hide herself away from that silver gaze.
“My words are not empty, little Pearl.” His voice practically called to her for her to open his eyes to her again. “The bright lights do not do you justice and cast such a glare that it hinders your beauty from my eyes.”
She would surely pass out from how tightly her gills were clenched at holding her breath to keep from falling into his sweet trap. Such compliments were not meant for her ears nor her deprived heart that ate them up greedily and wanted to hear more. It was obvious to all that Chlora was the pretty princess between the two of them in almost every way, and everyone made a note of telling her and her parents that. Pearl had long since resided herself to lingering in the shadows or constantly in the library away from others, but to have someone speak to her with such praise did things to her heart that she wasn’t prepared for.
“How can you say such things when you hardly know me?” The question escaped from her mouth before she could censor it from her mind. Credere didn’t appear insulted nor upset by her question and only looked on her more fondly.
“Because I have a desire to know you further so that you will believe my words when I finally do know more about you.” His tail slowly unraveled from the long legs of her chair and held his hand out to her alluringly. “If it would please you, little Pearl, I would love nothing more than to court you properly to know you better.”
She almost reached for his hand and hand to press it against her chest to keep from falling into temptation so quickly. She’d been jilted by someone once before and promised herself never to make the same mistake again. “And if it doesn’t?”
“Then I shall mourn my loss until my dying breath and reside myself to a solitary life for not being good enough.” His fingers flexed temptingly at her as he studied her. “If it would sooth your worries, I only wish to know about your favorite books this evening so that we may truly determined if we are suited for each other.”
“And s-should someone come looking for me?” Her heart leapt in fear at the idea of getting caught alone together like this and prayed no one entered to spoil this moment.
“Then I shall boldly state my wishes to court you before you can say otherwise.” He waggled his brow teasingly at her and still held his hand out to her. “Do we have a deal?”Homewood.
