You don't know how much I hate how this fandom mischaracterizes them all.
I especially hate Purecacao.

revisiting the eric and tommy arc in bmw is so painful because it just reminds me how much potential eric had as a character that the writers just threw away for no apparent reason.
the thing is, if you look at the earlier seasons he always had the perfect seeds planted and his arc began so strong at the end of his schooling. everytime eric doubts himself during this time he proves over and over again that he is enough. he thinks hes never going to get an A but he wants to work at it, he realises he needs to focus on school to GET his dreams during the whole weatherman thing, even retakes the SATs and actually gets into college. mr feeny even tells him “i have confidence in you, why can’t you have confidence in yourself.” eric might not be the “brightest” but he was ENOUGH.
and then, there’s his heart. the most consistent trait he ever had was how deeply and seriously he cared about everyone around him. cory, jack, his parents, his girlfriends. he even wanted to be a dad to ryan but ultimately realised he wasn’t ready yet. so when tommy comes along, he finally gets to feel like enough because he can make one little kid’s life. and giving tommy up was an incredibly devastating yet mature and necessary step eric takes. it was the perfect intersection of every character trait they had established about him. this was eric proving he didn’t need to have book smarts to be on the right path.
so post season 6, when they literally lobotomise him it’s the hardest blow ever. suddenly, he’s treated like an idiot who adds nothing to the narrative but far over the top idiotic comic relief. suddenly, everyone around him can’t stand it and jack (who loved him “no matter what crazy things he said or did”) is consistently bullying him. the writers take a character who has spent SEASONS learning over and over that he is more than “just an average guy who can skate by on his looks” and will never be smart, is relegated to EXACTLY that. it’s like some sort of sick self-fulfilling prophecy and it’s so cold.
all eric matthews ever wanted in life was a purpose and they couldn’t even give him that.
Joy in the little things
I just recently read a reddit comment that says they hated these specific panels because it flanderizes Saitama into happy-go-lucky protagonist like some other shounen characters and they didn't invest into a character like that and Saitama is supposed to be indifferent, depressive, irritable and standoffish.
I've made bunch of meta in the past about Saitama's mental health and how he's getting better and Saitama's growth as a character, so I'd really like to adress this lack of forethought in the comments which I read.
Maybe I shouldn't read reddit but eh, I also like writing meta so overall it's a win for me.
no series has faced flanderization the likes of the Scooby Doo franchise
We need a name for the bad guy version of "Ron the Death Eater"; i.e., a flawed hero or non-villainous jerk that gets demonized into "the monster of all monsters !" by the fandom.
But instead of heroes, it's villains receiving said treatment from fans.
How about: "Jimmy the Devil"? (Suggestions are more than welcome!)
Named after Jimmy from Mouthwashing, who — while the most morally deplorable member of the Tulpar Crew, and a misogynist — gets flanderized as the most evil character alive in Mouthwashing (no, that would be the Pony Express people) despite his character not being a one-dimensional, evil caricature that loves human suffering.
In this fandom's eyes, some of Jimmy's character flaws can't simply be just your average, everyday flaws (not saying they're harmless, by the way). They must be... advanced character flaws. So, he ends up collecting every bigoted belief under the sun.
I don't think this artist was alluding to the "Jimmy has internalized homophobia" headcanon with their fanart.
Does the guy get to have any redeemable qualities? Nope. He's the "Voldemort of Mouthwashing"; eeeeevil incarnate! Well, people certainly treated him like it by refusing to use his name.
All in all, you can see why I went with Jimmy as the trope namer.
But if you disagree, tell me which character you'd pick over him!
Wow I hope the phenomenon Flanderization doesn’t happen to my favourite character Ned Flanders
I love it when complex, complicated stories in any medium are reduced and condensed to borderline incomprehensible shitposts and memes.
This happened with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, and it was hilarious.
