Diversity is something that I have always found beautiful and necessary in the world. In my short 21 years on this planet I have already met people from so many different cultures and backgrounds. Whether being a traveller to their country or meeting someone who is visiting mine, it always thrills me to meet others who are different from me in any way. It widens my perspective, and reminds me that the world is so big and there are so many things left to discover.
Berlin is home to people from all over the world, and there is a lot of culture packed in here. It’s like one huge multi-kulti crockpot filled with flavors from all over the world, but - just as in America - these flavors don’t always necessarily meld together easily. Misunderstandings, language barriers, or even at times a lack of cultural sensitivity can lead to frustration for anyone who is or feels themselves an “outsider”. During my time in Berlin I have witnessed these frustrations and sometimes even experienced them, but I have also seen how all these cultures can come together to make Berlin one of a kind.
I was walking through the train station and saw a man on his phone who looked very confused. He was trying to talk to someone in English, but he seemed to be having communication issues. I had a feeling that he really needed help and I - somewhat impulsively - said “Do you need help?” From what I have observed and read, stopping and helping a stranger is a rare occurrence in the city, but I am no city-girl and it was just my instinct to ask.
He said “You speak English?”
"Yes"
"You can Dutch too?" he said with a smile.
"Yes." I assumed that he meant "deutsch", which is German for "German".
The next thing I know, he gave me his phone, and I started translating back-and-forth with him and the man on the other end. It turns out the problem was that the man on the other end could not speak English, and he happened to be selling his car to this guy who cannot speak German. They needed to meet somewhere, but they could not communicate enough to work out where to meet. The man on the phone told me to tell the man at the station to wait in front of McDonald’s. The man at the station was really grateful for the help, and could not stop saying thanks.
It seemed as though he is a recent immigrant from another country, and trying desperately to adapt to not only the new culture, but the new language as well. I could not imagine how difficult it would be to have to adjust to that extent. Meeting the man at the station really put my experiences as a foreigner in Germany into perspective, and reminded me of how lucky I am to be a native English speaker as well as someone who had the opportunity to learn a second language well. While the encounter reminded me of how privileged I am, it also reminded me that I should use what I have learned through my privileged life to help others whenever I can.
