NAIDOC is a time to celebrate Blak excellence, our cultures, arts, histories, power, victories, achievements, survival and our futures. And so, every day this week I'm going to share a couple of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music videos, short films, documentaries, etc. to hopefully help point a spotlight on some wonderful artists and creatives in this time of celebration ♥️💛🖤

To kick it off, check out Our Greats by 3%. This track not only slaps, but also celebrates the next generations and our old ones, the giants one whose shoulders we stand!

And watch BAMA - a short film by Jahvis Loveday. Jahvis reflects on his first day at a private school in the big city, his fears of losing his connections to his family, community, and culture, and his resolve to maintains his connections and his identity even when living so far from his country.

i don't know any Blackfella video essayists BUT i follow a few deadly Blak creators who post longer form videos on tiktok so i'll give them a shout here - (if you don't have tiktok i think they're all on insta too)

It’s NAIDOC Week in Australia, a week acknowledging and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture.

If you’d like to learn a bit about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander queer history, we’ve put together a few links to get you started.

Peopling the Empty Mirror: The Prospects for Lesbian and Gay Aboriginal History by the Gays and Lesbians Aboriginal Alliance (1994) - an essay reviewing literature on Aboriginal sexuality, and discussing future of Aboriginal queer history

ATSI Rainbow Archive curated by Andrew Farrell - an online archive active from 2014 to 2021, cataloguing links from across the internet referencing queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences.

What do we know about queer Indigenous history? by James Findley (2018) - an article in which Findley speaks to queer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people about their understandings and experiences of queer Indigenous history.

Colouring the Rainbow: Blak Queer and Trans Perspectives edited by Dino Hodge (2015) - an anthology of essays and personal stories by twenty-two First Nations people exploring identity, culture and queerness.

Latest upgrade to Australia, 4 new species of sand dragon given names by the Traditional Owners of the area:

tjakalpa -  the indigenous name for the Great Victoria Desert, where the lizard lives

ibiri -  means "small lizard" in the Barngarla language, and are found in parts of the Eyre Peninsula

kartiwarru -  the Dieri term for red-backed lizard and is found in the Strzelecki Desert.

tuniluki  - "sand lizard" in Ngarrindjerin, with that lizard found in the mallee along the River Murray.
