Now I promised @inseparabiles a post about ace attorney. Here it is… featuring my dinner last night because why not.
So I didn’t know anything about ace attorney going into it, all I really knew is that it involved lawyers which, if anything, made my interest wane. I don’t really care about lawyers, or law, or mystery games at that. But so many people recommended this game to me, literally everyone I came across that had played it.
I basically spent the next six months after purchasing it absolutely falling in love with the characters and the story. Some of the cases are masterfully written and have some of the best mysteries I’ve ever played. I think for me, I’m not a huge mystery fan because 1) so many mysteries don’t care about the characters at all and 2) the plot becomes something I can’t invest myself in. This game fixes both of those problems! I think because simply solving the mystery isn’t enough — you need to prove who did it, where and when, and why, and use the evidence you’re given to solve it — makes it so much more engaging. It is a lot of reading, and the gameplay is minimal, but it makes up for it in witty writing, absurdist elements and emotional range. 100% worth the play, and if you like it there’s a ton of games to buy and the company has come out and said that they plan on making more. Just be warned that it’s super addictive… I’m just about to start Turnabout Legacy in the… fifth game? And I’m just as pumped as when I started playing these games.
I’d also kind of put it in a “cozier” type of game category? Not for content because some of it is crazy, but in the way it’s structured the same way and all the reading makes me doze off sometimes because it can be calming to engage yourself in a really compelling story. I dunno, maybe I’m the only one that finds that. I guess the general takeaway is that the reading doesn’t have to be an issue!
