Tonight will both make and break the fandom, and I honestly have no idea what to expect.

But I just wanted to extend a virtual group hug to all in the fandom, no matter the ship or the character preferences. It’s been a wild ride guys, but you all made it worthwhile.

I’ve cracked the Jonerys code

I think I’ve figured out why people initially shipped Jon and Daenerys, and still flock to it today. 

It’s superficially attractive. On the surface it sounds like a groundbreaking partnership between two juggernauts who are complete opposites, but want the same thing. They're the saviors of their respective circumstances. They seem like a good idea, but in reality they aren't. 

The fire and ice trope has frankly been exhausted in the media so its lost its luster. Literature has moved beyond characters who are only GOOD or Bad, not a mix of both. Labeling Jonerys as the OTP That Was Promised completely does away with this concept of a layered protagonist. It forces the two into a relationship that sounds indisputably benevolent, but it doesn't take into account the characters as individuals. They are lumped together under a broad label of Hero/Heroine or Super Couple. 

Many ideas seem like a good idea when they are first conceived, for instance: eating doughnuts all day, everyday, challenging reason and trying to be the first human to fly unaided, or one day wake up and decide to be a prima ballerina. These are all attractive ideas that we want to root for in a knee jerk reaction, but the ultimate indicator for the value of these ideas is are they SENSIBLE, HEALTHY, AND POSSIBLE? 

Jon and Daenerys clash as characters to such an extent that a prolonged romantic relationship would destroy them both. But Jonerys shippers fall into the trap of being perpetually star struck by what appears to be a good idea at the start, but come up short when it is time to consider that idea’s actual merits.
