A blast from the past, hehehe, inspired by She's so Nice by Pink Guy.
Masterlist
Dean knew.
From the second year on the team, he knew something about you was, if not familiar, an eerie blur from his past. But for some odd reason, he never knew why. You were nothing like what he had come from before.
Introduced to him and the rest of the locker room as the new backstage coordinator, you were all put together in a slim-fitting two-piece suit you definitely filled out, hair always tamed and pulled back to a puff at the apex of your neck. You spoke with an expansive vocabulary and a slight twang he would find himself swooning for. You never said more than what was needed in the moment and always went home on the hour work ended. You didn't join an office party; you even told Alexa no for a welcome party. No one from his past would have passed that up, well, all the girls he knew then.
It's not that you were standoffish, no, not at all. In fact, around Dean, you were visible… skittish. Drawing your shoulders up as tension built up into them when you happened to see him watching you. Voice a lot smaller and slightly shaking when you had to tell him to go stand over there and do this. You were like a mare that was in the forest alone for too long; only Dean saw himself as the wicked wood that scared you shitless. It frustrated him a lot more than he wanted to admit, especially because he couldn't shake the feeling he knew you from a time before.
Not only that, but the men's locker room was basically infatuated with you, raving about how cute and fun you were. How you laughed was like a roar of happiness, and how talkative you were about the work they did in the squared circle. On and on, they would rave, even making jokes about how they would confess their undying love for you. All this Dean had to listen to and endure. What was it about you that seemed so familiar, and was that what made you so afraid of him?
Months passed of wondering. That day, he was close to giving up. Never wondering again, content to live with the gnawing feeling at the back of his head screaming he knew you. He was content until a script fell on the desk a few metres off in front of him as he waited, and you bent over to pick it up. Content until he saw how, when you bent forward, the white blouse you wore drew up. High enough to see it, see it again, the beautifully placed tattoo.
The big scratchy-looking “X” just on the small of your back.
When he saw it all, the memories came back, memories of you, nappy hair straightened cascading along the blades of your back as Mox kept a bruising grip at your midsection. The one he would let his bloodied knuckles caress to calm you down when you were screaming his name, face deep in his pillows, inhaling the scent of him. The one that belonged to the woman with the butterfly on her stream. The butterfly he would kiss as you rode him, making a rhythm that would wake up his Sami in the next room. The butterfly tattoo he would kiss right before he’d go all the way down and eat your pussy to an inch of his life. Plush thighs closing against the reddened ears and bruised cheeks. All that was all you. The girl screamed her lungs out at all his matches, stayed with him in the CZ warehouse and even took him out to dance.
Then, as soon as he saw it, it was gone. Back under your blouse, Dean was just a starting mess of flushed and aroused. Seth, who had just arrived, looked at Dean and bumped him softly. “You good, man?”
Me: reading an absolute masterpiece of a fanfic. Licking my fingers before I scroll. Actively jumping in shock, grasping my head every time a plot twist happens. A tear rolls down my face as I gasp at how touching the whole story is.
The devious untagged smut scene awaiting my arrival in the next chapter (unskippable cutscene, that will be heavily referenced and taking over the entirety of the story)

Timing was never going to work out well in Aki’s favor. He knew that much once he started working for Public Safety. He was never going to live the long and fulfilling life that he had once dreamed of in his youth. He was going to die soon.
Aki would never allow himself to open up to anybody due to this, he didn’t want to form a connection just to be pulled away from it at the drop of a pin. There was still yearning in his chest anytime he saw happy couples walking down busy roads, giggling amongst themselves as they held hands, navigating their way through the city with one another.
He simply just chose to believe that he would live out the rest of his days in the same pattern that he had grown accustomed to. Wake up, sit on his balcony with a nice warm cup of coffee and a cigarette placed neatly between his fingers before going inside to wrangle Denji and Power to the best of his abilities.
He still remembers when you had just recently joined Public Safety, being left in his hands in order to show you how things were done. He had brought a complaint forward to Makima, questioning on why he always got stuck with the new members, but she quickly shut him down by simply saying that he was the only one who could do the job right.
