I finally finished up my re-read of *Sawkill Girls* yesterday, and I’m hoping to read *Mexican Gothic* and *The Haunting of Hill House* this weekend. 🤓 What are you guys reading, or planning to read, this weekend?? . . . And do you have a favorite fall beverage?? I’ve never been much of a coffee drinker, but I recently discovered sweet cream creamer, and I am hooked. The proof copy of Hazel surprised me in the mail yesterday - I didn’t even know it was ready let alone shipped! I’m checking over it today with a fine toothed comb to make sure everything looks as it should, so I hope we can give them the okay (or a few edits) to proceed to printing soon. Chocolat by Joanne Harris is the first in a trilogy about a woman named Vianne who is a Witch, thought she’d never say that herself in so many words. In order to give her young daughter Anouk a better life, she settles into a small French village and opens a Chololeterie at the beginning of Lent. She loves chocolate and somehow always knows everyone’s favorite sweet treat. While some of the townspeople start to take a liking to her, many others see Vianne, a single woman with a child out of wedlock, as an strange and unwelcome threat. Especially the town’s priest, who believes Vianne is the epitome of sin, as he tries to drive them out of town using whatever means necessary.

This book was so short and sweet (literally!) and had such beautiful and delicious imagery. Vianne is so kind and gentle and strong and patient and it’s hard not to fall in love with her and her daughter. She tries to instill the best values in Anouk while also living her best life and doesn’t give a damn what others think. The way Vianne goes about performing magic is so delicate and based in real magick that I dare any Witch or Wiccan or whatever else you call yourself not to fall in love with magick all over again.
