How Do You Write a Long/In Depth Fic Comment?

First of all, let me say-- there's no 'wrong' way to write a fic comment (unless you are being rude or offering unsolicited concrit). Short comments are good, emojis are good-- all of it's good! Don't take me making this explainer to mean you have to write long, analytical comments. Express yourself however you want! Authors love hearing about how much you liked their work no matter how you choose to tell them.

This is meant to be a guide for people who want to do this, but don't really know how, because they find it difficult to express themselves, or don't know what authors like to hear. If that's you, let's continue below the cut!

Why should you do this?

because it's fun!

because you really like someone's work!

because it's motivating for an author, and can sometimes inspire them to post more, or re-post old stuff!

because it's usually a great conversation starter! Some of my best fandom friends have been made in comment threads on AO3!

What do authors want to hear about in long comments?

Many things, but primarily:

What you liked about their work

Why you liked it

You can show them what you liked by quoting their work back at them (I find it useful to put quoted text in an indented section; the html code for this is <blockquote>text</blockquote>), talking generally about which events or characters you enjoyed most, or, if you have thoughts about it, what you liked about the structural parts of their work-- i.e. plot, pacing, sentence structure, etc.

As for telling them why you liked something, getting into emotional reactions is great for this-- you can tell them where you laughed, or cried, or where you felt moved by something they said. If you found the way they had the characters talk or think realistic or relatable, tell them that! If you want to, authors love hearing that people noticed them foreshadowing events, or planting clues within the text.

You can also tell them where you were when you read it, or your overall experience -- did you read at 3 am? Do you have school or work tomorrow, but you just had to finish reading? Did you read their fic in the club? Tell them! And if you're feeling especially brave or you want to share, feel free to tell authors how or why you related to the text. If it makes you uncomfortable, don't worry about it, but those are some of my favorite comments to reread.

How do I comment on specific parts/lines of a fic?

Okay, a demonstration! I am going to pretend to analyze my own work here, for convenience:

He dreams of it, ceaselessly. It seems to echo throughout his days; he cannot let his mind drift too far, lest he fall back into it. He has to cling to this world, like a drowning man to a raft, though it rarely feels worth the effort.

Okay, so let's pretend I read this section and I really liked it. If you want to talk about that, stop and consider what about it was special, for you. Maybe I thought that the third sentence really captured what it felt like to be depressed, or the second reminded me of something that happened in my own life. I might say:

"I really loved this part! I found the way you wrote about [the character's] feelings in this paragraph so relatable; I think you captured exactly what it feels like to feel consistently hopeless."

You can also take a look at the way the author has written the sentences-- try reading them out loud. If I think the last line has a nice sound, I might say something like:

"I liked how you chose to structure the last sentence! The grammar you used gave it a really nice combination of phrases and stops. I loved how it sounded, and the rhythm the punctuation created."

Another thing you could talk about was how the sentence or paragraph made you feel about the character. If that section made me feel particularly sorry for them, or if this was the point in the story where I connected strongly with them, I might say:

I think this part worked really well to demonstrate how [character] felt! You communicated the pain they were in really effectively, and I was very connected to them, during this part.

You can also just express your excitement! I love great writing, and sometimes I just keysmash, or put a million exclamation points, or say AHHHHHHH!!!

Anyone ever write so much in a comment and then got immediately embarrassed as soon as you pressed send?

like......I wrote 4 comments because I hit the character limit 3 times. Sent them back to back so the author knows they are suppoused to be together.

But then I felt this wash of embarrassment roll over me like a wave cuz it might be a bit much you know? I write large comments pretty regularly.....but 4? In one go?

I'm not deleting them cuz I spelled checked the comments and it took a while....but a small part of me is hoping the author doesn't see it?

Like I praised the chapter ALOT obviously. I favorited it abd WILL be rereading when I have time. But I also went on specific tangents about alternative routes or why one thing made me feel a certain way and why and what it made me think of.

What if they took it as critism or it makws them doubt what they wrote?! Did I put in enough compliments so they understand i love it as is?! DID I PUT IN TOO MANY THAT IT MIGHT SEEM INSINCERE?!

What if they just see the giant comments and assume it's bad without reading it?

Normally I'm pretty chill. I've mostly toned myself down a bit or double checked my wording just in case. But I'm not going to know til they've read the comment.....but what if they do and it's a bad reaction?

What if it puts pressure that something they wrote for fun got me analyzing it?!

And what if they read it just before I delete it and then think I don't like it anymore?!

The self consciousness hit like a brick to the face!

Anyone else understand the feeling?

First of all - Judaism is both ethnicity and a religion, but Islam and Christianity aren't, so I changed your question slightly.