He knew better than to argue with Makima, so there he was, walking down a busy street with you trailing behind him after finishing up for the day. He’d be lying if he tried to say that he wasn’t drawn to you as soon as his eyes fell upon you. Everything from the way your eyes met his, full of confidence, all the way down to your stance, not slouched or showing any sort of apprehension as he addressed you for the first time.
You were pestering him with questions the entire journey, ranging from basic questions to try and get to know the quiet man, all the way to how he started working for Public Safety. Aki gave nothing more than quick, small answers to your questions, much to your dismay.
He did feel bad at his lack of answers, turning around and noticing that your energy had died down, your incessant questions coming to an end as you fell into silence, not wanting to bother him anymore. Aki paused, turning to face you as you nearly smashed into him, too lost in your head to notice that he had stopped. “You alright” he asked you, his tone flat as always as he looked you up and down.
“I’m fine,” you mumbled, stepping back from him and looking down at your feet, embarrassed with the fact that you were letting something as trivial as this get you down.
Aki let out a sigh, causing you to raise your head and look at him. “C’mon. I know you wanna talk, we can go back to my apartment in order to do so. Denji and Power will be out for the night so they won’t bother us.”
You simply nodded your head, following behind him as he led you to his apartment.
That was nearly three months ago, now. As hard as he tried to keep himself as closed off as possible towards you, he would always falter. The way you would look at him wide eyed and attentive anytime he spoke, giving you few details of his life made him feel as if he could spill his whole life story to you.
He didn’t know how simple conversations taking place late into the night over coffee growing cold and cigarettes burning led to you straddling his lap, your lips locked with his as small whimpers left your mouth.
Aki always swore that he wouldn’t open up to anybody, oh but how you molded perfectly against him while you were under him, body writhing as he slowly fucked into you, soft whispers of praise being muttered into your ear as he coaxed you towards another orgasm.
The usually stoic man was absolutely smitten with you, waking up to the smell of breakfast wafting into his room from the kitchen in the mornings after you’d spent the night. The way you were always able to get Denji and Power to calm down enough to act like regular people for once.
You were the light that was shining in the shadow of his short life. Going through the motions of domestic bliss with you before heading off to work, you helping him out with chores around his apartment. You rarely left his side, causing everybody that you both knew to shoot small glances, most surprised that he had actually let someone through his cold demeanor.
The day he told you that he wasn’t going to live much longer was a solemn day for you both. Aki fully expected you to take in the news and decide that you didn’t want to be with him anymore, not wanting to be with someone who couldn’t give you the life you deserved.
Oh was he surprised when you pulled him into his arms after you told him, whispering sweet words to him as he allowed himself to cry for the first time in years. He remembers you running your hands through his hair as you promised him that you would be with him till the end, the knowledge of his early death not changing how you felt about him.
He helped you as much as you helped him. Whenever you had a rough day at work, he was always there to massage away the pain and run you a hot bath, joining you and scrubbing off all of the dirt and blood, gentle traces of his fingers against your spine when he was done, trying to get you to relax further.
When he would carry you to bed after those baths, wrapping you up in his blankets before laying next to you, wordlessly pulling you into his arms, hugging you as close to his body as he possibly could. He never wanted to let you go.
Aki remembers the first time you told him that you loved him. The two of you were laying in bed after having another long talk on his balcony, your head on his chest as he ran his fingers through your hair, something he did often after you let it slip that you loved the feeling.
You had raised your head, the movement causing him to look down at you. He could see it in your eyes before you even told him, he felt his heart burst as soon as you murmured the words I love you. He pulled you in closer, pressing a soft kiss to your lips before telling you that he loved you too.
The time you had spent with Aki was short, but it was so sweet. You found yourself at his gravestone every year on the anniversary of his death, a pack of his favorite cigarettes and a bouquet of his favorite flowers in your hand.
You’d sit there for hours, talking to his grave, a lit cigarette in hand as you told him everything new that was going on in your life.
You never did take on another lover, despite Aki telling you to go find yourself a new happiness once he was gone. He wanted nothing more than you to move on, to find someone who could shower you with the love you deserved until your last day on Earth.
