I think one of the most revealing questions you can ask a writer is:

"What part of your story came first?"

Not the title.

Not the genre.

Not even the plot.

The very first thing.

Was it a character?

A scene?

A line of dialogue?

A setting?

A random "what if" question?

It's always fascinating to me because two people can end up writing completely different books from ideas that started in almost the same way.

Hi! I'm Rebecca, a 27-year-old fantasy writer from Scotland living the absolute dream because my debut novel came out on 27th June!!

Published by Ringwood Publishing, Song of the Stag is a love letter to Scotland's historic and folkloric past. From ancient kings and black-hearted patriots to bonnie princes and Jacobite songs, this book celebrates a complex, beautiful, and all too often tragic, land.

It also acts as an allegory for Scottish Independence, a subject I've been passionate about since 2014. The story is about the power of autonomy, be that of a person or a nation. Our main character, Cait, is a sheltered girl with an idyllic, conservative, rural upbringing, and her journey to personal freedom mirrors that of her nation.

Why I write fantasy relationships like emotional warfare

One thing I’ve noticed while writing this series is that my characters rarely struggle most with enemies.

The longer I write this story, the more I realize the real danger in it isn’t magic or political power.

It’s the fear of needing other people. Especially when connection feels more dangerous than loneliness.

A Firework Proposal - Vampire x Reader

You yelped as your partner shot out of the window and flung himself onto the roof of your building.

He landed with annoying grace, leaned over the edge of the roof. “Come up!” Your Vampire Boyfriend whispered.

You rubbed your fingers on your sweaty palms. “How am I supposed to do what you do? I haven’t got the grip, nor the power, to do what you do!” You snapped back.

It also doesn’t help that all the building’s exterior was a smooth brick that you had no hope of climbing. But you kept that part to yourself.

Your Vampire had said that he had a surprise for you, and the last thing you wanted was to be nasty to him. Especially when he was trying to do something nice for you.

Your Vampire looked over his shoulder, up at the sky. “Then give me your hand.” He held his arm over the edge of the roof, fingers splayed.

Locking your hand over his wrist, you allowed him to pull you up and onto the roof. When you were stable on the rooftop, he tugged you closer, resting a hand on your waist.

He gave you a smug grin as you rolled your eyes. “If you wanted me to be close to you, you should have just asked.” You smiled.

“Yeah, but it’s not as romantic if I just ask, is it? I have to have an excuse for it.” And as if he summoned it, a shot flew into the sky, leaving a stream of orange glittering behind it. “And what perfect excuse than to watch the fireworks with you?”

The shot exploded into the shape of a star, before evaporating in a shower of green sparks and vanishing into the dark night sky.

Saturday Snippet - "Fear"

This is a section from one of my favourite scenes in the first 25% of Darkling.

I’m really happy about where ‘Fear’ fell in this piece. If I’d shared anything else before or after this section, there’d have been spoilers abound!

"I just want you to leave," he insisted, expression shifting from pleading to resigned, and in two long strides he was beside her, on hand lightly touching her elbow as she flinched, stopping her from retreating further. "But it’s too late," he added softly. "They’re here." His gaze was fixed past her, and Lizzy spun around quickly, ridges of sand rising up around her feet as she twisted, almost sending her stumbling but the foreign fingers still resting against her elbow tightened, and kept her steady. It took her a moment to spot them. Long enough that fear began whispering that maybe he'd lied. That maybe she was about to feel teeth against her skin, but then a near-skeletal form staggered out from between two of the small, brightly painted, wooden huts and Lizzy felt herself freeze. "Squirrel shit," she hissed, panic clawing at her throat.