There aren't other religionstates

Actually, there are many Muslim states (57, 56 of them mention Islamic law in their constitution/similar) and christian states (100+). You're just used to consider it as the "default", so you don't really see it.

Some questions to see it more clearly:

What day the work week starts?(Sunday? Monday? Saturday?)

What are the "default" holiday/vacation days in the country? (Eg. Christmas and Easter? Passover and Sukkot? Eed (id?) AlFiter and Mawlid Un Nabi? Lunar new year?)

What is the calendar used in the country? Just the Georgian calendar, or any relation to the the jewish calander, the Hijra, or other calanders?

I can continue, but I guess you understand.

(If you don't, try compare the calanders from same year of America, China, India, Morocco and Israel.)

Race and Religion (ft. Nazis).

Like I said at the start, it looks like a confusion between race, ethnicity, and religion.

Race - fake thing, based on skin colour and og continent?. (Ok, not completely, I guess? But as 90% of the people I know are any version of mix, so...)

What the Nazis wanted was world with only clean-best-people, looking for the übermantch, the "super-man". This is same reason they killed gays and disabled people - they "filth" the pureblood Aris.

I won't get deeper into it. As jew, queer and disabled, I'm very tired of hearing why my death is a good thing.

Religion - what one believes, or follow. Usually has a mixture of ritual (things to do), beliefs (things to feel/think), and many ways affects daily life, like having rules about what to do, how to behave, etc.

(I tried to use the most common things, so it would apply to not only monotheism.)

Ethnicity:

Ethnicity - culture and history and narrative. where did you come from.

Ethnicity has been defined as: "the social group a person belongs to, and either identifies with or is identified with by others, as a result of a mix of cultural and other factors including language, diet, religion, ancestry and physical features traditionally associated with race".

As you can see, Judaism is a religion, but also ethnicity - we have our language, Hebrew (the oldest artifact with Hebrew writing is about 3,300 years old), religion (Judaism), diet (Kosher), ancestry (all descendants of Yaakov, also known as Israel, that was the son of Itzhak, the son of Avraham, etc.) physical features - even the most Ashkenazi Met, blond, blue eyes, lobster-in-the-son Jew (that was born to Jewish family, not converted) has more in common, DNA speaking, with middle Easterns then with their neighbours.

20% (2m) of the citizens of Israel are Arabs (from arab-speaking communities.)

84% of those, or 18.1% of Israel population (~1.6m) are Muslims, 8%, or 1.3% of IP (~160k) are Christians, another 8% (1.5% of ip) are Druze, that sometimes prefer to be considered as their own separate group.

Also other minorities such as Circassians (Adigas), Bahá'í, etc.

~5.5% are "other"/no religion registered.

I hate long comments.

The font on Tumblr is just too small and my eyes are not good enough to read a wall of text.

ah yes, the standard "you didn't have to write a novel" comment. And this time it's from someone with the r slur in their name! Boy, you just gotta love it :) /joking tone.

To be serious though, I'm so used to these. I write long comments and this one was about my experiences and thoughts over some conservative person The Queer Kiwi was talking about. I always get "what's with the essay bestie" "no one reads long comments" "you didn't have to write a novel" "I'm not reading that" every time. Okay, fantastic :) I don't care anymore. Like it's still anxiety inducing, but it's like...if I don't write long comments, people misunderstand me and then get angry. If I do write long comments then people just comment that. So I'll take those comments any day. Like good for you? Thanks? As if I haven't heard it a million times. I'm autistic and I'm gonna ramble and analyze. So just like? Fine? I did get some nice replies that encouraged me and plenty of people liked my comment so I especially don't care. But I just had to vent cause yeah I don't care, but I still have comment anxiety and this helps decrease my anxiety /srs

I consider it a rather hostile, and often somewhat intellectually dishonest thing to do to comment “wow you write too much” or “I’m not reading all that” or any similar or equivalent comments on people’s posts.

It’s like, I didn’t assume that you, or anyone, would take the time to read my commentary. No one has any obligation to do so and I never claimed anything to the contrary. You don’t want to read it? Then don’t. I won’t hold it against you.

But if you go out of the way to comment on the fact that you’re not reading my commentary, I’ll interpret this as an insult. You have now taken time out of your day to imply that my commentary was not worth reading. But I also start questioning whether you’re being honest. If the commentary really wasn’t worth reading, then why in the world would it be worth commenting on? Something doesn’t jive here.

I have noticed that people often use comments like this to bully others and shut down their voices, leveraging their audience and their esteem with this audience to do so. I.e. they’re not just saying “I didn’t read this”, but by implying that it’s not worth reading and then sharing that commentary openly, they’re signaling to their audience not to read the commentary in question. But they’re doing it without giving any explanation or rationale.

