detailed french study method

this is centered around the 625 most common french words, but you could implement this same system with any vocabulary count and theme.

as you know well by now, french has been a struggle for me, because I could never seem to retain the information I needed to, and grasping for words while communicating with others was far too dull. 

towards the end of january this year, I wondered if starting back at the beginning might be most beneficial for me, so i grabbed a 625 common words list from Fluent Forever and got to work.

all I did was copy that list into a spreadsheet...

...and add an extra column for each row so that I could have the french translations beside the english words.

that was the easy part!

instead of writing out the words vertically, I went row by row, so that ended up being a review of eight words per day. wordreference was always open in an adjacent tab while filling out these rows:

words were highlighted if I ended up having to search the dictionary for their definition. this was also a helpful way to keep track of the words that I would use in my writing a bit later.

because I’d already studied french before [on and off for five years prior], most of the words were not highlighted, but if this would be your first time going through french, you wouldn’t need to highlight!

after highlighting a row, I got my notebook and pen ready. I set the minimum word count at 50 words [give or take once I started to get into a rhythm]. then, i wrote out the words that i didn’t retain [like before, if this is your first time, then just write out all eight words!]. these words would be the content for my short story/blurb/clip:

the words for this first day here were l’argile, la maladie, l’image, and le nez ! for l’ words, definitely put their gender so that you can remember!

feel free to keep wordreference open as you write. those words that I have underlined within my mini composition are additional vocab that i had to look up. in this way, you may end up learning 12-15 words a day over just 8! I also searched for conjunctions and tenses and whatnot, stretch out to grammar if you want.

every seven days, you should be completing 7 rows of words. that’s a minimum of 56 words a week. plus, you’ll start to use the same vocabulary over and over, and that helps further reinforce your learning. you don’t necessary have to do this every day, just know that by the end of the week, 7 rows filled is your goal!

with 625 words, this took me 10 weeks to complete with steady progress. that was a really good pace for me, enough to be able to retain my newly-reviewed words, and also feel comfortable navigating new vocab and grammar structures. 

this took me anywhere from 15-30 minutes a day to complete, so just a bit of time each day can really pay off! if you have questions, shoot me an ask!
