Aspects in Astrology Explained - Part 1:
Major Aspects
Major aspects
The goal of studying astrology is to fully understand how the chart plays out on real life. Theory is useful in order to begin to see things through the lens of astrology but in order to understand how the chart is “lived” one has to observe people closely. This is a post on major aspects on how they show up in people. I have a post on minor aspects here.
Conjunctions (0° - 10° depending on the planets involved, the planets are sitting “next to each other in the chart) are “merged planets”.
The planetary energies are so close together that they’re acting as one unit. Multiple planets can be in conjunction which means that they become one. The native usually experiences the planets as inseparable, for better or for worse. The conjunction is often considered to be “a hard aspect” but it depends on the planets involved. Sun conjunct Moon is generally considered a positive thing because the person’s self-expression and emotional-instinctual nature are merged and don’t contradict each other. However, to have the core personality be merged with the emotions can also be very intense.
For example – a person with Venus conjunct Saturn would be cautious and defensive in love, not showing true feelings and blocking them from coming through. Expressing love would feel awkward, stupid and mechanical. Love would have to be developed slowly and steady. Social interaction could feel like work. On a more positive note, great self-control and masking of feelings could be beneficial in some situations – especially at work or in serious situations that require cold judgment.
Another example – a person with Sun conjunct Jupiter would be a person that has a jovial and fun-loving personality. There’s not much that keep these people stuck in a rut, they seek adventure and want to live life in a big way. Because of the optimism of Jupiter and the disregard for limits, this person would take chances and risks that no sane person would ever do.
Squares (90°) are forced and frustrated.
They are essentially forcing a relationship between two planets (energetic principals) that don’t have the same way of behaving and expressing. They are usually present in people who seem to contradict themselves a lot. They usually say things like “I’m not like that” when it’s obvious to people around them that they are. They can begin to doubt themselves and feel like they can’t get a grasp of their “true” selves. This causes discomfort and frustration to build.
For example – someone with Neptune in Scorpio square Venus in Aquarius will have a lot of strong and all-encompassing feelings that are intense. There are passionate feelings in this individual that are overflowing (Neptune in Scorpio) but they’re not well translated when expressing love and fondness. It doesn’t seem genuine because it’s forced and sometimes these passions are nowhere to be found – there’s only cool-headed conversation taking place (Venus in Aquarius).
Another example – someone with Jupiter in Gemini square Pluto in Virgo will have a lot to say, casually chatty and eager to talk to people, open minded and funny. Nothing is taken too seriously (Jupiter in Gemini) until the person begins to take serious offense for something that was said in good humor (Pluto in Virgo) – all of a sudden there are attempts to overpower the other person in the conversation, to force them to pay for or control their behavior, to “shut them down”. Later on, there’s little recollection of this behavior and a completely different planet that is activated.
I have found that it’s difficult to confront people with a lot of squares with certain behaviors because they have such different modes of being that they themselves have a hard time understanding. It’s not that these people are lying – it’s simply that from one planet’s perspective, the other one isn’t “right” or “true”. In other words, the planets disagree. When one is out, the other one is nowhere to be seen or hiding in the background waiting to come out.
Oppositions (180°) work similarly to squares in the sense that the planets don’t agree – they could be going in the same direction but have opposing ways of getting there.
There is usually more consciousness of the planets at either end of the spectrum then there is with the square. Sometimes the person is living out one side of the opposition and then another, although they represent completely different ways of being. “I’m like this at home and like this at work” is a common statement for people who have opposing planets in the 4th and 10th houses. Or “I’m like this in my neighborhood and like this when I’m out traveling” (opposition in the 3rd/9th houses). The trouble with oppositions is that it’s possible to live one and abandon the other/projecting it and attributing it to something “other” then the self.
For example – someone with Sun opposite Neptune might be prone to see how other people or external factors tend to lure the person away from the self with promises of glory and bliss that turns out to lead the person into unreality, into illusions of joy and happiness that ultimately ends up spiraling into addictive and destructive behavior.
Another example – someone with Sun opposite Jupiter might be prone to exaggerate and go overboard in attempts to get something out of life, to feel expansive and alive. Other people could be seen to hold the promise of greatness and the person might trust that everything is going to work out only to find that all the luck and rewards never really provided any real sense of optimism.
The thing to remember with oppositions is that the person has to live both planets but one won’t satisfy the other. The planets live different lives in the same person.