I.e. they’re not saying: “This commentary is problematic or flawed (because of these valid reasons).” Rather, they’re using their social status or influence to shut down a perspective without engaging in it.

When people do this, I get suspicious. What was it in the perspective that they felt threatened enough by, that they went out of their way to comment on it in a way that would discourage others from reading it?

Because I’ve seen people use this tactic time and time again to shut down reasonable criticisms and exclude perspectives that disagree with theirs. So when people react this way, it makes me start questioning the validity of their own viewpoints, even if I initially agreed with them. Ironically, it makes me more willing and motivated to read the commentary that they were trying to shut down.

The commentary that they reacted negatively to isn’t always valid. Sometimes it’s just a bunch of flawed, long-winded drivel and the person who commented on it was just annoyed, and I quickly see this and move on.

But sometimes I find some really valid and worthwhile commentary lurking behind these sorts of comments.

I think it’s worth being mindful of this stuff when you see it. I also tend to unfollow people who remark about stuff being too long for them to read, because I find it at a bare minimum, rude and negative, but it often masks deeper issues that are even more concerning.

Hi! Sorry, I saw this, then forgot about it, then remembered but was busy… anyway I’ll post an edited version here.

This was originally a long comment I made in a youtube discussion.  It’s not so much a detailed plot outline as it is an overview of ideas which could go in a 3rd and 4th season. I might be overthinking what was a cute girly series about singing mermaids but I enjoyed it, and it’s fun to imagine.Anyway, here it is:

Let’s imagine a season 3. Here’s my thoughts:I want to see Hanon and Rina do the same thing Lucia did in season one - carefully drop hints and make appearances in mermaid form so that Masahiro and Nagisa will work out they are mermaids, and they don’t have to break up. Even if they must be separate,  the mermaids could be living in their own kingdoms but making regular visits to the Pearl Pairi. I suggest the big bad guy of this season could be  a human who means well, (or maybe doesn’t), who wants to expose mermaids to the world. This would be quite different to the first two baddies.  A human villain would let the show go beyond the

Also, I want to see the black beauty sisters become friends and allies of the mermaids. The had the most character development of everyone in the second season, and potential is there for them to have a far more complex and interesting relationship.

But one thing I really want, is to see the mermaid world fleshed out a lot more. The best part of season 2, imho, was Seria’s story, as we got to see some more of what it’s like to be a mermaid, how they are born and such. There are still are so  many things that could be answered, and IDK if some of these were in the manga, but they weren’t in the anime.Here are a bunch of questions, which answering would provide lots of avenues for worldbuilding and backstory.

Not all of these would need to be addressed in show, but answers should at least exist for the effect they have on the plot and characters:

Why were the kingdoms so separate from each other, when these mermaids seem to be able to cross oceans in a day?

Why did Karen and Noelle never meet? Was there some sort of disaster, which made it necessary to separate the kingdoms, (beyond  what Sara did?)

Why are all the princesses relatively close in age? Did the last incarnations just happen to die at a similar time?

How do mermaids have mothers, though they are born from pearls? Its it some sort of caretaker role?How does the mermaid civilization even work? How does goddess Aqua rRegina fit in? (their architecture looked very much like that of humans, designed for walking not swimming.)

Do they have other powers which come through signing? Sara managed to hold back a tsunami with a song. It would be great to see the princesses learn more about what they can do

What actually are their princess duties, beyond ceremonial?  

They don’t seem to be in charge of the day to day running of the kingdoms, they’re too young, and the kingdoms run fine while they’re off playing human on land. Who is running the kingdoms now? Will the princesses take over when they’re old enough? How does this happen?

Maybe a 4th series, with slightly older versions of the characters could go more into detail on such things.  Plot conflict could come  from them trying to manage their duties as Princesses full time, while still trying to maintain friendships and romance in their spare time..Somewhere in this, Kaito needs to create a good panthalassa kingdom, (there must be other Panthalassa out there if Rhito exists - maybe he can try finding them?)  and they need to have a main bad guy who looks like they’re going to be a third repeat of the “other self” thing, but it turns out to be a  coincidence, and parodies the silly parts of the season 2 plot.

We also need a sad and serious part- if mermaids turning to bubbles is a thing, we need to see it. Some poor mermaid needs to get done in :(

This could be the bigger plot thread of this season. This turn into bubbles if a human sees you seems like a curse, and could be a part of a bigger picture of where mermaids came from in the first place, and what their relationship to humanity is. I’m imagining this to be the final season, so addressing bigger themes like this seems right. But, it  all ends with them empowering Aqua Regina to break the whole turn into bubbles curse thing, and they all live happily ever after. Including Karen and her scientist would be boyfriend.And that’s it. That’s my thoughts on how more Mermaid Melody could go.
