Melian they could never make me hate you. Nellas they could never make me hate you. Beleg they could never make me hate you. Gwindor they could never make me hate you. Findulias they could never make me hate you. Brandir they could never make me hate you. The Children of Húrin may technically be about Túrin but I am reading it for pookies number one two three four five and six.
A ton of rambling about Faramir and Denethor and etc. under the cut. Be warned this is super long especially compared to what I'd usually post.
Idk if this is a widely held belief or not but I think Finduilas' death contributed a lot to Denethor's dislike of Faramir. Because it's mentioned somewhere that she died when Faramir was about 5 years old and that ever since he was born his mother had always been sick. So maybe Denethor blamed Faramir for Finduilas' death at least a little bit.
That and ofc that Denethor and Faramir have a lot in common at least with how they think and the way they're able to read people and Faramir was always more bookish and peaceful and Boromir was more willing to go fight and go to war and ofc was bigger and stronger just because he was the older brother.
Denethor also always distrusted Gandalf while Faramir was out there trying to learn as much from Gandalf's wisdom as he could so that definitely caused problems between Faramir and Denethor as well.
And I'm pretty sure this is mentioned in the books but I think that Denethor's pathway towards despair was started because of Finduilas' death and that the palantir and the war and his disagreements with Faramir and then Boromir's death just accelerated things.
The movie and book depictions of Denethor and Faramir are so different, I mean they literally take out everything about Denethor having his own palantir and in the books Denethor was a lot more peaceful about his own death in the end. They also almost kind of dumb down Faramir a little?? For lack of a better word. They remove the part where Faramir is able to guess that Boromir had tried to take the ring. And a lot of his back-and-forth with Frodo is simplified in the film.
So in the books it's much easier to get the message about the destructive power of despair but in the movies Denethor just comes across as a shitty dad 😭 not saying he isn't a bad father in the books too but there's much more reason given behind his dislike of Faramir, even if in the end it's still a bit illogical. And don't get me wrong this isn't me blaming Faramir for why his dad hates him, I just sort of understand Denethor's logic a tiny bit more in this case.
In the end I understand why they removed most of the things they did for the movies just for pacing reasons. But also I will never get over Faramir being tempted by the ring in the movies because he isn't in the books and that just makes his character so much cooler. He also has some of my favorite quotes from the books:
“But fear no more! I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs, Frodo son of Drogo.”
And
"I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."
One thing that I do really appreciate about Faramir in the movies is that they ended up giving Beregond's role of guiding Pippin through Minas Tirith to Faramir instead, which not only is a cute and fun friendship between the two but also just cuts down on the amount of more minor side characters which makes watching the films a lot less confusing. They did something similar in the fellowship of the ring movie when they gave Glorfindel's role with saving Frodo to Arwen, fleshing out her character more and also giving us another female character who actually does something important other than just Éowyn.
This post is already so long but while we're on the topic of Éowyn, in one of my other recent posts I mentioned something about how Denethor and Éowyn's arcs are both about despair, except Denethor gives into it while Éowyn keeps on fighting even on the edge of doom... which is even more interesting when you consider that she ends up getting with Faramir later on. Faramir basically marries someone who's the complete opposite of his father which is just... yeah.
If you actually read this far tysm for listening to me yap lol
Summary: Turin and Nienor, much like Tanjiro and Nezuko, hail from a once-powerful lineage that has withered into poverty over generations. Their father mysteriously vanishes, and tragedy strikes when a demon, Melkor/Galrung, slaughters their sister, Lailath, and Mother, Morwen and turns Nienor into a demon while Turin is away. Returning home from selling wood, Turin is met with a gruesome scene, his family gone, and his sister transformed into a demon.
I've recently fallen down a rabbit hole of the kny (demonslayer fandom) and despite how niche it is, I decided to combine my two favorite things; Kny and the Silmarillion.
Turin and Nienor would be the main charachters of the series, since they fit mostly with the charachters Tanjiro and Nezuko being the best brother-sister duo in the series. There designs and outfits would be similar too, except in this case, Turin's blade is fully black. After Hurin dissapeared into the woods, Morwen could no longer provide to her family and they fell into poverty. Turin is sent down into town to sell coal every day, but when he gets back one night, he finds his mother and Lalaith slaughtered by demons, and his sister turned into one. He carries her down the mountain, but is attacked by Nienor, but is able to get her under control and lucid.
