Birgitte spends mid-day harvesting the freshest produce from the Goth kitchen garden to accompany the mutton chops she'd picked up from the Jacquet's Butcher shop that morning. Though the Goths are not known for lavish habits, today Mortimer requested that Birgitte prepare a meal of the highest quality to show proper hospitality to Investigator Mole.

When Mole arrives for supper, Mortimer attempts to maintain the dignified composure befitting a mayor, though the deep shadows under his eyes speak louder than any words. Over the clatter of cutlery and the glow of lamplight, Mole discusses his findings so far: vague reports of campsites and strangers in the woods, and scattered clues pointing toward foul play. Cassandra listens with stiff-backed composure while Alexander leans forward, eager for any sign that his mother might yet be found.

Once Cassandra and Alexander withdraw for the night, Mortimer decides it is time to discuss matters he did not want to mention in front of his children. He gestures toward the parlor, the location of the empty spot where the wedding portrait once hung. “I fear,” he says quietly, “that Bella’s disappearance is part of something larger. Freedom Hollow has changed. Crime seeps into its edges like rot in old wood.”

“I won’t lie to you, Mayor,” Mole replies, “Whoever planned this was deliberate. They took her quickly, quietly, and without leaving much trace, but I’ll bring back whatever truth there is to find, Mayor. That I promise.”

John showed up at the Lothario condo immediately, even though he didn't expect Nina to call him after such a long time and ask him to show up.

John: I know I promised to always be there when you need me, but I thought you two figured out your things by now. And my wife was giving me a weird look when I dropped breakfast to come all the way here.

Nina: Wait- wife? You're married?

John: Well... it's not like I was going to wait forever and see if you divorce your husband or not, right? I ended up seeing a lovely girl and we're now married. Have a cute son, too. Want to see pics?

Nina: Maybe next time... I just remembered I left the oven on. Next door. In my brother's house. Sorry for wasting your time.

John's visit was a brutal wake-up call for Nina. She was upset with him moving on, even though she was married and had no intention on cheating. It made her feel horrible and at the same time relieved, that John didn't find out why she invited him over.