The time you spent with Aki was short, but you knew in your heart that nobody could compare to him. The two of you were simply out of time, but you would never regret your time with him, nor would you ever try and seek out someone new.
You were the love of Aki’s life, and he was the love of yours.

You had joined the team nearly a year ago and you’d been having the time of your life- or afterlife- ever since. You loved the team, Three made you laugh, two trained you in the gym, five and Seven were like siblings to you, One was like your grumpy yet funny uncle and Four… Four and you had a bit of a complicated relationship. He always seemed a bit distant, you’d see him laughing or chatting animatedly with some of the others and when you’d walk into the room he’d shut down or blatantly ignore you.
You two did have some good times, more than once you’d found him in the kitchen in the middle of the night with a beer and a snack (which incidentally was why you were there as well) and you guys would joke, laugh, tease and just generally have a grand time and then you’d end up bent over the kitchen counter while he slammed into you or with one of you on your knees making the other see stars. but the next day he’d be harsh, dismissive, or in full avoidance mode. You didn't expect him to be different or gentler with you as the sex was never romantic, it was always rough (and mindblowing), you didn't expect a fucking proposal or anything but his hostility irritated you, it made you so angry, but mostly, it just made you so fucking sad and you weren’t quite sure why.
You had no reason to be sad, you had no reason to be hurt by his actions you told yourself repeatedly but... he was so charming and funny and endearing, and that first kiss… you swore it started soft and sweet before it turned rough and sloppy but maybe you just imagined it. Maybe you just wanted to believe he was able to be soft and vulnerable. Either way, you had no reason to be sad so why was there a lump in your throat every time you thought about him?
So you would push down the sadness and act on your anger. You would avoid him harder than he was avoiding you, you would shoot him quick dirty looks and glares when you had to be in a room together and you’d work out harder than you usually did until you’d ultimately end up, once again cuming around his dick while he said the filthiest things in your ear. After the most recent night in the kitchen and Four hadn’t avoided you he just glared and pretend you weren’t there which was almost worse.
Now you were in the gym, beating the shit out of a punching bag, brows furrowed as you fumed about Four. you’d been there what must’ve been about an hour when the door opened and Four walked in. He froze for a moment in the doorway when he saw you, then continued to the other side of the room where he set his things down and wrapped his hands. Then he walked over to the bag next to yours and started punching. This made you angrier. You started punching and kicking the bag harder and harder until you exploded
“What the hell is wrong with you?” you yelled at him “genuinely what the fuck is wrong with you? Your distant, you’re nice, you fuck me, you hate me, you fuck me, you hate me, we get along, we fuck, you hate me! It’s the same fucking thing over and over again! And it’s fucking exhausting!”
Four had at this point, stopped boxing and was staring at you with a look you couldn't place.
“I don't know if you’re worried I’ll get attached if you’re nice to me after we fuck” you were no longer yelling but your voice was still harsh “or maybe you genuinely hate me and you’re only pretending to be nice to me so you can get laid” but even as you said it you knew that wasn’t the truth, you knew he was better than that “and after you’ve gotten what you wanted you can’t pretend any more but... this shit is exhausting” you tone had shifted again. The shouting had turned to a general accusatory harshness which had turned to a quiet voice cracked with emotion. “...I’m just so tired” and with that you turned and left, leaving the few things you’d brought down with you as Four just stood there, frozen.
You made your way to your room and took a shower, all the while willing yourself not to cry because, as you told yourself, you were angry, not sad. So there’s no reason to cry… right? After your shower, you immediately got into bed, wet hair and all, where you just stared numbly until you dozed off.
You were woken a few hours later, by the sound of your door being opened. You rubbed your eyes and sat up to see four standing in your doorway, his figure lightly illuminated by the lights in the hall.
“What do you want?” you asked wearily
He opened his mouth a few times as tho trying to figure out what to say but nothing came out.
You were watching closely trying to read his expression but you count even begin to know what he was thinking or feeling.
“Four?” you pushed
Still nothing.
