Regionalismi a Palermo
A university thesis on the “s-word”
A student of the University of Palermo decided to talk about the “s-word” on her thesis and suddenly every national newspaper started talking about it.
The word is clearly onomatopoeic, and in fact it phonetically imitates the sound that it describes.
The word written with spray paint on many walls in Palermo, and not only, it aroused a certain curiousity and interest.
The word that I am talking about is “Suca”, which it simply means “suck”, “suck off”. It can also be written as 800A, which is a sort of code word to disguise the swear word.
With regards to semiotics, the word “suca” is a signifier (signifiant), an image made of these four letters, that detaches itself from its real meaning (signified).
This doesn’t happen with the code word 800A. By trying to disguise the word, in fact, 800A acknowledges its real meaning, as a consequence the signifier takes back its original meaning.
Another interesting fact about this word is that it can be used in different contexts and with different intonations, which means that this word has many and many meanings. The word remains a dirty word. But since it is used in different contexts, its meaning is variable and negotiable.
Time's up (gioco).
