Disablism is not the snooty academic form of ableism. Ableism isn't the stood form of disablism for people who don't grasp the social model. Disablism is the British form of ableism. Ableism is the American form of disablism. Other countries may use one or both. But those are the origin points. It's inevitable that in trying to coin a word, many will come up with the word at the same time. That is why we have ableism, ablism, disablism, disableism, disphobia, disabiliphobia, and handicapism. And that's besides terms meant to apply to specific disability groups, like mentalism or autphobia/autistiphobia. What seems the most snooty to me is when people use one of these terms -- any of them really -- and then looks down their nose at everyone who doesn't. No matter what their justification is. The justification for the term may be valid but it doesn't excuse dismissing the viewpoints of everyone who uses a word you don't approve of, or painting everyone who uses a term with the same ideological brush. Hell, some of us are just grateful to have found any word we can remember and keep using. And whatever you do. Never. Never. Never tell someone "If you use that word it means you think Thought X because it's tied to Ideology Y."