“Billy?” you prodded quietly “what are you doing here?”
He said nothing. He just looked at you with such intensity but you still couldn't put your finger on what was going on in his head.
“Billy, Why are you looking at me like that?”
A a long beat of silence and then:
“Could you ever be happy with me?”
“What? I-” but you stopped at the look on his face. It had shifted ever so slightly and now it was as if you could read every thought and every emotion and it made the numbness you had forced yourself to feel fade away. It made you want to cry. You’d never seen him look this vulnerable. His eyes were wide and sad and scared, his lips were trembling slightly and his body language was hunched and fidgety. Memories of your first kiss, of the laughter and bonding you’d experienced with him all those nights in the kitchen, of the sex, swirled in your brain as you sat in your bed then, You stood, reached out, took his hand in yours and pulled him to you, engulfing him in a tight embrace. He was stiff in your arms unsure of what to do but desperate to give in and melt into your touch.
“Of course I could be. I would be” you said softly your lips just barely brushing his skin as you spoke and Billy finally gave in. His arms clutched you closer and you could feel him let out a big breath that neither of you had noticed he was holding.
“Then why aren’t we together?” he whispered into your shoulder, his voice cracking slightly “why did I push you away?”
That knocked the wind out of you. You opened your mouth to speak but nothing came out. Why did he sound so broken? Why did that question shatter your heart into a million little pieces? A tear finally slipped down your cheek.
“I-” you started “I don't know”
Billy pulled his face from your neck and looked into your eyes. One of his hands shifted to cradle your head and after a moment of silence he asked “can I kiss you?” he’d said it so quietly you could barely hear it. It was as tho he didn't want you to, as though he feared you’d say no or laugh in his face if you heard him. But you just nodded
His head dipped to meet yours in what was the most melancholy kiss either of you had ever experienced. Your arms shifted around his neck and his hands drifted to your waist as the kiss deepened. Both you and he were lost in each other, from the minute your lips met. When you broke apart his forehead rested on yours and you both just stood there in silence, both afraid to ruin the moment and neither sure of what to say or do next. This was completely uncharted territory for you both. After a while, you gave him a quick sweet kiss, pulled out of his arms, climbed back into bed, and looked at him expectantly.
“Well?” you asked
“Well… what?”
“You coming?”
“what?” he was so unsure of himself within this moment that nothing was making sense.
You rolled your eyed at his cluelessness and reached out to him with grabby hands
“Oh.. yeah” he climbed into bed with you and You both fidgeted and shifted until you were comfortable in each others arms.
After a few minutes of silence, you said “Billy?”
He hummed in response
“If you ever treat me like that, if you ever hurt me like that again, I’m gone”
He placed a kiss on your forehead and said “as you should be”

Bucky wasn't gonna lie. He was jealous of how easy this century was for Steve. For someone that was a fish out of water in the land of relics like big band music and being able to call every girl you met "sweetheart," he was surprisingly adept in the land of smartphones and self-checkouts.
Steve waded into this new century with gusto and Bucky? His favorite thing was that self-checkouts meant he didn't have to talk to as many people at the grocery store. That was nice. That was really nice. And there were more food options, and that was neat. The microwaves were cool. There were some good things. But as he leaned against the wall of the club, nursing a drink that wouldn't get him drunk and watching Steve try and carry on a conversation with Thor over all the women that wouldn't leave them alone; he couldn't help but be a little jealous.
It was a pain in the ass, trying to remember how to flirt with a girl. Girls in this time were different, well. Kinda. Girls had always been feral. Fierce. But now they got to burn brighter. Smart girls weren't doomed to spinsterhood and cats. Still. The music was loud. Too loud for talking and the skin and the sweat on the dancefloor were prohibitive. It felt like too much. Like he couldn't touch because the skin that was showing was something he shouldn't be seeing until at least a third date. It just isn't his scene. And he knows it isn't really Steve's either, but he's having a pretty good time right now with a pretty blonde who's got pretty red lips. So, deciding to quit while he's behind, Bucky slips into the night.
