Relevant: The soul of the First Hero beckons, and Spirit says…

Spirit will definitely keep showing up in the extras and side content of Wisdomverse!!!

I’m a huge fan of Spirit Tracks; I couldn’t possibly ignore train boi :).

In fact, if I ever get around to writing a sequel to The Secrets We Keep, Spirit will play a large role, for reasons. But he won’t be showing up in TSWK as is. He just doesn’t fit the theme, and as much as I love him, I don’t want to shoehorn him into a story like that 😆.

On a relevant note, Spirit in Wisdomverse is the only Link (so far) to actively choose to give up his Hero title.

Now’s as good a time as any to go into depth on:

Turning Down the Quest

In Wisdomverse, the Chain has met Spirit already before the events of TSWK, when the portals randomly dropped them in his era for a few days. A few of the Links knew of his existence even before that, because while Spirit likes to stay in his home era, Phantom gets invited everywhere, and she tends to talk about her Link a decent amount :).

Regardless, in Wisdomverse, just like he did with HW and would have done with Smash if he was invited, Spirit politely turned down the Chain in favor of staying in his era.

He can still fight, but he hasn’t practiced as much, and he’d rather not, if given the option. Spirit thinks of himself as an engineer first and a hero second.

Like almost all decisions I make in WV, this is based on something from canon!

Phantom’s Question

Near the end of Spirit Tracks, Phantom asks Spirit what he’ll do with the rest of his life once all this is over.

I really like this dialogue!

In game, it doesn’t change too much: just a little difference in the ending cutscenes. But what a cool way to show the players what Spirit is at his core— he could be a hero, or an engineer, or both, if he wants! It speaks to how planning-oriented these two are— and honestly, it’s very sweet for Phantom to ask. She’s not just interested in his worth as a hero. She’s interested in him.

Spirit’s Choice

In WV, he selects Engineer here.

This is for two narrative reasons:

Throughout the game, I feel like it was clear that his job as a train engineer brings Spirit joy in a way that heroing does not. Sure, he’s glad to fight to save Phantom, but he’d really rather not.

I approach all my character decisions with the mindset of trying to make each Link and Zelda unique— and this is something that’s unique to him.

Because no one else ever really had that choice.

Reluctant Heroes

Even Time and Legend, who probably hate their role the most, still also love being a hero just as much. They cannot escape their duty as heroes no matter how much they want to.

It’s not even like they’re forced into it— it’s just who they are. Legend goes on six adventures. Time tries to live a simple life with Malon, but he leaves to fight the Third Imprisoning War, and canonically comes back even after death to train Twilight.

These two are tsunderes for heroism. It breaks them, sometimes, but they just don’t stop. Time is a farmer, but he’s also still a hero.

Why Spirit Gets to Choose

Imo, it’s a combination of multiple factors that gets Spirit that choice where no one else does.

His world is relatively safe. Not too many monsters around, like in Hyrule’s, Wild’s, or Legend’s eras.

His people have an abundance of stable, solid land with lots of farming regions and resources to go around. He doesn’t need to go claim new territory like Wind or Sky.

His era’s soldiers are competent, unlike Twilight’s. Wind set them up well, clearly— they’re vigilant, and sneaking Phantom out of the palace at the beginning can actually be quite difficult.

He isn’t plagued by a personal guilt that keeps him searching, like Four.

There aren’t any political/military dissidents lurking around, like in Time’s or Warriors’ eras. The people of New Hyrule are new to this land, and haven’t yet had time to form such factions and rivalries. They’re in the early-mid-civilization state of surviving and thriving.

He’s the only hero who has never been to Hyrule proper. Maybe this distance makes it easier for him to break tradition.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly— Phantom herself is equally the hero of her era.

It’s that last reason I like the most.

There are still dangers lurking in New Hyrule, and who knows what the future holds. But Spirit can freely set down the hero’s mantle and lift up the engineer’s wrench again because no matter what foes approach, he trusts Phantom to take care of it.

Phantom realizes that, and loves that she can take on this responsibility for him.

Meanwhile, what his era truly needs isn’t a traditional hero, it’s transportation infrastructure: something to open up the world for its citizens and facilitate technological advancement.

And all this, of course, leaves Spirit free to be heroic in the way he truly loves most, and lets him do what he does best:

Drive cool trains :)

I recently hopped on the LU train (pun intended)

Spirit and Phantom (spirit tracks Link and Zelda) are dating. I headcanon they became official after the events of the game and during their adventure with the other Links and Zeldas, they write letters to each other. Alot.

