comes one of Marvel Studios’s most ambitious pictures yet: Ant-Man. 

When I heard that Ant-Man was going to part of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I was really hesitant and frankly annoyed. Another male-led superhero movie and what could be so great about ants? Still no sign of a Black Widow movie on the horizon! It just all seemed random. We had already met Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, and Thor, what could Ant-Man possibly bring to the team?  Plus, it was the first post-Age of Ultron movie.

There was a lot of pressure for Ant-Man.

When the first trailers of the films previewed initially, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to see it. Then Marvel Comics released a new Ant-Man series earlier this year, and I was like this actually pretty funny and I really enjoyed reading about Scott Lang and how he seemed a little more down to earth and it was about family. Scott just wants to be able to spend more time with his daughter and prove to his wife and himself that he can actually be an adult. Does it involve a lot of scheming and finding loopholes ....yes, but hey, he’s learning from his mistakes. I just really wish the author of this series had written the film. 

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the film. It was really fun to watch and the actions scenes were really good and cool. The writing just was not up to par. I think Captain America: The Winter Soldier really set the bar for Marvel Studios movies going forward. The story, the acting, the action scenes were just phenomenal.  This year, I think the Marvel films were just okay. 

The writing in Ant-Man was subpar and it took a while to get the story going, There was limited characterization, and with the limited amount we did receive, it featured quite a fair bit of stereotyping that I was not okay with. Because, they were having an issue with getting a script together after Edgar Wright had left, some of the cast got involved and helped finish the script. I think that should have the perfect moment to say,”This is what I want to see a movie and this hasn’t been done before. I don’t think this character would act like this in this sort of situation.We really have a chance to be ground-breaking here guys!” I would really be interested to see what Edgar Wright’s story was going to be.

Darren Cross aka the Yellowjacket and Hope Van Dyne, had potential to be great characters, but they weren’t fleshed out enough. I would have like to see more of Hope growing up. Did she go to college and what did she study? We  know that her mother died when she was seven, but before that, what was it like being raised by two superheroes? What was her mother like? How often were all three of them together? We know she can kick butt, but there’s more to her than that. She’s sassy and smart, she was involved in and carried out corporate espionage. Why did they have to make her a love interest, at least why so soon?!  Women don’t need to serve solely as love interests in tv shows and movies. 

As for Darren Cross, I wish there would have been a single flashback scene of him interacting with Hank Pym. Or Maybe that moment when Hank Pym began pushing him away. Just something, anything. Does he want to be better than Hank or is he just out for pure revenge? I didn’t know how I should react with towards him. Am I supposed to like him,not like him, sympathize with him, look at his shiny head. I wasn’t really sure what they were going for with Darren Cross and Corey Stoll, the actor who portrayed him, didn’t get to show how great an actor he is, nor did Evangelline Lilly.

Lastly, a lot of the funny moments were shown in the promos. That kind of took away from the story too. 

I really did enjoy the movie, there were just some things I found problematic and while I wasn’t expecting too much from the movie, I was expecting more from the juggernaut that is Marvel Studios.  

I hope we do get too see more of Ant-Man and Scott and Hope and Hank. There is so much story left to be told!!! The possibilty that Janet could still be alive...

I think it's really disappointing that a lot of female celebrities denounce feminism just because it doesn't serve their own interests. Like Kaley Cuoco saying she isn't a feminist because she has "never experienced inequality"? Fuck that. Are rich, successful actresses, singers and models going to experience a high level of inequality? Probably not. But it's still there, all over the world, and it makes me sad that women I previously respected and admired just don't seem to care about that. Feminism isn't a one-way street: you need to work to improve the lives and rights of all women, not just yourself until you feel better.
