Norse Goddess/Mythological Moodboard:
Bil “instant” is the Norse Goddess/Ásynjur/Dís who is the Waning moon (personified). She is associated closely with the phases of the moon, protector of women, children and nightlife under her prominent phase. Bil is the sister to Hjúki “bringer of health” the Waxing Moon. Originally a mortal children of Midguard, Máni, the God of the Moon had noticed Bil and her brother fetching a pale of water from the well Byrgir. Máni unbeknownst snatches them from the earth and takes them to the realm of the Gods, where they live as equals after eating Idunn’s golden apples.
Within Gylfaginning of Prose Edda, Bil is identified as a “womanly goddess”. Who rides a chariot across the night skies w/ and w/o her brother and adoptive father. Endlessly being chased by the Rokkr wolf aspect, Hati, “one who hates” who is destined to devour her in Ragnarök, the twilight of the Gods and cosmos.
Today, many historians and anthropologists claim that the depiction of Bil and Hjúki from early Scandinavia and Germanic peoples is the inspiration for the popular nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill”, fetching a pale of water.
