Could you help me with a medical question I have re a fanfic I'm writing? Someone needs to take a blood sample from another character for analysis and also give him an injection (sth to calm him down a bit). Would this be done in one go with, for example, a butterfly needle, or would one do it seperately, which would mean two punctures? An IV isn't required so they wouldn't start an IV line. Thanks in advance!
Really, in this case they would definitely place an IV line. They may not have tubing or IV fluids running, but if they had to give an IV drug in a medical setting, they wouldn’t give it through a metal needle (not only could a metal needle slip out of the vein and cause injury under the best of circumstances, but it can take more than a minute to push some IV drugs- if someone’s already not calm, or if they’re moving, this would be nearly impossible to do safely). Even if it was just for the one injection, if it had to be IV, they would still insert something that looks like this:
As they’re putting this in, they can pull “labs” (blood) through it- the person would only have to be poked once (assuming good veins/good phlebotomist). Win-win.
NOTE: If they’re giving a sedative, they’d also want to keep the IV line for safety reasons. Some drugs cause blood pressure or respiratory rates to go too low, and they’d want to have “access” in case of an emergency.
If the person wasn’t calm enough for someone to place one of these (even paramedics and emergency department nurses have limits), but still posed a danger to themselves or others and needed the medication right this second, there is another, safer, option. Instead of trying to hold someone down to put in an IV, they’d give an injection into the muscle, called an “IM injection.” IM injections take a little longer to work, but can be given faster and a lot less precisely, with less risk of injury to all involved (think the hospital scene in Thor). Once the person was calm/sedated, they could quickly put an IV line in for future use.
