A Screaming Goblet Cell
You would scream too if you knew your mucussy brains were about to explode out of the top of your head.

Goblet cells are epithelial cells specialized to secrete mucus. They are so named because they look like a tall cup or goblet. Only instead of wine these cells are filled with mucus. They are found in a variety of regions but are most well known for their presence in among the epithelium lining the respiratory tract and the small and large intestines.
In the respiratory tract they secrete mucus onto the surface that will trap inhaled particles so that ciliated cells here can push the trapped junk away from the lungs.
In the digestive tract their mucus secretion forms a protective barrier against enzymes, acid and - in the colon where they are present in large numbers - their secretions form a slick lubricating film that allows the fecal material to easily pass.

Recently, I was diagnosed with Crypt Cell Carcinoma. This is a project to document the journey, to whatever coda there will be. There is beauty in this. As an artist, I feel the need to see this phase as beautiful, no matter the outcome. To the others out there whom are also on this journey, this is here to show you there is hope, sadness, laughter, magnificence, & grace, to the end.

Goblet and Secretory Cells Colored transmission electron micrograph of a section through a goblet cell and secretory cells of the duodenum, part of the small intestine.
Goblet cells (pink & blue) secrete mucus which neutralizes stomach acid.
Mucigen granules (circular objects, at upper center) combine with water to form the mucus.
On either side of the goblet cell are the secretory cells whose secretions help in the digestive process.
The microvilli (green hair- like structures, upper frame) serve to increase the secretory capacity of the secretory cells by increasing their surface area.
