Italophone tumblr is going insane can you explain what’s happening??
long story short every year for five consecutive days europe's oldest song contest happens and it's italy's biggest televised event. while it's always been camp (in a very italian way), in the last couple years it's become pretty explicitly queer as well, and of top of that the pandemic started hitting italy right after last year's festival so there's a lot of symbolism going on in this year's one. and, y'know, we're an overdramatic people by nature
How the fuck did you guess my type so accurately. Like none of the questions even seemed to directly tie in to it. Are you magic??
im just gay asf <3 thank you
To be honest while it probably doesn’t apply to the French I’m from Brazil and I did legitimately want to go to an American college (I even took SATs) though I ultimately decided against it. There are a lot of factors that go into it but having an education that allows you to potentially be employable in America, plus the fact that most high-profile academics don’t leave an American circle… for someone whose family is well-off enough it might be worth it. One of my cousins did it.
oh absolutely understand ppl from other countries coming here for education just not from countries like france lol like either u call all americans stupid or you want it’s colleges pick one. bitch.

Today I was struck with the thought that ash would be terrifyingly overprotective of michael he’d be so annoying i lov him
he absolutely would be!! he literally criticized max and jessica’s parenting TO THEIR FACES when michael wasn’t even in the room. ash wants nothing but the best for children and he would protect and defend that boy with his life
I gotta say as someone who genuinely enjoyed Hetalia when I was much younger and found myself returning to it in quarantine but avoiding the fandom like the plague both to avoid discourse and because I acknowledge it is a deeply, deeply problematic work in more ways than one and has a complicated relationship with both Western European and Japanese far-right nationalism I do think perusing through your blog is the first time I’ve seen.. an actual Hetalia blog discussing the problematic aspects of it with actual empathy for both the people it negatively affects and portrays? Anyway this rant is probably nonsensical sorry shdjsjsjnfdnnd
ahh no I’m glad you think so, I certainly hope to come across that way. It is something I think about a lot, as someone who’s been here p consistently for a decade now lol, and I am far from an expert when it comes to anything to do w asia, but I do try. like in some ways the problematic aspects of hetalia are very obvious (the og webcomic) and in some ways it’s more. well, smth based on personified countries is just going to attract bad people to it, even if the bad people take issue with the goofiness etc of it (I’ve seen one post on here say that it’s fash bc it tries to “uwuify” n@zi germany, and it’s just. cannot emphasize enough tbh how little actual, intentional fash want to do that, actual fash are v much interested in the exact opposite of that).
It also personally bothers me when people say it’s irredeemably antisemitic, bc tbqh both wrt canon and fandom antisemitism has never once been even in the top ten issues with it imo (not to say there are 0 issues on that front ofc especially in the fandom but), and idk the centering of made up antisemitism just obfuscates the real issues….
anyway yeah I’ve recently seen a lot of good posts about the complicated nature of it, I’m wary of saying that the fandom is “better now” (as this post lays out) but I think fandom culture in general puts more effort into being thoughtful about these things than it used to be, and that’s rubbed off some on hetalia too because it is something that does require extra sensitivity, even if the stuff in the og webcomic didn’t exist, bc at the end of the day anything that gets involved on more than a surface level w history and geopolitics requires sensitivity

People with no material experience with traumatized people in real life or any semblance of a psychology degree: “hmmmmm..: actually I think ash was destined to suffer for eternity and there is nO wAy he could ever live a life not plagued by constant suffering”
LMAO RIGHT!!!! like i generally do not like to assume people dont have their own struggles but even if they have trauma,,, or actually ESPECIALLY if they have trauma, it is so tone-deaf and shitty to say “actually this character who is traumatized? they are completely defined by their trauma and they can’t heal.”
like, yall realize that trauma/abuse survivors exist in real life, right, and we can see how you talk about us??? and also we can and very often do go on to heal and live happy fulfilling lives???? this isnt some wild hypothetical, what????