Trines (120°) are considered harmonious aspects. They don’t provide any friction, which can be either beneficial or detrimental depending on the planets involved.
The trines provide effortless flow – the planets aspecting each other approve of each other and work in a similar fashion. It’s easy to take the connection between the trining planets for granted because the connection feels like second nature. Because of the ease and flow, there’s a risk for laziness, of not being pushed to act out the planets. Squares demand some kind of release, which makes them very powerful – pressure is building and something has to give in. With trines the planets involved are positively boosting each other rather than forcing expression. They are powerful, but in a gentle way. They allow, rather than force.
For example – someone with Sun trine Saturn would find that working and pursuing worldly goals boost individuality, self-importance and pride. This is someone who would be comfortable with commitment and responsibility because there’s no sense of being pushed to work in a manner that is at odds with one’s self-expression.
Another example – someone with Venus trine Pluto would find that love is a passionate and powerful, but also of great consequence. There’s fear and risk involved but both planets support each other effortlessly simply by being true to their own mode of being. This is different from Venus square Pluto – there’s similarly great passion and power to these people’s love-nature but Venus loves in a way Pluto can’t assert its power in. It’s difficult to say which aspect could bring the most destruction in relationships. On the one hand, the trine provides no blockage for the energies; on the other the square is more forceful and frustrated. I would say that both bring destruction in different ways. A person with the trine aspect might not even notice it, it's so easy. A person with the square will notice it and be bothered by the feeling of it.
In people with the square you’re going to see “a switch” or “change of being”, a struggle taking place between two energy principals. In people with the trine, there is no struggle and no “switch”, the expression of love isn’t jerky or forced although it’s strong and forceful.
Sextiles (60°), like trines are considered harmonious aspects but they are a little bit more active.
The planets positively stimulate each other to activate, they “poke” each other a little bit – like they’re playfully teasing each other. When people feel like they “can’t help themselves” in a positive way, it’s usually a sextile that’s in the works. As stated with the trines, this can be beneficial or detrimental depending on the planets involved.
For example – someone with Saturn sextile Mars might be stimulated to concentrate more when taking action. Saturn could “poke” Mars to try a little bit more, to push a little bit further, to endure a little bit longer.
Another example – someone with Venus sextile Mars would be stimulated to go after the things that appeal to their taste. This is the aspect of “I just have to buy that thing I just spotted in the shop window” and “I just have to introduce myself to that good looking fellow”. These are silly examples, but you catch my drift.
Aspects
(Astrology terms)
Conjunction (Major aspect)
The conjunction - or 0 degrees - implies that the planets, whether transiting or natal, occupy approximately the same position in the chart. This is considered the strongest blend of energies represented by the two planets.
Opposition (Major aspect)
The opposition - or 180 degrees - reflects planets on opposite points of the Zodiac, or approximately 180 degrees apart. This is considered a dynamic, or difficult, aspect. The planetary energies are polarized; outer events stimulate their interaction; integration is the challenge.
Trine (Major aspect)
The trine - or 120 degrees - reflects planets in harmonious alignment with each other. This is considered flowing, or relatively easy to handle. The planetary energies flow smoothly; the connection is beneficial.
Square (Major aspect)
The square - or 90 degrees - is a considered a dynamic or difficult aspect. The planetary energies conflict; internal and creative tensions bring rich rewards through effort over time.
Sextile (Major aspect)
The sextile - or 60 degrees - represents one sixth of the circle, and is a flowing alignment. The planetary energies flow together, open into new possibilities, new connections.
Inconjunct (Minor aspect)
The Inconjunct of 150 degrees, which is also called a quincunx, represents an uneasy relationship between the planets. The planetary energies do not flow smoothly, one or the other predominates; discrimination must be employed.
Quintile (Minor aspect)
The quintile - of 72 degrees - or one fifth of the circle, is subtle, mystical and esoteric. The planetary energies are positively linked and spiritual in dimension.
Semi-sextile (Minor aspect)
The semi-sextile - or 30 degrees - is considered an uneasy alignment, another form of inconjunction. The planetary energies attract each other, require effort, allow entry of new information.
Semi-square (Minor aspect)
The semi-square - of 45 degrees - is a minor dynamic alignment. The planetary energies conflict in determined subtle tension; calmness is required.