However in this au, Giyuu is replaced with Beleg, and like in the original canon, finds the newly turned Nienor and Turin. He uses a bow and arrow made of nichirin to halt a demons attack, and then uses a sword to finish the demon off. Otherwise does not have have a breathing style which stops him from becoming a Hashira. He is rank Kinoe. Beleg notices Nienor and Turin's unique situation and personally helps them, escorting them them to the Demonslayer corps base where they meet the Hashiras and the leader of the corps.
The Hashira
Maedhros: Flame Pillar-oldest son of Feanor and known to be the most powerful of the hashira. His tsugkuo are Elrond and Elros who use mist breathing.
Maglor: Sound Pillar- He shares tsugkuo with Maedhros, his older brother. He sees them as his sons and is extremely protective of them.
Celegorm: Beast Pillar-He hunts demons with his loyal wolf-dog, Huan. He is known to be very brutal when he kills demons.
Curufin: Stone Pillar-Not only is he a hashira, he also is a part-sword smith and creates nichirin swords/weapons for the rest of the hashira.
Caranthir: Wind Pillar-His style is extremely aggressive, channelling his anger for demons into a form that causes demons immense pain.
Aredhel: Flower Pillar-One of the most powerful, she has really good eyes which allows her to use vermillion eye, a type of form in the flower breathing style. Her adopted son Maeglin runs the butterfly mansion while she is away.
Galadriel: Thunder Pillar-She is the most mysterious hashira and hides her full strength to surprise demons. It is said uppermoon 1 is wary of her.
Finrod: Serpent Pillar-created his own breathing style and uses a curvy sword that resembles a snake. He later saves Turin and Noenor from Uppermoon 1 in exchange for his life.
Fingon: Ice Pillar- He a created a breathing style based off of his father, who recently died to a fight with Melkor. he is the closest with Maedhros, and he is known for being reckless.
When Turin and Nienor arrive at the corps, many call for the execution of Nienor because she is a demon. However the leader of the corps stops this from happening. The corps have always been run by the Finweans, who have always strongly opposed Melkor, who placed a curse on there family for centuries. Feanor, the last true leader of the Finweans was targeted by the Demon-king, Melkor himself and turned into a demon, where he was slain by his sons, who many are the Hashiras. His widowed wife was supposed to be in charge but leader was usurped by Fingolfin who is the half-brother of feanor. Despite being a benevolent leader, some of the Hashira, (the sons of feanor) do not believe them as true leaders which causes much tension between the corps.
Amrod and Amras are the only Feanorians that have not become Hashira, but are still a high ranking Kinoe. The reason is so that they will hide there existence from Melkor so they are not targeted, so that if their brothers die, there will be someone to still continue the family line.
Fingolfin stops the Hashira from executing Nienor, foreseeing that she would cause a great change in the war against Melkor. Turin is then sent to train with Beleg under the Hashira. Beleg and Turin quickly become close friends, being similar in age and bonding over there traumatic experiences.
To officially become a Demon-slayer, they have to go through final selection, without his demonic sister protecting him. Turin meets a girl named Findulias, a love breather who uses a nichirin spear to slay demons. They pass the final selection together, and with Beleg they begin to go on missions to slay demons together, where Nienor, who hides in Turins wooden box most of the time, helps fight demons.
Melkor hears of Turin and his sister, who is one of the only demons to ever break his curse and not eat humans. The siblings begin to pose a real threat to the demon king. Enraged he begins to send his most powerful demons after him, including the Twelve Kizuki (upper and lower moons) after them.
The Uppermoons
Sauron- Uppermoon 1-The strongest demon, only second to melkor and his most trusted. He used to be named mairon and was a demonslayer. however he willingly betrayed the corps to becmoe a demon. No one has come close to killing him-except for a female slayer named luthien, but some believe its just a legend.
Gothmog-Uppermoon 2- He is a giant and burly demon, with no distinct human features unlike Sauron. He is mysterious and nobody knows who he was as a demon-but again he has never let his victims live.
Galrung-Uppermoon 3-He is the one that is sent after Turin later in the story, and becomes his greatest foe after it uses its blood demon art (powers) to trick Turin into killing his closest companion Beleg. ever since then Turin has sworn to hunt and kill Galrung for good.
