When people try to raise the age of majority they’re doing so because they understand that children lack power in society and they’re trying to increase how many lack power and increase the concentration of power.

If someone tells you that 25 is the start of adulthood they’re saying that they think that too many people have autonomy, choice, and freedom and they want to take that away from them.

If someone tells you that neurodivergence means you stay a child longer than neurotypicals they’re telling you that they think that more neurotypicals deserve autonomy, choice, and liberty than neurodivergents.

When someone says these things, listen to them and understand it as the horrifying statement that it is.

I've made a simpler, more popular post about this before, but I feel like a lot of the time, people who "never saw any signs" of their friend/family member/co-worker/etc being a system did see signs, they just mistook them as something else – usually, as something being wrong. Because for the majority of singlets, someone's personality changing is often associated with that person going through tough times, or something major happening in their life, or just them being under stress of some sort, so they ask if that person is okay. But for systems (for whom personality changes are normal), this question can come off as odd or as coming out of the blue, since there's nothing wrong or major going on in their life. Sometimes, it can even come across as rude, like an insult to one's personality and self being "wrong" just because it's different.

This is part of why I think discussions and ideas about the "covertness" and "overtness" of systems are often flawed, especially on the medical side of things; most systems are considered covert, but it's also very common for systems to have experiences (even before awareness of their system) like what I described above, where they're not being "covert" at all – those involved just didn't know what they were looking at. I'd even say this especially goes for when it's the system's own awareness of their plurality, as systems often have and notice many signs prior to their "official discovery" of their own system – such as voice hearing (internal communication, in system terms), feeling as though they are talking to someone else when supposedly thinking or talking to only themself, and even tracking their own "mood changes" or "phases" (headmates and switching) – they just cannot put the right name to it due to lack of awareness of plurality, not a lack of self-awareness (as one might think when they hear most systems are covert). When a lot of the "covertness" of a system can easily come from unaware and uneducated (as in, with little to no knowledge of systems, as most are) people simply misinterpreting overt symptoms, the dichotomy of covert and overt requires reexamination.

Or at least, that's the conclusion I draw. Idk. Maybe I've been misinterpreting what covert/overt mean for this one, but I still think neuronormativity plays a part in how "noticeable" a system is considered, which does make talking about it with simple terms like these a little complicated.

Hey sociology/fandom history Tumblr can I ask for book/paper recs?

After multiple years of being pushed out of fandom spaces by White Woman Fandom Elders for being Too Autistic, I want to explore how the white millennial/gen x womanhood of fandom is intertwined with ableism, transphobia/cisnormativity, and ageism to make sense of my experience. Obviously there's probably not one book or paper that covers this and I know a lot of the literature is centered on antiblackness and misogynoir, but do y'all know of any sources that could shed light on this? Would super appreciate it.

Accidentally reminded myself of this "Good Listener" bullshit from elementary school and now I am raging at how ableist it was.

I remember my teacher hounding us to put down our pencils and fold our hands on our desk, and God forbid you bounce your foot while she was speaking 🙄

I managed to find the exact poster that was used in my class, that dumb fucking smile lives in the deepest reaches of my memories and fuels my righteous anger.

Everything about this is hostile to ADHD or Autistic kids! I'm so mad this was a thing! Just trying to force all children to conform to a standard behaviour.

wait ok. i had a thought. i think terminology like “chronically online” is casual ableism

change my mind (you probably can’t but i make no guarantees)

people on the internet who have takes you disagree with don’t have those takes because they “don’t go outside” they have those takes because its what they’ve grown to believe through the strings of convolution and chaos that make up life

and while I know saying “chronically online” or “go touch grass” isn’t usually meant literally and its more just used as the ultimate “EPIC HAHA FUNNY GOT EM” shut-down for people we disagree with…

it sucks because 1, it’s going to mean literally nothing to the person we say it to, its just such a nothing phrase, and at this point its overused, so why even use it???

and 2, its literally just capitalizing on ableist ideas like

“your opinions do not matter because you are asocialized” or

“your opinions do not matter because you are out of touch with reality” (YIKES) or

“i am not going to listen to you because someone who doesn’t conform to the standards that i conform to cannot possibly be correct”

all unfortunate implications which, yes, terminology like “chronically online” carries if u stop to think about it (in my opinion ok)
