I thought that by now I would have put my road bike on the trainer for the winter but like so many other tasks, I haven’t gotten around to it these busy past few weeks, which meant the relatively nice weather today presented an unexpected opportunity to get out on the roads. I stuck to the streets of my neighborhood for 13 miles and ground my way up lots of big hills. If that was the last road ride of 2018, I went out on a challenging note. #runblr #fitblr #bikeblr #roadcycling #crosstraining #offseasontraining (at Mantua, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrtGdbtBEoI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1a9rkjo6i51lx

#crosstraining day Friday. I had to go to the club to do some work and since I was there anyway, once I was done I got on a spin cycle and rode to nowhere for a bit. I start training for @cucb #cherryblossomtenmiler next week and leading up to that I’ve been just trying to build back the consistency that my training has lacked for so long. Another step in that direction today. #runblr #fitblr #spinning #offseasontraining #masterstrackathlete #ltemployee (at Life Time Athletic - Fairfax) https://www.instagram.com/p/BshcLBhh0vx/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1x9qdueg4ur2h
Aquaman training — not quite
I’ve been emphasizing cross training a lot lately, not because I’m injured or anything but because I feel like I’ve really let that part of my overall routine slide the past couple of years. And I think I’ve paid the price with time on the sideline and diminished performances.
My running mileage has dropped drastically, down to about 15-20 miles per week as a result of this new focus, but when I have run lately, it has felt much better. Could it be because of reduced joint impacts? Or maybe because activities like swimming really work the core? Whatever the reason I’m enjoying the results so far. I feel stronger and more motivated. I will have to step the running back up in mid-January when I start training for spring races but think this is laying down a solid base.
In any case, I spent 50+ in the water today. First I did a 33-minute pool run with the aquajogger belt. Then I ditched the belt, put on the goggles and swam an 800 in 23 minutes. I know that’s slow, but for me it’s not bad.
Back to running tomorrow. I’ve got some track time planned to ring in my 55th birthday.
Tonight was probably the last time until next December that I get to admire the lights outside the house as I finish a run. Tomorrow is #threekingsday and the #12thdayofchristmas, the end of the season. I experimented more with low heart rate running today and it continues to really challenge, and sometimes, frustrate me. Today I set the watch for Zone 2 and told myself if I went into Zone 3 for more than 30 seconds it would trigger a 30 second “walk penalty” to get the heart rate back down. It happened more times than I care to admit. As humbling as these runs are, they are essential to building endurance and teaching your body to use its energy efficiently. That said, I had more fun after the run, when I got to pick up the pace and do some striders. All told about 6.3 miles for the day. I’ve got an indoor track meet in Maryland on the schedule tomorrow, where I hope to get a benchmark mile time that I can use for the training that lies ahead. Then it’s time to get back home and hopefully get ready to watch a @philadelphiaeagles playoff win! #runblr #fitblr #winterrunning #offseasontraining #heartratetraining #sexypacerunning #striders #masterstrackandfield #masterstrackathlete (at Mantua, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsRTwGkB8M_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1s164qzf1b444
Great day for a run today. The trails are so quiet and peaceful when they are covered with snow. We've already had 6 inches with more on the way. Going fast was really not an option today but that just meant more opportunities for scenic photos. And despite the winter scenery, tomorrow kicks off my #springracingseason and the buildup to @cucb #cherryblossomtenmiler and @thenorthface #nfdc #trailhalfmarathon. #winterrunning #snowyrun #runblr #fitblr #offseasontraining #easyrun #fairfaxcountyva #fairfaxcounty (at Mantua, Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bslq397Borb/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=107gj6nyjbcmd
52 minutes of pool running today. And the only time it feels like this is when the high school swim teams show up for practice, start lining up on the deck ready to dive in, and you're just trying to get those last few minutes of your workout in. Am I right?
