🔵 3 Ns of Justification ▫️ Eating animals is made possible in part by the “3 Ns of Justification,” myths that teach us to believe that eating animals is normal, natural, and necessary. ▫️ The 3 Ns as they relate to the justification of eating animals: ▫️ ◾Normal. As in, it’s normal to eat animals because everyone does it. Eating animals is entwined in our society to the point that it is simply second nature. It is abnormal NOT to eat animals, or to question the practice of carnism. ▫️ ◾Natural. As in, animals are here for us to eat, for human survival. It is a practice rooted in natural history. Man has been hunting and killing animals for millions of years, and man is naturally at the top of the food chain. Eating animals is what we (humans) were meant to do. ▫️ ◾Necessary. As in, animal products are imperative for proper growth, nutrition, and physiological function. Protein, calcium, iron. Strong bones. Big muscles. Rawr. ▫️ Not surprisingly, these myths have been used to justify other violent practices, such as male dominance and heterosexual supremacy. ▫️ Growing up, we are given dead animals for food, and most times, we're not even aware that what's on the plate, was once alive. Carnism operates outside of our awareness, depriving us of free choice. ▫️ "We don't see meat-eating as we do vegetarianism – as a choice, based on a set of assumptions about animals, our world, and ourselves," says vegan psychologist Dr. Melanie Joy. ▫️ "Rather, we see it as a given, the 'natural' thing to do, the way things have always been and the way things will always be. We eat animals without thinking about what we are doing and why." ▫️ Animals have been categorized into food and companion animals. We eat pigs, but not dogs; cows, but not cats - the line has been drawn by what seems to be an arbitrary system. ▫️ Beings are classified into edible, inedible, pets, predators, and entertainment animals - all subject to cultural variability. ▫️ Credit: ➡ @beyondcarnism ▫️ #meat #carnism #carnism #MelanieJoy #psychology #vegan #activism #health #life #bethechange #plantbased #govegan #maketheconnection #veganisthefuture #respectlife #animals #LiveandletLive #Animalrights https://www.instagram.com/p/BsyN-Tyg_qM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=l6zvzsuibni2