Thurigwethil-Uppermoon 4- The only female in the uppermoons and only eats men and spares women. Despite being a lower rank then Sauron, she is the only demon that was spared by luthien from any hurt, the most powerful demonslayer in history.
Gostir-Uppermoon Five- Another dragon-like uppermoon who was twisted into becoming a demon. The prodigies Elrond and Elros are the ones to kill this upper moon by themselves, proving they have a lot of potential. Sauron especially takes interest in them and realizes that they are from his blood-line of maia.
Draugluin-Uppermoon 6-The newest of the uppermoons and only recently was a lowermoon. However it has eaten quite a few hashira over the centuries and still poses a real threat.
Lowermoons
Telvido- Lower moon 1-Is known to take the form of a cat, and has razor sharp claws that can turn a slayer into ribbons. Despite its feline appearance it can talk like a human would, and call itself "the prince of cats"
Berúthiel-Lowermoon 2- She is a beautiful woman, but dont let that fool you-she could easily kill you. Her blood demon art is unknown, which makes her all the more dangerous.
Shelob-Lowermoon 3- A spider like lady descended from an uppermoon that was killed by hashira centuries ago. She is much less powerful then her predecessor, however she is still a lowermoon, and has gleefully gobbled up many innocents.
the rest of the lowermoons are unknown.-
This is very much a self-indulgent au since I know there is not a lot of overlap between these two fandoms. To the people who are interested in this-thank you please feel free to reblog.
Gil-Galad “Fingon’s son” and how everyone had reason to lie
I’m working under the assumption that Gil-Galad is a descendant of Finwe, and that he was born at some point after the Dagor Bragollach, possibly even after the Nirnaeth Anoediad. I’m also assuming the Noldor don’t believe in ruling queens, which is all but stated in the text.
I don’t know whose kid he is, but I know why he went down in history as Fingon’s. Let’s look at potential parents (all living members of the house of Finwe). [under a cut for length]
The Feanorians are disinherited, and any children of theirs would also be so. Maedhros never meant to completely give up his claim, just step back one place (yielding the kingship to “the eldest here of the house of Finwe”), and his brothers didn’t even agree with that. It’s a plausible tale that Fingon entrusted his son into the care of his best friend Maedhros before the battle. Turgon arrived so late, and had been in Gondolin for years, he can’t honestly say he knows more about his brother’s life than Maedhros does these days. There’s a child here who is obviously of Finwe’s line. Silver hair is rarely seen on Noldor outside the line of Miriel, but perhaps his mother was a Sinda.
Celebrimbor has no one to turn to. Everyone in Nargothrond hates him for the actions of his father and uncle. He doesn’t exactly expect a warm welcome if he goes back to his father and says “I still hate you for killing Finrod, but your grandson needs shelter.” Doriath and Gondolin are closed to outsiders. That leaves the Falas, but even there a Feanorian will be viewed with suspicion. He does what he sees as the kindest thing possible for Gil-Galad. Celebrimbor will have to work the rest of his life to overcome his family; Fingon’s son, entrusted to his cousin’s care for the hazardous journey south, will be loved and trusted by all.
The death of Turgon’s wife Elenwe was well known. There has only been one remarriage in elven history, which was with the consent of the deceased and still led to trouble. Turgon’s bastard son leaves Gondolin at the same time the army marches off, but in the opposite direction. Many civilians of Hithlum are fleeing south as well, one more child with his mother will hardly be noticed. When the news of the battle reaches Balar, she takes the opportunity to claim her child’s rightful inheritance. If Turgon won’t acknowledge his child, his brother will have to stand in.
All of Gondolin knows the princess Idril is wed and has a child, you can’t keep a royal pregnancy secret in a closed kingdom. But if her husband (who finds the whole thing a bit amusing and a bit hot), and her father the king, approve of her courtship of Tuor, no one else has grounds to speak against it. Tuor is mortal and will die in a few years anyway, and the scandal will be but a brief incident in the life of their princess. Then Earendil is born, and the city falls, and Idril’s husband falls with it. The people of Gondolin have little left other than pride in their heritage and in their princess. Nothing is allowed to taint her reputation in front of the Sindar, so Gil-Galad becomes Fingon’s son. With Turgon sadly dead, it doesn’t even disrupt the succession.
