Explaining The Importance Of The Flag Change In OFMD Episode 10
So, we all remember when Ed decided to change his flag from this (ep2):
To this (ep10):
right?
But because episode 10 was such a rollercoaster of emotions, I feel like we overlooked this key detail that has been sitting right in front of us the entire time. But I managed to figure it out today and it blew my mind to pieces.
So I decided to do a bit of a google research and apparently there is a certain code of meaning behind certain symbols on pirate flags.
-The skeleton is obviously an homage to the devil
-The drink in its right hand is hence supposed to signify a toast to the devil/evil/cruelty
-The spear in its left hand means war
But what about the bleading heart that Ed forced Frenchie to add?
Well, when I watched the episode for the first few times I always thought of the bleading heart as a metaphor for Ed’s pain which he wants the whole world to know about by showing it on his flag - but no.
Holy fuck no. It is SO much worse.
The bleading heart means that no quarter will be given.
Now “hold up, hold up”, I hear you say, “What does that mean?”
“To give quarter” was the moral code amongst pirates that when an encountered ship was willing to surrender a fight and their goods their lifes would be spared.
So you might have already guessed it, “no quarter given” means that even if the enemy surrenders their lifes won’t be spared.
Or to put it quite literally:
(The new) flag means death
Ed’s heart and mind have been broken so severly that as a result he went from being the man who told Stede that he couldn’t and wouldn’t kill again, to the man who promises anyone, no matter how innocent they may be a certain death if they get anywhere near him.
This man has been triggered so much by Stede’s crew that he literally dropped them of on an island to forget the pain of the love of his life leaving him yet still decided to keep Frenchie around to have someone who could create this new flag.
He willingly accepted the pain of having someone around who reminded him of Stede just to create a physical promise to himself and to Stede that Blackbeard is back - more cruel than ever - and that Edward Teach is now a relict of the past.
I know everyone is talking about how Stede proved he wasn't blinded by love when he told Izzy "He was gonna burn the world or die trying."
But no one is talking about how he proved that his love for Ed doesn't outweigh his love for his crew, when he found out They Murdered Ed, and still decided to save them.
I cant think of any other romcom hero/heroine that would save the murderers of their one true love can you? Even after hearing about the way Blackbeard tortured them for months, he had every reason to just leave them to the mercy of The Pirate Queen and Auntie.
But saving them proved that if Edward is gone he would still have his pirate family to love in his place. I cant imagine that after everything that happened he wouldn't (or atleast try to) immediately tell the crew that Blackbeard isn't dead and find a way to start the healing process with the crew.
I dont think it's gonna be a one episode deal where everyone just says sorry and move on. We see with the trailers and bts that it looks like Ed is gonna try being just Ed (or jeff) off the ship for awhile. Wearing no black leather anymore.
While some of it is probably Ed's journey of self discovery, i wouldnt be surprised if the crew upright told The Co-Capatians that they dont feel safe with Blackbeard on the ship and they need him off it for awhile. Once he's back to full health and all.
I really do hope we focus on The Blackbeard Crew learning how to deal with their Trauma and Stede’s Crew helping them out for a few episodes.
So since I can’t seem think of anything else, here’s another idea for you :
I think that when Ed headbutts Stede, his eyes are suggesting that he’s waking up violently like when you have a nightmare in a movie and you’re sitting up from the trauma.
what if all the sequences with him and Hornigold (Hornigold’s ghost? Just this guy in white?) are a sort of fever dream/coma following an injury or him getting knocked out or drowning?
It’s got this blue haze and Hornigold is always behind him like a mentor figure or a guide.
Ed jumping with the rock and sinking is a metaphor of him choosing to live (« don’t let go ») and killing his past self(« life begins again »).
And maybe it’s Stede’s words « I love everything about you » etc that get him out of it. But that does not mean that he forgave him, just that he’s going to live.
These two shots have to be from the same scene right? So either they're:
Already reunited and working together at this point
OR
This is going to be where their dramatic reunion takes place
Either way, I'm super excited to watch this moment play out!
HOLD THE FUCK ON
I imagened being innkeepers was cute, and then I thought about it.
Let's look back to episode 4. I think I'm not the first person to point out that these lines are foreshadowing:
But... it's not the only thing that was said. And the others are much more specific.
Ok so here's me putting a tiny bandage over the huge wound that is Izzy dying (aka stupid ass hc that makes no sense) (also slight NSFW at the end)
He faked his own death so Ed would finally feel like he's not tied to being Blackbeard anymore. Then he just up and left to find Blackbeard's old ship and became the captain.
(Also Ivan is there too bc he was so hot and I deny him dying. He also left while Ed was in his Kraken era bc he was done with Ed's bullshit)
Then they also found Fang again and he decided to join them as well.
And the rest of Izzy's days were spent sailing the seas and getting railed by men in leather. It's what he deserves.