Phantom thought his train themed pick up lines are cute, while the others....not so much. Time is the one who tells the others to leave them be (he understands the importance of corny phase of young love lmao. It's a canon event)

Opera House AU Thoughts

In no random order, here's some random factoids and stuff for the AU

Wild lives in Flora's family's garage. He came to Crown City as a exchange student as a part of a program with his Hebra high-school, and they gave him the garage apartment so he 'won't be disturbed during his studies' (r: won't mess up their nice house or inconvenience them) He loves it, and Flora frequently sneaks over to spend time with him now.

Wild has a motorcycle that he uses to get around because cars are just inconvenient in Hebra, since the roads kinda just suck and are all super narrow, and most of the locals are Rito anyway, so roads aren't used much to begin with.

Paya and Impa are staff at Flora's folks' house. Impa is their housekeeper and Paya is her daughter

Hylia is the biggest stage actress of all time in the history of the city, kinda their Marylin Monroe or some such, and even though she's long since retired, Flora is her grand-daughter and thus being pressured by her parents to follow in Grandma's footsteps. She hates it

In a nod to the games, Twilight met Midna when they ended up in the same prison cell at the local Police Station. Midna was framed for something like fraud or some such relating to her company and Twilight was involved in a street fight (he was trying to protect Colin). Midna bailed them both out in exchange for Twilight helping her clear her name, and the rest is history

Lullaby is Hylia's daughter and thus Flora's aunt. They're not really that close, but it does mean that she unfortunately is present for, and aware of, a lot of the family drama. She tends to try to avoid it when she can though under the premise of being busy with work and/or Time needing something. He's her official scapegoat for most things, and he hates it.

Time can't drive. Well, legally anyway. Having only one eye (the other is a glass eye because he doesn't want an eye patch) means he has exactly zero depth perception and can't pass a licensing exam to save his literal life. He has to rely on either public transport or Malon for rides. Sometimes this means one of the crew ends up needing to help him get places and that's awkward for everyone (except Twilight, who likes the silent company)

Artemis and Phantom are sisters. They're distant cousins of Flora and Lullaby.

Twilight and Legend have a downstairs neighbor who is The Cat Lady. Her name is unknown, and they can't bring themselves to ask, but both boys visit her semi-regularily to help out with odd jobs and to pet the cats. None of the cats are supposed to be in the building, but none of the tenants ever tell the landlord that the 'strays' actually have a caretaker (two, actually, since Twilight basically does it part-time too now)

Shade and Wolfie are the Opera House 'mascots', or so Wind will claim. Shade is Time's service animal, though no one is sure if that's because of his partial blindness or some other reason. Wolfie is Wild's

Wild lost his family in a car accident when he was a kid that left him with some rather severe scarring. Teba and Saki adopted him afterwards. The accident gave him some brain damage that sort of left him without any memories but also means he has almost sort of seizures, hence why he has Wolfie now.

Wolfie is actually Shade's pup. Malon got Shade for Time, and through circumstances involving one of the ranch dogs, that led to a batch of puppies (much to Time's disappointment with his dog). Wolfie, by total chance, ended up getting adopted by Teba as a gift for Wild, and now they go visit Lon Lon sometimes to see Papa Shade (and Time, who might have gotten attached to the pup and it's boy)

Hyrule used to work at Malo-Mart (think hylian Walmart) and now detests going there for any reason at all. Will shit talk that place into the ground if given the chance, He has all the dirty secrets and no reason not to spill them.

Dusk had Legend and Fable prematurely, so both of them have some slight health issues. Legend's got a bad heart and both of them have shit immune systems.

Fable was actually raised in Labrynna, where her dad was working for Ambi, and that led to her being rather close with Ambi's son, Ralph, who now considers it his responsibility to act as a sort of older brother to her, as neither of them had any actual siblings and with Raven dead, Fable is his mother's ward.

Ambi is an ambassador to Hyrule and is currently living at the embassy in Crown City. Ralph and Fable live with her, and Fable is pursuing her dreams of being an actress, since her dad used to say her mom was one. It's total chance that she's at Crown Opera with Dusk and Legend

Legend created a Tik-Tok for Time that's just videos of the old man playing guitar. He's not very popular (not cuz he's bad, he just doesn't know how to make his stuff seen and doesn't care enough to want to bother), but there are plenty of people who comment that his style reminds them of old rock guitarist Major-A

Dusk and Midna are both really good at roller skating. It was big when they were in school and both girls learned how to do it and do it well. Dusk's parents might have had her in figure skating classes and she employs a lot of that skill when on wheels too

Time is also really good at skating for someone with only one eye, but he did grow up in the 80s so it's no huge shocker. Lullaby, in contrast, is very bad at it, and he likes rubbing it in her face because it's one of the only things he can do better than her and they both know it

The younger staff of the opera are all aware that, with the right incentives, they can bribe Legend into helping them with almost anything. He's not the best at stuff, but he does have the most skills ('Jack of all trades, master of none, but better than master of one' y'know? And yes, someone did give him a shirt with that on it). Usually, bribes involve sweets or caffiene, but sometimes the right shiny thing is all that it takes. Flora might call him their canary (because if he's singing than all is well in the opera) but Wild likes to joke he's a magpie too.

