For the elf, this is almost incomprehensible.

Someone with the power to kill choosing not to, simply because another person asked, feels stranger to him than the violence itself.

I’ve realized my characters weren’t exactly "invented." They were survival mechanisms I externalized before I had the words for them. It’s likely why the title Isle of Eight Feathers has survived since middle school, outlasting every rewrite and worldbuilding change I’ve made since. Time buries emotional fossils

I recently opened one of the oldest versions of my fantasy series.

I went back and re-read one of the oldest versions of my fantasy series recently.

Not notes. Not fragments. An actual draft written years ago by a much younger version of me.

And the strange thing wasn’t the bad prose or the awkward dialogue. I expected that.

What surprised me was realizing the emotional core of the story had already been there the whole time — long before I understood it consciously.

At the time, I thought I was writing

world-building

hierarchy

languages

political fantasy.

When actually I was mostly writing about

fear of being diminished

the need to be understood

the terror of losing your place in other people’s eyes.

Looking at it now, it’s painfully obvious those were the things I was struggling with at the time without fully realizing it.

So fiction became the place where all of that leaked out safely before I had proper language for it.

I think old stories preserve emotional truths before we have proper language for them.

Like fossils from earlier versions of ourselves.

The connection felt real – That’s why the disappointment hurt

One of the most important things about Eerika is that she is not naïve.

She survives by refusing to break.

A girl from another world. A soldier who was never supposed to exist. A woman who keeps saving people long after it starts destroying her.

Eerika never wanted to become a mage, a leader, or the center of a war between kingdoms.

Some people survive because they are chosen. Eerika survives despite it.

Why I write fantasy relationships like emotional warfare

One thing I’ve noticed while writing this series is that my characters rarely struggle most with enemies.

The longer I write this story, the more I realize the real danger in it isn’t magic or political power.

It’s the fear of needing other people. Especially when connection feels more dangerous than loneliness.

Why my fantasy story is actually about control, not magic

When people hear I’m writing fantasy, they usually assume the center of the story is magic, elves, great heroes and epic battles. Nah...

I used to think I was writing a fantasy story about magic, kingdoms, and prophecy.

The longer I work on it, the more I realize it’s actually about control: the ways people try to hold themselves together after trauma, fear, loss, and power reshape them. Wrote more about that in my Substack.

One of the best ways to create tension in fiction is forcing people with incompatible goals into prolonged proximity.

Not battle. Not action. Just:

exhausted people

dangerous people

frightened people

proud people

all trapped together long enough for cracks to start showing. A caravan. A ship. A winter camp. A diplomatic mission. A prison. The tension comes from the understanding that violence could happen at any moment – and everyone knows it.

Often the most important moments are tiny:

someone touching a weapon

a conversation going too quiet

one person watching instead of speaking

exhaustion shortening tempers

a leader trying to keep peace between groups that already distrust each other

And the important thing is: tension should not fully disappear after conflict. People may comply without forgiving. They may calm down without trusting. They may cooperate while still preparing for betrayal. That lingering instability is what makes group dynamics feel alive.

In many cases, this creates more suspense than constant fight scenes ever could.

A lot of fiction mistakes danger for charisma

The result is often the same man: emotionally detached, casually violent, endlessly admired by everyone around him.

But genuinely dangerous people do not create comfort in a room. They create tension.

Not always through obvious threats, but through smaller things:

people choosing their words carefully

hesitation before disagreement

conversations tightening when they enter

uncertainty about what might trigger escalation

Real danger changes group dynamics.

One thing I find much more interesting than the “fantasy sociopath” archetype is writing characters who remain genuinely dangerous and deeply human at the same time.

Someone can:

protect their own people

understand power structures

show restraint

be emotionally perceptive

while also:

normalizing violence

ruling through fear

carrying unresolved trauma

remaining capable of cruelty

Understanding is not the same thing as absolution.

And believable change is usually quieter than fiction likes to portray it. Often the first sign of growth is not kindness. It’s restraint.

Not escalating. Not reaching for violence immediately. Allowing vulnerability to exist for one moment longer than before.

That uncertainty – whether someone is changing or simply pausing – is often far more compelling than theatrical cruelty ever will.

There’s something deeply fascinating to me about how outcasts recognize each other almost immediately.

A female wizard’s apprentice who never fit the role society wanted for her sits across a campfire from an outlaw leader who abandoned society altogether. And suddenly they are having a conversation nobody else around them fully understands.

Because the respectable people in society are usually the ones most obsessed with hierarchy and rules and “proper roles.” But once someone has already crossed the line into becoming an outsider? A lot of those rules stop mattering.

The outlaw does not care that she is a woman in authority nearly as much as the “respectable” men do. He cares whether she can survive. Whether she can command people. Whether she can make hard decisions without flinching.

And she realizes she feels safer being herself around criminals than around polite society. Which is honestly a little horrifying. Especially because earlier that same day she literally threw him to the ground to stop him from beating one of her men half to death.

And yet later she still invites him to sit at her fire. Not because she trusts him. Not because she thinks he’s secretly good. But because she understands him. And he understands something about her too.

They are both people who could not survive inside the life society prepared for them. And I think there’s something really emotional about characters who look at each other and realize: “Oh. You were never built for the cage either.”

What kind of people does society call criminals?

One of the recurring themes in my writing is the uneasy line between “criminal” and “respectable person.” Not because I think violence or cr

One of the hardest things to write in fantasy isn’t battle.

It’s exhaustion.

Wet clothes. Cold boots. People getting irritated because they haven’t been warm in days.

That’s where groups either start breaking apart – or become a community.

They kept calling him dangerous. But the truly dangerous moment came later: when someone treated him like a human being, and he no longer knew how to survive as a monster.

The hardest part of changing wasn’t guilt. It was realizing that violence had once felt natural. Like breathing.

Opening the door

For the longest time, this story existed entirely in private.

Just fragments: a conversation, a scene, a character refusing to leave someone behind, another trying to maintain control at any cost.

Over time, those fragments became a world.

An island divided into kingdoms, where the wind tastes of salt and the traditions are as sharp as blades. A society built on hierarchy and emotional restraint. People carrying grief, shame, loyalty, fear, and unbearable responsibility.

The fantasy elements matter to me, but mostly because they allow emotional conflicts to become larger, stranger, and more visible.

What interests me most are the moments underneath the plot:

the silence after violence

the instinct to care for someone you hate

the terror of vulnerability

the need to remain useful in order to deserve love

the fragile line between control and collapse

This project is still unfinished and evolving. Some parts are polished. Others are little more than notes and emotional impressions waiting to become scenes.

I don’t want this space to feel like marketing. I want it to feel like opening a door into a living world.
