I’ve seen a good few fandom conspiracy theories in my time but whatever’s happening over in the Stranger Things community really does look juicy. Congratulations and condolences, gay 80’s bicycle boy shippers

When the random e celeb I hate just for being annoying is outed as being way worse then I could possibly imagine
I just had someone decline my suggestion to add the names of a person’s parents and children to their memorial on FindAGrave, because, and I quote, “this memorial is about Dianna, not her children.” Which is officially the most bizarre reason I’ve ever encountered for someone declining an edit on there.
I fear we as an internet have lost our privileges to use the phrase “media literacy is dead”. I’m revoking it. Ppl be saying that for literally everything. No media literacy is not dead bc someone didn’t pick up on subtle foreshadowing.
Most people only know the Spacebattles Memetic Complex from Wormposting but that place has some hysterical internet lore to its name
>Scaly murderer with a god complex
>‘King Penguin’
>Online wars which resulted in the splitting of the community on multiple occasions, resulted in a bunch of competing sister-sites, and drove at least one person to madness
>This included a hidden community of Nazis who were driven off and formed their own Spacebattles with blackjack and hookers
>Long-lasting feud with a far-right sci fi author
>Got mentioned in German news media, I think?
>Speaking of Wildbow, the fact that he left SB but stayed on Reddit is…interesting
>Oh yeah and also the most batshit political theory I have read in…some time:
This is too funny, omfl.
Huh, there’s been a slight uptick in likes for my Mr Enter posts, I wonder why?
*Finds out he made a review of Turning Red, and there was a part of it where he was complaining about the lack of attention given to 9/11 (as it had happened around the time the movie was set in)*
... Wut?
I wanted to know, since we only know tom's perspective, what does Jake in eleutherophobia think abt the matter over mind group? Did he find tom's participation on it surprising? did he think it was a good idea? What does he think people do on those meetings? Is he curious at all about it? etc etc...
[Speculation upon my fic, located here.]
Jake spends a fair amount of time in those forums: ones about tracing the limits of yeerk activity, debating old news stories, and otherwise discussing the impact of the war. Therefore, he’d probably have a much better grasp of what the civilian outsiders think of Matter Over Mind. For instance, Jake would probably notice (whereas Tom has no idea) that half the internet assumes Tom is Eva’s bodyguard.
It’s pretty clear to Jake where so many people are getting that idea from. Those two make for a striking visual. The tiny middle-aged rabble-rouser in her paisley skirts — and her shadow, six feet four inches of blank-faced silent muscle. Most people seem unable to wrap their minds around the fact that Tom could ever be exactly what he and Eva claim he is: her secretary, receptionist, and personal assistant. They seem equally unaware that Eva would be able to defend herself, despite news footage from the Battle of Santa Barbara where she can clearly be seen shooting Bug fighters out of the sky with a homemade dracon cannon.
There’s no small amount of speculation that the backpack Tom carries to all of their press events carries everything from body armor to handheld shredders, even though Jake knows perfectly well it’s mostly full of paperwork, speech notes, and occasionally Eva’s laptop. Eva fascinates a lot of people, from the ones speculating that she’s secretly using Yeerk Empire contacts and resources to control the government, to the ones who think she’s cool because there aren’t enough female-run NGOs in the world. The whole thing irks Jake somewhat. It seems vaguely sexist, everyone assuming that Tom must exist to fight off bad guys Eva herself would be too helpless to face.
Jake has a certain level of O.G. respect in a lot of those forums even without his real name, simply because his was one of the few accounts posting about yeerks before news of the invasion officially broke. Which is why, when Bball24 makes a post pointing out that the mystery “bodyguard” is just another ex-host, specifically Visser Seventeen’s ex-host, it makes an effect. Just… not the effect Jake intended.
GoVikes’ announcement of Guys, guys, just confirmed: EVA ALVAREZ’S BODYGUARD IS A MORPHER!!! becomes the most-viewed post on YeerksAreOutThere.Com in 3 hours flat. From there, the copypasta infects pretty much every conversation on the forum, and the Matter Over Mind: The Sharing 2.0??? thread (whose name Jake is constantly campaigning to change) descends into an argument spiral about how much money it must cost to hire a morph-capable bodyguard.
Arguing at dumb strangers over the internet doesn’t do any favors for Jake’s blood pressure. He gives up on YeerksAreOutThere.Com for good that same afternoon. TobiasWatch.Org has its own forum dedicated to the ex-host morphers, though. The main site itself is downright hilarious: it’s page after page with hundreds of blurry, distant photos of birds (most of which aren’t even red-tailed hawks) that well-meaning uberfans desperately try to stitch into a narrative about where Tobias is and what he might be doing. On any given day it will have a photo of probably-a-crow eating out of a chips bag, 400 comments on said photo that inevitably descend into a screaming match about whether or not eating chips out of a bag is proof that a bird is secretly human, two snapshots of at-least-it’s-a-red-tailed-hawk offered as proof that Tobias can’t be eating potato chips in Reno because obviously he’s in Maine right now, and a semi-decent discussion of how the other morphers are doing.
Anyway, there’s a part of Jake that finds the chat rooms fascinating in their own right. And there’s a part of Jake that really does want to defend Matter Over Mind, because… because of the easy relaxation in Tom’s shoulders when he comes home on Monday and Thursday evenings. Because of the way that just last week Marco said “my mom just about blew a gasket when she found out about us going to Leeran,” and then grinned like this was the coolest thing that had ever happened to him. Because of the odd, slangy way that the hosts have taken to talking with each other, some mix of in-jokes and mumbling and the occasional odd word of Galard.
Because, after too many years of lonely secrets, it’s nice to talk about it all with other people. To know that the war happened to everyone. To feel not just less alone, but ordinary. Normal. One among many.
Jake does, however, take the time to upvote the picture of the crow from Nevada. Because deep down, he’s also just a little bit of a troll at heart.