Ravio is the #1 supplier of Legend Bribes to the rest because he somehow always has the perfect shiny things.

Time and Malon have been married for over ten years but most of the opera has no idea because they still flirt and get flustered at each other like they're in the early stages of a crush.

Malon has a side gig (yes, on top of ranch work and being a vocal coach) and performs at small country bars and the like. She flirts with Time the entire time if he's there and acts like he's a total stranger she's trying to pick up and he plays into it every time. Twilight thinks they're unbearable.

Gully is one of Twilight and Legend's neighbors, and he goes to school with Aryll. They're close friends and often go to each other's places after school. If they go to Gully's, than they always stop to knock on the Sutherland's door and say hi to Twi and Ledge, and if it's Aryll's then Gully shares all the news from his building with Wind and Wars.

This does mean that Wars and Legend run into each other at pickup sometimes though, because if Gully's parents are too busy, they'll ask Legend to get their kid for them and he's really bad at saying no (not that he'd want to). There have been concerns from parents about the two of them being seen verbally smacking down outside the school, but it's just What They Do, because it's more fun to pick a fight over something random while they wait, and they're perfectly cordial when they part ways. (Legend secretly loves playing up the soccer mom role and Warriors matches his energy every time). This the closest to a Violet Incident this AU will have (I think)

Wind has been trying since he met Legend to figure out where he gets all the band merch he wears (it's Time. Time has the OGs from his days as a rocker and gets a kick out of giving merch to Twilight and Legend because they're the only ones who know about that part of his life, other than Lullaby and Malon, and they're sworn to secrecy about it). There have been bribe attempts. He's slowly losing is mind over it. Legend might be purposefully making it worse.

There's a chart kept on the wall at the opera, and which it is Flora's job to mind: "How Many Cups of Coffee Has Four Had" When it exceeds 4, all caffiene must be hidden. The nickname Four is, unfortunately, because anything MORE than 4 means chaos and a brand of insanity even the opera can't handle.

Sun and Sky have a small aviary by their house, and each have a pet macaw that lives there, as well as several smaller birds. They are every inch bird parents and can and will spend hours talking about it with anyone who will listen.

Midna runs a high-end fashion company and, while they were dating, managed to convince Twilight to model for her for a short while. Warriors' delights in bringing this up at every opportunity, and yes, he has clippings on hand to flash around. Twilight hates it and regrets it more than he regrets almost anything else in his life (he looked amazing, but he does not think so and he hates the fact that he can see his own face on billboards now).

Everyone in Ordon has seen the ads and also loves to bring them up, proud as could be, but they also know it's a sure way to make Twi turn red and get too flustered to speak. Ilia might really, really like seeing those ads too.

That's all I have for now, but this much has been rotting my brain (as well as copious amounts of former rockstar Time content) for ages now and I just needed to get it out.

Time: was taught hylian by trees???? Almost has no tone/infliction in voice (he's working on it)

Malon: Tennessee accent all the way, with that nice hook at the end too (non southerners imagine dolly parton)

Lullaby: very formal proper hylian, dignitary style

Warriors: British military like he's reading from a manual

Sheik: I don't know much about her but the sheikah definitely take inspiration from Japan

Twilight: Appalachian accent as thick as raw honey (non appalachians have yall ever heard of one looking it up)

Midna: try 'n' convince me she don't have a loud ass Louisiana accent (non southerners go watch princess and the frog) (this is totally not for my Midna is African American agenda)

Dusk: real formal like n all that

Sky: That's a Midwesterner (he genuinely tried to get Wild and Rulie to eat jello salad once)

Sun: completely Midwestern

Groose: spends a lot of time around the other two^ but his parents are Gerudo (Arabic/middle eastern)

Four: the minish have always reminded me of the Icelandic tales of little elves

Dot: same formal accent, maybe more like Four's

Age/Cal(calamity): very formal british accent almost royal but also uses some Korean (Zora) words

Mipha: Korean accent (thicker than Sidon's)

Legend: Scottish accent, but he usually hides it really well, so you can't really tell at all unless he's mad or tired

Ravio: fairly normal, but if provoked, he will speak like an Italian mobster wife until he gets his way

Hyrule: Rulie is Irish or Welsh all the way (especially with half fae/fey Hyrule)
