Our Heart is the ultimate Oasis
Do not be misled by your egos, or you will be led away from the truth and into lies.
If I have correctly cultivated my mind, I can possess everything in the world. For those well versed in the strategies of the heart, lust, desire, likes and dislikes are nothing but external things! Being free from joy and anger, happiness and pain, one can put the myriad things on a par.
The Huáinánzǐ 淮南子(The Masters/Philosophers of Huainan) 2nd-century BCE
Book One; Searching out the Tao
The hearts of lovers have eyes.
They see what other watchers fail to see.
With featherless wings they fly
to the Realm of the Lord of the Worlds.
If you will lay aside the ego’s voice, however loudly it may seem to call, if you will not accept its petty gifts that give you nothing that you really want; if you will listen with an open mind, that has not told you what salvation is; then you will hear the mighty voice of truth, quiet in power, strong in stillness, and completely certain in its messages.
There is nothing closer to you than yourself. If you don’t know your self, how will you know others? You might say, “I know myself,” but you are mistaken. The only thing you know about your self is your physical appearance. The only thing you know about your inside (batin, your unconscious) is that when you are hungry you eat, when you are angry, you fight, and when you are consumed by passion, you make love. In this regard you are equal to any animal. You have to seek the reality within yourself. What are you? Where have you come from and where are you going. What is your role in the world? Why have you been created? Where does your happiness lie?
If you would like to know yourself, you should know that you are created by two things. One is your body and your outer appearance (zahir) which you can see with your eyes. The other is your inner forces (batin). This is the part you cannot see, but you can know with your insight. The reality of your existence is in your inwardness (batin, unconscious). Everything is a servant of your inward heart.
