ENZONI ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Enzoni was first mixed in New York's Milk & Honey in 2003 by Neopolitan bartender Vincenzo Errico. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Errico's most formative years behind the stick were influneced by the legendary Dick Bradsell, who Errico worked with after he moved to London from Naples in 1999. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Though there is no account of the name of the bar or bars that they worked together in, we do know that this time coincided with Bradsell's prolific consultative, almost nomadic-like years. As such they could have worked togeher at any one of The Player, Opium or Alfred's. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Errico's talents were soon recognised by Milk & Honey's revered founder Sasha Petraske when he was in London at this time, opening the London branch with Jonathan Downey. Rather than recruit Errico for the new London bar, Patraske offered him a position back in New York at the bar that started the cocktail revolution. Like any sane well travelled young bartender, Errico of course accepted! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Errico clearly flourished at Milk & Honey, making his mark by creating this wonderful drink as well as the Red Hook, also in 2003. It is is certainly fair to say that he has the continued gratitude of amari drinkers in the US after his creations contributed to its proliferation in mixed drinks and on menus across the county. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Enzoni: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🍇6 red grapes muddled 🍇30 ml Gin 🍇30 ml Campari 🍇22.5 ml fresh lemon juice 🍇12.5 ml simple syrup ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Shake all ingredients and serve over ice. My only issue with a dram is that there isn't a second one! I do like to be able to really test a gin in plenty of ways, well at least that is my excuse for a gin a day, its research! That said being able to get a feel and taste for a new gin without splashing out is no bad thing. I reckon this gin is worth splashing out on though. @sadlers_ales Peaky Blinder spiced dry gin is a much more delicately spiced gin than I was expecting and no less delicious for it. Mr Gintabica and I thought it had a more liquor like flavour, like moonshine, but this was not a bad thing, it gave it a really spicy, dryness that was complemented by the addition of a dry slice of grapefruit. I opted for @fevertreemixers tonic but I had read somewhere that fever tree aromatic tonic is a good pairing so now I want to try that too! I think this will be a great winter gin, warming and medicinal, not like the exotic summer-y flavour of Opihr, something more British, more subtle. That said maybe it would be a more appropriate choice for what is turning out to be a long cold spring! I am a lucky girl, my loving parents ever worries about my health and well being decided against the yearly onslaught of chocolate by asking the Easter bunny if she minded popping by @masterofmalt and picking up a wee dram or two? So health giving and antioxidant gin it is woohoo! 4 newbies to me and 1 i have tried but am looking forward to giving it another go. This will also be my first try of @boutiqueygin gin. I have longed after trying the spit-roasted pineapple and the moonshot gin but just as excited to be trying miyagawa citrus gin and rhubarb triangle gin. There is also @sadlers_ales peaky blinder spiced dry gin that i am looking forward to, i have really grown to love spiced gin. Ther is also the fantastically named Feckin Irish Gin. I think ill drink that while watching one of my all time favourite tv shows Father Ted. Finally @ginsharish Blue Magic which i tried last time with strawberries so i will be looking for other garnishes for that one. All in all i am happy to say that the end of the Easter holidays is starting to look a bit brighter despite the weather! Returning from the half term in Cornwall and to the chaos of business and everyday life I have paused to momentarily return to a cornish spring morning. Thankfully that comes in a bottle in @curiospiritscompany rock samphire gin! Paired with a sprig (is that what you call it?) Of salicornia to reference the rock samphire and a single star anise to bring out one of the botanicals used in making the gin and @fevertree_uk indian tonic This gave the gin a totally different profile, warming, fresh and spicy and totally delicious! Must explore star anise more. Thank you Cornwall for some wonderful gins i will be back in a few months and Im coming for @elemental_gin, @stivesliquorco gin and @tarquinsgin. I am out!!! Sitting in the Vault Bar in Penzance realising it's been a year since my last outing so i am making the most of it. Continuing my exploration of Cornish gins. Here is a delight in the form of @stivesliquorco St Ives gin. Every town should have a gin especially if they taste as nice as this. Cornwall's first cold compound style gin is as fresh and crisp as a the beautiful blue sea that laps Porthmeor beach. Served here with a single basil leaf and a happy slice of blood orange. I know they are not in season yet but i couldn't resist these strawberries. I have been dying to try @bloomgin with strawberries another winning fruit in my book. Despite the freezing temps outside and a raging fire in the grate, this drink landed me right in the middle of may when the first of the season local strawbs are in and the evenings are lengthening and my thoughts turn to camping. Cheddar is just up the road and its not just famous for cheese, strawberries from Cheddar are the best. Bloom gin is so light and delicate that it pairs perfectly with strawberries and a sprig of mint. Sundays are such wonderful days when you work for yourself. They are days of rest, safe in the knowledge that the children will go back to school/nursery tomorrow, your day will no longer consist of refereeing disputes, preventing death and providing a near constant stream of food and snacks. The only downside is that the I miss the outer monologue that 3 and 6 yr olds have: "daddy you have hairy knees, you must brush them", mummy "i farted it was in my bottom and its out now" and "I have put my unicorn in a bowl to stop it running away" etc. On these days gin feels like more of a medicine than a treat. So i consult my box of botanicals, pick one and build my drink from there. Today for extra medicinal feel i have started with juniper berries, as they smell like medicine, and then the world of gin is your oyster. I continued my testing of @ableforths Bathtub Gin, this time i kept it simple with just a sliver of lemon peel and @fevertree_uk indian tonic. A real hit of juniper with creamy under tones.