Maeglin betrayed Gondolin to Sauron. The Gondolindrim won’t execute a child for his father’s crimes, regardless of any grumblings about tainted blood. With Turgon dead, the throne would normally pass to Earendil - if he were actually an elf. Erenion - called this because Maeglin, like Eol, refused to name him until he was twelve years old - is next in line. He would make a good king, or at least could be taught to be one by the time he grows up, if it weren’t for his origins. So Erenion is Fingon’s son. (If Erenion became just a random child instead, the crown would go to Orodreth, and the Gondolindrim aren’t going to be ruled by an outsider.)
Lalwen got left out the history books herself, as a woman who never ruled a realm. Gil-Galad inherited the crown, so he must be the son of the High King. A lack of information about his early life reflects the chaos that followed the Bragaollach and the Nirnaeth, not any oversight on the part of the historian.
Orodreth wants his son to be king. After the fall of Tol Sirion and then Orodreth doing absolutely nothing as Celegorm and Curufin turned Nargothrond against Finrod, the rest of the Noldor don’t really respect him. In addition, Gil-Galad would rightly be behind any children Idril or Maeglin have, if they ever emerge from Gondolin. Fingon might have sent his son to Finrod in his safe hidden city, and it’s a good thing the information was not widely shared - imagine what Celegorm and Curufin would have done had they known! Orodreth sends Gil-Galad to Balar not because he truly worries the city might fall, but to be prominently known as the Heir to the Throne somewhere people can’t compare their appearances.
The parents of a child being separated during a pregnancy is harmful for both the parents and the child. Findulias had tried to convince Gwindor to stay, and not go along with this foolish plan to challenge Morgoth. When he insisted on fighting, she comforted herself with the belief that he would return soon, after all, he was going to defend the capital city, that can’t be too dangerous right? He didn’t return though, and Findulias was left to raise their child alone. She got enough pitying looks over Gwindor’s death/capture (no one knew which) as it was, she couldn’t have borne the way people would look at her if they knew she was a widow. So she wasn’t, and therefore Gil-Galad could not be her son. The child of one of her cousins though, she would be his closest kin in Nargothrond, and it would be quite logical for her to raise him. Fingon was unmarried, and lived long enough he could have an infant son.
Galadriel crossed the sea to rule a kingdom of her own. She learned how to defend a kingdom from Melian, and scouted land east of Taur-im-Duinath to found one. She would be Queen, with Celeborn king beside her - not her beside him - and their son the crown prince. Erenion, scion of kings, has a claim to the thrones of Tirion, Aqualonde, Doriath, and perhaps even Valmar. Galadriel planned to keep her kingdom quiet until her reign was firmly established, but had notified her brothers and received assurances of their support, both politically and sending prospective citizens. Then the Dagor Bragollach happens, and Aegnor and Angrod dies, and she won’t found a new kingdom when the current ones are barely standing. Finrod dies, and then the Nirnaeth, and Galadriel realizes that her kingdom will not be founded this Age. But she is proud, and Erenion was born to rule. If her cousins’ foolishness means he will not rule Galadriel’s kingdom, he will rule the Noldor, for as long as they have left. Galadriel, Celeborn, and Erenion travel to Balar, where she introduces Erenion as Fingon’s son, heir to the throne of the Noldor, in her mind the least of what he deserves.
EDIT: I forgot Finrod. Finrod left on a quest that was nearly certain to lead to his death. Celegorm and Curufin have basically taken over Nargothrond. If Orodreth, a grown elf, can’t stand against them, what chance does a young child have? Orodreth feels a duty to stay and do what he can for the city, but he sends Gil-Galad away, as who knows the sons of Feanor are wiling to do to consolidate power. A ‘young kinsman of the High King’ arrives at the Falas, truth that distances the boy from any attempts at revenge.
By the time, Túrin regained his senses, the Haladin buried her in a mound they called Haudh-en-Elleth ("Mound of the Elf-maiden").
Findulias’ death🤧 I'm sorry if this is too dramatic, but I couldn't help but try to draw the action. Their grief may seem too feigned, but it seems to me that elves are very painful for any death of their relatives, especially if it is a young elf’s and the daughter’s of their king, because according to their concept, young elves should not die, especially not warriors but women and children.