Sesquiquadrate (Minor aspect)
The sesquiquadrate - or 135 degrees - is a minor dynamic alignment. The planetary energies conflict in determined subtle tension; control is required.
Bi-quintile (Minor aspect)
The bi-quintile - of 144 degrees - is double the quintile, or two fifths of the circle, and similar to the quintile is a minor flowing alignment. The planetary energies are positively linked, subtle, and spiritual in dimension.
Septile (Minor aspect)
The septile - of 51 degrees 25 minutes - representing one seventh of the circle, is a subtle and somewhat difficult alignment. The planetary energies darkly interact; incline to occult dimensions apart from socially accepted norms.

What are the aspects?
aspects are interactions between two or more planets. they are formed by specific angles that represent the relationships between the planets. the aspects can mean several things: they strengthen, collide or create harmony.
What are the meanings of the aspects?
major aspects:
🍃 sextile (60º) 🍃 harmony, luck, skills, opportunities, “fertile ground”, natural talents, agreement, sympathy.
✨ trine (120º) ✨ harmony, expansion, growth, potential, facilities, happiness.
😶 conjunction (0º) 😶 it depends, because it is a “neutral” aspect in which there can be the presence of harmony or disharmony. in some cases, there is an urge to work hard, but the reward is felt earlier; there may be disharmony, but more easily than in the aspects below.
😒 opposition (180º) 😒 tension, conflicts, difficulties, setbacks, restlessness, shocks, attraction-repulsion, repulsion.
💔 square (90º) 💔 tension, resistance, disharmony, stress, bad luck, intense work, escape, friction, dislike, insecurity, hidden weaknesses, blockages, crashes.
minor aspects:
🤔 semi-sextile (30º) 🤔 less harmonic than sextile, but it can still help you become more aware of your potential abilities.
😵 quincunx (150º) 😵 faults, unconscious tension, little awareness of problems and what needs to be developed, little conscious energy directed at it.
🔒 semi-square (45º) 🔒 irritation and stress, but less than one square causes
🌪 sesquiquadrate (135º) 🌪 conflict, aggravation, irritation.
Hello! Could you describe planetary aspects to the ascendant? Thank you!
Planetary Aspects to the Ascendant in Astrology
Conjunctions
Indicates a directness and openness to how one expresses themselves. A conjunction is a fusion/combination of energy, typically within 8 degrees of each other. As a result, this person will demonstrate powerful energy between their conscious self that is visible to the world [1st house= “I AM”] and whatever planet is working in tandem with the ascendant. If it’s the Sun, there will be sincerity and honestly appreciated by most. a direct expression of their most authentic self. This person may find it quite hard to be fake. If it is Pluto, there will be an intense emotional nature that many will be intimidated by, or said person will attract intense individuals. Lots of power here. Venus indicates irrefutable beauty [in one way or another]. The uncanny ability to charm others with grace and diplomacy as well.
Trines
to the ascendant equate general ease with self-expression between the planet working with the rising. Things will flow/come easier here. Trines are blessings, remember that. One with a trine to the rising will be aware of their creative talents and will feel an almost lazy confidence that they can succeed in almost anything they attempt. If it is the moon, the native gives off the impression to others that they’re in touch with, and in control of their personal needs and feelings. There is also a natural capability to empathize and understand other people’s trauma’s fears and emotions as a whole.
Sextiles
Like trines are harmonious and indicate a level of ease between two planets or points about 60 degrees apart. When a planet is sextiling the ascendant there is a laid back vibe here. If it’s Mercury, a native will have a penchant for absorbing information and knowledge. They’ll have the ability to explain ideas and modes of thought in a learned understandable way. Lots of reporters and Journalists have this aspect. They can make college-level reports understandable to a grade-schooler. If it’s Saturn the native will have the strength in controlling their impulses easier than others. The type to have an easier time with logic and pragmatism.
Squares
Aren’t as easy energetically as the two aforementioned aspects. Tension, obstacles, and challenges in a native’s life will be demonstrated by a square to the ascendant. It’s a 90° angle (8° orb or less) between two planets or points. As a result, a native with a square to the ascendant stimulates and influences motivation. If it’s Uranus for example, the native may have a restless and erratic temperament. They’ll insist on going their own way and doing their own thing no matter what. They refuse to be tied down to social norms. However, these demands for complete freedom from duty and responsibility will create inevitable conflicts in your relationships. Balance is required. If it’s Neptune, the native may be extremely sensitive to criticism, which can cause them to miss opportunities to advance themselves because shyness can set in. There is a fear of failure that can be an overall impediment to their drive [1st house/Mars]. They can daydream often, especially about their personal potential more than actively making moves to make them realities.