The cold February air reminds him of Russia, but it feels good against the heat in his face. It was hot in the Club. All those bodies smashed together. The smell of sweat and sexual frustration. It was Alien terrain. But even in this time, the Alleys in New York hadn't changed that much. The smell was the same. Trash, Asphalt, Iron. That never changed. Neither did his urge to go home.
To go be where he's comfortable. Where he can wear a t-shirt and sweats. Where he can have a snack and listen to a record. Or maybe watch Television for a minute. TV was another thing he enjoyed. It made good background noise while he did other things. So when he let himself into the apartment he shared with Steve, he switched it on.
It didn't matter what played as Bucky stripped himself out of his clothes and picked up something more comfortable. All that mattered was that he felt better. A lot better, away from the crush of bodies and stares. He feels better still when he grabs a snack. Oreos and a glass of milk. Something sweet is usually his go-to when he's feeling particularly out of place. And he waits. Steve always comes home eventually. Neither one of them is really looking for a girl right now. Fitting one into their lives has been frustrating. And it's been even more frustrating trying to find one that can love them both. Or at least doesn't mind them loving each other while one of them loves you.
When Steve walks into the house, Bucky looks towards the door, "It's not even midnight yet," he said yawning.
"Eh, I was afraid all the cabs were gonna turn into pumpkins if I stayed out too late," he said, throwing his jacket on the chair and sprawling on the couch, his head on Bucky's abs with a sigh.
"Have fun?" Bucky asked, rubbing the nape of his neck gently.
"Not really," he admitted, "but there was a girl that was interested in a date."
"If it was the little blonde, no thanks," Bucky said fondly.
"I turned her down," Steve said, yawning, "She mentioned having a true-crime podcast."
"What the fuck is a podcast?" Bucky asked.
"It's like a youtube video but... not. It's like a radio program."
Bucky nodded and sighed, "Still. I don't wanna be a project."
Steve nuzzled against Buckys stomach and smiled, "Don't worry, Buck. I won't let that happen. Not again. We're gonna find a girl eventually, and she's gonna be everything we want."
"That's the dream, Stevie," he answers, rubbing Steve's neck.
"Let's go to bed, huh?" Steve asked, "Things'll look brighter in the morning."
"You always say that," Bucky grouses.
"And I'm always right," Steve says, grinning, "Come on, Barnes. The sooner you let me put you to bed, the sooner I'll be able to buy your pancakes in the morning."
"That helps," Bucky said, letting Steve pull him into a sitting position.
"It always has," Steve said, stealing a kiss gently, looping an arm around Bucky's waist.
The brunette leans into the touch, and Steve frowns to himself. He knows Bucky is down. That he feels left out and gets lonely. He's been there. This time can be overwhelming. It's a constant influx of information and ads and new cultural mores. It never stops. And it takes some getting used to. Still. As he strips down to his boxers and a t-shirt, Bucky’s head on his chest, he wouldn’t trade it for anything.
He knows how badly Bucky misses having a softer touch in their lives. A feminine sweetness. Counterbalance to their existence of endless fighting and training. The blood and the gore. Someone who can weave their lives together so seamlessly that all the throw pillows and hair care products seem like they’ve been there forever. Steve tries to bring home flowers some times and do the rainy, sleepy Sundays. But the problem is that neither one of them does well with downtime. Not really. Not if they don’t need to slow down for someone else. It’s always been that way. Even when they had their first girl together.
Dates with just the two of them are adventures. Riding the new terrifying ride at Coney Island. Adrenaline inducing things. Things that left them both breathless and dizzy like the first frantic time together.
They wanted someone that brought more balance. Someone that reminded them of what they were fighting for. It was easy for them to get wrapped up in each other and lose sight of anything else. And he wants that for Bucky. Something to help him find a footing in his new routine. But, even Steve knows it’s going to be a tall order.
It was a tall order even before he went into the ice. But now, with their combined history, it was going to be worse. But there had to be someone. Someone they could fold into their lives and keep for their own.
“Go to sleep,” Bucky groused, nipping his shoulder.
“You first, Bucky,” Steve snorted, turning his head to brush a kiss against his hair.
