FULLA

Fulla is one of Frigg’s most trusted handmaidens, known for her unwavering loyalty towards her mistress. She is described as a beautiful maiden with long, flowing hair, adorned with a golden headband that signifies her special status. Unlike many other goddesses, Fulla remains unmarried and a virgin, devoting herself entirely to Frigg’s service. She carries a sacred box, the contents of which remains a mystery, and tends to Frigg’s footwear with great care.

Beyond her duties, Fulla plays a role in divine intrigues, assisting Frigg in her schemes. In one of the stories, she warned King Geirröd of an impending visit from a magician—who was actually Odin in disguise. She also appears to have a strong bond with Nanna, as Baldr’s wife sent her a ring when they resided in Helheim.

Not so long ago, I was telling you I could not find anymore the thesis I had read a few months ago about the Norse goddesses, and that contested Riccardo Ginevra's paper about Sigyn's name, but I did not remember its title... Well I found it on Academia.edu, and EVEN BETTER, I found the academic who wrote it, the amazing and very knowledgeable Ellis B Wylie , aka @loptrcoptr.

Her Master thesis is truly interesting, and give us more information on the Norse goddesses, allowing us to get to know them a little better :3

Another question! Have you heard about the theory of Freya being Fulla rather than Frigg, and Freyr being Phol rather than Baldr, and what do you think it entails

Oh yes, I totally have, and somehow, I personally think it makes sense. At least the Phol freyr aspect of it. I'm uncertain about the Fulla one, but it is not impossible since Freyja can take on different forms.. like the gullveig is freyja theory! ^v^

I think this theory, in particular, highlights just how overlapping the Norse deities can be at times. It's like the Frigg and Freyja situation all over again but different, obviously. If Freyja and Fulla are the same (or once were), it might mean that what we consider different "goddesses" today were actually local names or aspects of a singular fertility household goddess, split apart in later retellings. It also reminds me of the creation myth and who was there too!

This would be possible considering "The Merseburg Charms" is an old high german incantation written down in the 10th century CE (c. 900s) in a manuscript found in Merseburg, Germany. The language suggests they stem from much older oral traditions, possibly going back to pre-Christian Germanic paganism in central Europe. It is amongst the only surviving written records of continental Germanic pagan belief and mention deities like Wodan (Odin), Frija (Frigg), and Balder (or maybe Freyr, depending on your theory).

Vulla/Fulla/Volla.

Sister of the high goddess Frigga and the closest member of her court of Disir. In Friggas sacred hall of Fensalarna.

Her name may mean "of great abundance" or "overflowing abundance" or "complete"

Her name can point to her being associated with wealth and fertility.

The maiden Fulla can be seen as a Goddess of secrets and tressures. Seense Its she who guards Friggas belongings and her secrets, most of so the tressure cheast of secrets. Like her husband, Frigga knows all things, maybe some even that not even her husband know of, but Volla knows, and speak nothing of them.

This makes her a goddess of great power but a rather calme and orderly one, who act with thougt.

To her you can turn, to remain secrets hidden and things of great worth be safe.

When Odin and Frigga made a bet if a king was good or not, Frigga sent Fulla out to warn the King that a dangerus wizard was to come, wich lead to Odin being captures beetween two great fires.

When Nanna and Baldur died and went to Hel they also made sure to seend gift to Frigga and Fulla.

These myths point to that she was a goddess of importance and likely played a part in lost myths before the writings of Snorri.

But in the art and in tressures and secrest, her name still is alive and well and her place amung the Disir still stands fast and clear.

Frigg and her Handmaidens

I decided to redraw my designs for Frigg and her handmaidens again since I haven’t drawn all of them in a minute!

I gave most of them, including Frigg slight redesigns, but I thought drawing them all again would be a fun little thing to do because I feel like these goddesses aren’t talked about enough