Oppositions
Are a hard aspect that indicates a need for balance. The energy creates this “push-pull”. 180 degrees apart, is known as a polarity/ polar opposites. Polar opposites either clash or mesh much like Taurus/Scorpio, Virgo/Pisces, or Gemini/Sagittarius. If the opposition to the ascendant is Mars, for example, can make a native somewhat aggressive in their general approach to others. They may be the types to pop-off on site. They may have a more dramatic reaction to real or perceived threats. There’s this readiness to jump down another’s throat at the slightest provocation. One must be careful not to make enemies because of their warlike reactions. One could be perceived as having a chip on their shoulder which will repel others instead of attracting them. If it’s Jupiter, one can struggle having faith in themselves. They may look to outside sources/people to fill that void. They need to be careful having expecting too much from others and find that self-love within instead of looking to find it elsewhere.
Honorable Mentions
Quintiles/Biquintiles
Quintiles [72 degrees] and bi-quintiles [144 degrees] point to talent, the desire to create order and to categorize, a fascination with patterns and structures, obsessive-compulsive perfectionist tendencies, and the desire to build or make things. When one has one of these aspects between a planet/[point to their ascendant they can express the energy above in the way they carry themselves to the world. If it’s Jupiter to the ascendant the person may work very hard to be known worldwide. They’ll be meticulous when it comes to their higher thinking.
Sesquiquadrates
Sesquiquadrate is 135 degrees. It creates tension and challenge to work and learn about. It’s that smoldering conflict one would prefer to ignore but nowhere near as intense as its major counterpart, the square mentioned above. So if it’s the moon sesquiquadrate the Ascendant, one may have a lot of trouble expressing their emotions. They will either wear their heart on their sleeve which can cause others to think they’re too sensitive or they may refuse to show emotion for fear that others may perceive them as “weak”.
Quincunxes
Or inconjunctions equate to five signs apart and numerically, 150 degrees apart. There is tension, discord, and awkwardness here. If it’s Venus quincunx the Ascendant, one can have a hard time feeling secure with their looks. They may want to express themselves one way but their venus wants to express itself another. A quincunx indicates two planets or points having opposite goals.
Aspect series - Intro
What is an astrological aspect?
It all comes down to geometry. The zodiac spreads along a circle, encompassing 360°. Each planet - be it in a natal chart or transit - sits at a specific degree of that circle. Aspects show us how these planets (and points) in the given chart interact. The distance between them (in degrees) defines the kind of dynamic they have with each other. The aspect is the angle these planetary bodies have between them.
Let’s break it down through an example.
The first degree of neighbouring fixed signs are exactly 90° apart, since they divide the circle into 4 equal sections. If drawn, it is a square inside the circle, and thus the aspect’s name: square.
Let’s focus on the Sun and the Moon. They are both in early degrees of fixed signs, so they form a square.
But because the Sun is at 7° Scorpio and the Moon is at 10° Aquarius, whis square is with an orb of 3°. An orb is the the distance in degrees of an aspect from being exact. Therefore, the square between Venus and Moon in this chart, is more exact, closer.
The closer an aspect to be exact, the stronger it is, the more influence it has. According to Cafeastrology, the closeness of the orb also defines how conscious the aspect is: closer aspects are more unconscious, while wider aspects are more noticable for the chart holder. This is a pattern I also observed myself.
How aspects are grouped?
There are major aspects that divide the circle into whole, rounded number of degrees (like 90°), giving us a well-known geometric shape (like the square). Minor aspects are derived from major aspects, or they don’t quite cut the 360° into exact divisions. Both major and minor aspects are divided into harmonious and challenging aspects.
Harmonious major aspects:
sextile ⚹
trine △
Challenging major aspects:
square □
opposition ☍
The conjunction ☌ is a major aspect that can be both harmonious and challenging.
Minor aspects are: quincunx (inconjunct), semi-sextile, quintile, biquintile, septile, semi-square, novile
[Each aspect will have it’s own post in the following weeks, so stay tuned! ⭐]
