The sound of rain hitting the hospital room window is grating on Regulus’s nerves.
Tap tap taptaptap.
He thinks the universe is playing some cruel trick on him, annoying him on a day like today. But when he really thinks about it, the universe has really made his whole life into one big cruel trick.
Taptap tap TAPTAPTAP.
Regulus stares absentmindedly out the window as the rain gets heavier, the sky gets darker. He pulls his knees up to his chest from his spot on the bed, wrapping his arms around them tightly.
Tap TAP.
He’s not sure why he’s so nervous, if anything he should be happy. He’s finally getting out of this suffocating hospital with its blank walls and sterile chemical smell and nurses who barge in without permission and pretend to act like nothing’s wrong with him.
TAP TAP TAP.
Because that’s the thing, isn’t it? The reason he’s even here. The reason he’s been here for the past year. Well, eleven months, one week, three days, five hours, and forty-eight minutes to be exact. But who’s counting?
But it’s fine, Regulus is better now. At least that’s what they told him. He’s not sure if it’s entirely true. But if it gets him out of this hospital he’s not going to contradict a licensed medical professional.
TAP TAP TAPTAPTAPTAP.
Knock knock knock.
