“50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon” - 1969: Batgirl’s Bag of Tricks!: After her debut in Detective Comics 359 in 1967, Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl was requested by readers to see more of this young Gotham City civilian. In Detective Comics 384 from February 1969, Batgirl had a regular spot in the publication along with Robin the Boy Wonder. One such tale comes in two parts, beginning in Detective Comics 388 from June 1969 titled ‘Surprise! This’ll Kill You!’, written by Frank Robbins and illustrated by Gil Lane and Murphy Anderson. When Barbara answers an ad for a roommate, she meets stewardess Darlene Daweson. Darlene already asks Barbara for a favor - to dress up as Batgirl (in the costume Darlene made) and attend a masquerade ball in place of her so Darlene can visit her sick grandfather. Babs agrees and is told her escort will meet her at 9pm. Opening the door, Batgirl meets her date - Batman! - or someone dressed as the Caped Crusader for the costume party. Things get violent when “Batman” tries to kill Batgirl (thinking it’s Darlene) and the two fight (top right panel) until “Batman” steals her purse and runs off. Batgirl tracks him down to the party where the rest of the costumed hero crooks, Superman, Green Lantern and The Flash, are there. The issue ends with Babs taking on these fake Justice League members and continues in July 1969’s Detective Comics 389 titled ‘Batgirl’s Bag of Tricks!’, written by Robbins and illustrated by Kane and Anderson. After Batgirl knocks out the criminals dressed as Justice League of America crash a masquerade charity ball to take all the precious jewels, she discovers Darlene double crossed her JLA companions and tried to frame Barbara for the theft. Batgirl gets hot on her tail and tracks her down to a place called Cosby Corners where Darlene meets her crime lord grandfather. Little do they all know, “Superman” followed them there and plans to seek revenge on Darlene, until her father shoots him dead. Batgirl then fights the two crooks in hand to hand combat, apprehends them and sends them to the authorities. ✌🏼️💛💜📖🎨🎉
