For my 2nd drawing for mermay I made a drawing of the Cameroon folklore creature jengu. They're protective water spirits that can heal and look a lot like a typical mermaid in most of the depictions I've seen.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. For today I wanted to showcase two characters from my Celeste the Witch idea who are an established couple; the mermaid* barista and the fairy performer. I'm still thinking of names for these two though I'm leaning towards Marie and Nick (I am open to suggestions). The musical notes I included (a lot of work to make those) actually play part of a song so if anyone's musically inclined feel free to guess the song.
As always, comments and critiques are welcome.
*Marie is specifically a Jengu from Cameroon mythology.
Die Hexe, Jengu. Watercolor, 2023. Jengu are a race of mer-witches from the western coast of Africa, around Guinea and Cameroon. They're described as enchanting women with radiant, gap-toothed smiles, who sometimes help or hinder human children on their path to maturity. This one is wearing Parisian-style eyeglasses and a striped top to evoke the regional style in the 1920's, during a Franko-German colonial era of border disputes and Christian missions. She has the fins of a tiger fish, and wears dreadlocks reminiscent of Red Gracilaria, a seaweed cultivated on the modern shores of Cameroon.
Day 9 of Black History Month! Featuring my girl Thia (orange mermaid) & her sister Marjani (pastel mermaid belongs to @pixiesera ) Thia has a complicated relationship with her parents because she’s a Lesbian but she didn’t go through it alone! Big sister has her back.
Jengu
Plural: Miengu
Origin: Cameroon, West Africa
Classification: Merfolk, Spirit
Appearance: The miengu are beautiful mermaid water spirits with long hair and gaps between their teeth
The miengu live in rivers and the sea and bring good fortune to those that worship them. Miengu can cure diseases and are intermediaries between the living and the world of spirits
J is for Jengu - beautiful and strong gap-toothed mermaids from the rivers and the sea of Cameroon. With exceptional healing abilities, they are known to protect humans that enter their waters. It just might take them a while to get to you if the Jengu isn't in the water with you.
