Quick question for you since I know you've been in the fandom for a long time. Has Devil's Minion always been the sort of main ship name for Armand and Daniel or did it used to be called something else?

So yeah, the first time I was in VC fandom was starting back around mid-1995 or so, when I got my first computer for a HS graduation present. (Dial-up modem, Usenet, and AOL message boards, yay!) And yes, at least as far back as then Devil's Minion was always the ship name for Armand and Daniel. They never had any other ship name before that, at least from what I saw.

And given that Armand and Daniel was a ship you only knew about if you had read the books, I would say it's fair to guess that was their ship name since Queen of the Damned was first published back in 1988.

Even when the combined name thing began to become a thing online regarding shipping -- and, just personally, I didn't see it start to happen until the really late 1990s . . . before then, people just used to just put a slash (/) between the names, or between the first letter of each name and that was it -- people in VC fandom just kind of stuck with what had come before: 'Devil's Minion' for Armand/Daniel; 'LnL' for Lestat/Louis; 'ALes' for Lestat/Armand; and 'ALou' for Armand/Louis.

Those four are the only ship name combos I remember from back then, though I'm sure there were some others.

Interesting thing about fandom. I have a few fics I've deleted over the years for various personal reasons, but for the most part, I don't delete fics... I have old stuff from over 20 years ago still floating around somewhere (fanfiction dot net). Yesterday, on Ao3, I got a review for something I transferred over that I originally wrote in the 2010s and someone said "I read this when you first published it in 2011. It's one of my favorite fics and I keep coming back to it when I feel nostalgic." Something like that, praising it for being one of their favorite fics. It's one of my Legend of Zelda pieces. it is WILD seeing people back into fruits basket because of the new anime, so i feel as a Fandom Elder, it’s my responsibility to rec one of my favorite all-time fics in any fandom (which i read when it was originally written and published between 2002 and 2003 😱😱):

Love Remains :: girl_starfish

this fic (Stefon voice) has everything: a haunted mansion, love triangles, murder mysteries, victorian aesthetics, an attic full of bones??? essentially: tohru and her mother become caretakers for the old sohma family estate, which they soon find out is haunted by members of the family who tragically died in numbers of three. when the family arrives for an annual ceremony to remember the dead, tohru pairs up with yuki and the boy who lives across the river, kyo, and her friends to find out what is cursing the dead to remain at the estate.

note that yes, the only place this is posted in full is fanfiction dot net, and specifically in the early chapters the author made some old fanfic choices that would probably make me nope out of this today (namely random japanese words in dialogue like okaa-san, and the fic inexplicably being set in an anglicized version of japan). this was very much a product of its time in that sense. that being said, i would recommend powering past these sore points, because the story itself is so wonderfully plotted, the characterization is perfect, the mystery is compelling to the end, and the vibes are immaculate. i have gone back and reread this at least a dozen times over the years and in my heart and mind it holds up.

Hey! I started watching the devil's judge because i saw you talking about it and it reminded of another k drama called Beyond Evil. Have you seen it? It's really interesting and the plot is very smart, maybe you'd like it.

Devil Judge is my very first non-BL drama of basically any type. We'll see if I move from this to more but, honestly, it's unlikely. Also, super stoked that more people are joining this because I ramble about it. Still amazed, love y'all, cannot WAIT for the latest episode to be subbed.

Look, I used to be deeply into the slash scene, making non-canon into canon and yelling about it. I own physical zines from Star Trek and Sentinel and Shogun and Pirates of the Caribbean. I've been writing about non-canonically gay boys being gay since I wrote a fanfiction when I was bored in English class at 14.

I've hit the point where I want more than that from my media.

I still enjoy the occasional non-canon bits and I think it's part of why I can genuinely appreciate and adore so many of the Chinese bromances. Because it's been a part of who I am for so long that it's helped form me into a person.

I wrote fanfiction on fanfiction.net BEFORE the NC-17 ban. I lost one horribly written story to that, thank goodness.

But now I want my media to give me what fanfiction used to give me.

I can watch some shows that don't. But if there isn't a promise of it or a focus on that... I'm just not interested.

The Devil Judge has enough bromance-to-BL energy that I'm happy to watch them for the non-romantic found family aspect and create the romance in my head.

But I'm not super interested in going back to my roots now.

So, we will see. Maybe. But, honestly, I never imagined that these shows would exist when I first got into fandom and I'm so grateful that I don't want to go back to where I was.

Thanks for the message and the rec, though! I understand that most people branch out much more than I have. But I've seen a lot and I've talked to people who've seen more. And, at least right now, I'm not going into shows that don't promise me something more than just besties being besties.
