I think Emma's role in current X-books is her trying to be a leader where the other leaders are failing in the mutant community. Xavier is off-world with bird wife, Rogue's team is just living down in Louisiana, Scott and Magneto's team is just scraping by in a factory.

Mutants have very little community right now, especially for the concept of younger mutants who do not have the luck of being in New Orleans or involved with 3K enough to be of interest to Scott dealing with them. Everyone is too busy to actually deal with the fact that the loss of Krakoa means the loss of a common mutant community. NYX was cancelled before it could serve as that concept.

The Hellfire Vigil was Emma's idea.

Teaching the kids from Exceptional was her idea.

Graymatter Lane is her idea, a safe place for mutants anywhere in the world to find community. I don't think she's power hungry, I think she (and Kate) are the only ones willing right now to reach out to ANY mutant who needs or wants community. And she'll be damned if someone like Scott is going to get in the way of her trying to help mutants when no one else is. Even Magneto is onboard with the school concept, even when Scott tried to raze the mind palace to the ground.

I don't think Scott is power hungry either, but he's more like Xavier right now than he will ever admit.

Mark Brooks's D'fied X-Men Covers Coming in 2025

One of the most baffling thing about X-Men United is how the Exceptional kids have all been given leadership positions in the school (Axo is even handling the school's security) over characters who have been around a lot longer and really shouldn't be students at this point. Wolf Cub goes back to the Academy X days, why are they still a student when classmates like Laura and Prodigy are teachers? Flourish went to the Jean Grey School and Galura was on the New Mutants with her girlfriend, neither should be student at this point and they certainly shouldn't be under characters with barely any experience. Dryad is the only that that feels explainable since she died and was resurrected on Krakoa, but that was still near the start of that era so she still have more years on these so-called mentors. The Exceptional kids should all be students along with Ben and Animalia and the other should be in mentor positions.

This speaks to one of the main problems with the whole school concept. Writers and editors see the various schools as a place for mutants to go, but never to actual graduate from. There's never a set structure with these schools. The kids go through endless danger room session and do some other classes occasionally, but there's progression, there's no set end date for their studies. They just go to school and hang around until they either join an X-Men team or he writers just forget about them or the school is blown up again.

The New Mutants got to unofficially graduate when they became X-Force (although barely any of the originals were even left at that point) and the same with the Generation X kids when that title was cancelled and they were just moved onto various x-teams, but the Academy X, Jean Grey and Charles Xavier school classes have never really had that, some progress, but the bulk just seem to loiter around forever held back until, like now, someone needs fill out the student body of another sure to be doom to explode school.
