You were awake. 

You didn’t want to be, but you were awake.

You checked your phone, it had only been forty-three minutes since you laid down. 

beepbeepbeep

You groaned and pushed yourself up. You could barely see, having fallen asleep on your stomach; somehow you slept with your face smothered by the pillow, leaning on your eyes. For a moment you blithely wondered how you didn’t suffocate in your sleep, but the incessant beeping from the other room broke you out of your reverie. You stumbled to your bedroom door and opened it with more force than you intended, and it hit the wall and bounced off the doorstopper.

BANG.

Anna and Jungwoo looked up from what they were doing at the table with a start, and Eunji looked up from her phone the same way. It didn’t help that you stood in the doorway looking like a zombie.

“Oh my god! Y/n!” Anna shouted. “Were you asleep?”

“I was.” You shuffled into the room, “I am now...” you waited a moment, as you swayed on uneasy legs “...no longer.”

“You’re even more dramatic when you haven’t slept.” Eunji said as you looked at… whatever it was on the table.

“Explain.” You said as you pointed to it, whatever it was not being in focus.

Jungwoo launched into an in-depth explanation that you didn’t even hear. You looked at the thing with your eyes half open as your vision cleared, still bleary from lack of sleep. You were aware he was explaining it, he pointed at different bits of it as he was explaining it, but none of it stuck in your brain. It just went in one ear, slipped off the smooth surface of your tired skull meats like a newborn deer on ice, and slid right out the other ear where it clattered to the floor and-- you were so tired you couldn’t keep up the metaphor.

You nodded, took out your phone, and called the last person you spoke to.

“Hello?” Jaehyun asked. “Shouldn’t you be asleep?”

“Jungwoo is threatening me with math and I’m scared. Can I sleep there?”

Jungwoo looked at Eunji with an incredulous look, and Eunji looked from him to Anna with a confused face.

Jaehyun laughed. “Yeah, come over.”

You grunted into the phone and hung up. You turned to your friends and proclaimed: “I’m going away now.”

You turned and walked back to your room. You wrenched the phone charger out of the wall and shoved it into your bag, then slung it over your shoulder so haphazardly that you knocked a bunch of pencils and papers off your desk. You closed your eyes and sighed. You didn’t pick it up.

When you walked out of your room, Eunji had her bag too.

“Huh?”

“I’m going to make sure you actually get there since I don’t think you’ll make it without passing out in some random place.”

“I’m glad you trust me so much.”

“It’s not about not trusting you. It’s about taking care of you.” She nodded like a parent as she gestured for you to go with her.

“Awww,” you said and accidentally scuffed your foot on the floor, almost making yourself fall. “Fuck-- Jungwoo, I’m stealing your girlfriend.”

“Have fun,” Jungwoo smiled as he and Anna went back to working on their project.

“I may not seem like a threat right now, but just wait until I’ve slept.”

“I believe you!” He said like a parent cheering on their toddler as they performed at their first dance recital.

“Okay, let’s go,” Eunji said and ushered you out the door.

Some amount of minutes later - you weren’t sure how long - you were in front of the door at Jaehyun and Taeyong’s dorm and Jaehyun was opening it.

“Hey.”

You nodded, eyes almost closed.

“The package has been delivered.”Eunji said and gestured to you.

Jaehyun laughed softly and moved so you could both to walk in. “How was getting her here?”

You kept nodding. You had a song stuck in your head now.

“Not too bad. She keeps dragging her feet and almost fell three times on the way over--”

“Oh my goddd,” you started doing the Orange Justice dance. “I can fucking hearrrr youuuu talking about meeee. Look, I need a hard hitter, I need a deep stroker. I need a Henny drinker, I need a weed smoker. Not a garden snake, I need a king cobra. With a hook in it, hope it lean over.”

If you looked up, you would have seen Jaehyun and Eunji looking at you like you had totally lost it. But you didn’t look up so you didn't see that. You kept dancing even though you couldn't remember any more words and just hummed the melody instead.

“Uhh… I’ll make her some chamomile tea.” Jaehyun said and turned to the cabinets.

“You have that?” Eunji asked, trying to ignore whatever it was you were doing.

“Yeah. Taeyong bought it for when he can’t sleep.”

“Good plan. Our leader is definitely the smartest.”

“The best and most beloved of all my childrennnnnn,” you whined as you danced faster.

Some smaller amount of minutes later, Eunji had left and you were sitting on the edge of Jaehyun’s bed while he sat next to you and waited as you downed the cup of tea.

“I hope it’s not too hot.”

You shook your head, “Perfect temperature.”

He watched as you drank the last of it.

“Hay.”

“What?”

“Camomile tastes like hay. Imma horse.” You held out the mug for him.

He squinted at you for a second. He took it from you and nodded.

Despair struck suddenly. “Oh god, what if I can never sleep again?” You put your hands on either side of your face in horror.

“You’re going to fall asleep soon.”

“But what if I don’t? If-- I’m not? The? Huh? What if I don’t sleep? I’ve been awake for--” You tried to count: all day yesterday, minus the hour you slept, all day today since 2am, minus the 43 minutes you were asleep… “Oh my god, the math makes my head hurt.”

He patted you on the head. “You’ll be able to sleep. I promise.”

You leaned into his hand. He really had been taking care of you for the whole day--

“You’ve really been taking care of me for the whole day.” You looked up at him.

He smiled. “Well, I can’t just let you run yourself into the ground, now can I?”

“Why not? I’m not your responsibility.”

“You’re my friend. You’re my responsibility.”

“That’s it?”

“What?”

Your eyes closed and you felt yourself falling over and startled awake. “Ahh--!”

“Okay.” Jaehyun stood and put the mug on the nightstand. “Get under the blanket.”

“I’m wearing shoes.”

He knelt down and untied your shoes, taking them off and putting them neatly next to the bed. He made you stand, picked up the blanket, and helped you get into the bed. One of your legs was something of a problem for you as you tried to situate yourself.

“Is your phone on silent?”

“I need to charge it.”

You sat up awkwardly like Frankenstein’s monster and made grabby hands at your bag and he handed it to you. You took your phone and its charger out and you put your phone on silent while he plugged the charger into the wall. He took your phone from you, plugged the charger into it and put it face down on the nightstand. You laid back into bed and he helped you to put the blanket around yourself so you’d be comfortable.

“Okay.” He tucked the blanket in around your body. “I don’t want to hear from you for at least three hours.”

You pulled the blanket up around your face and nodded. 

“Alright?”

“Yes, sir.”

He nodded and picked up the mug. “Have a good sleep, okay?”

You nodded again.

He turned off the lights and left the room, closing the door behind him.

In the dark, you snuggled further into the blanket. It was soft and felt like you were wrapped in a cloud. And it smelled like him.

Frame of Mind - Part 97

Synapse and Char jolted awake by the sound of a happy and bubbly Vanna.

“Oh hey, good morning huh?”

Synapse puts his glasses on and blinks as Char grumbled and flopped back onto her bed.

“Morning already…”

Sage and Lumi were up and stretching about as Raptor and Rover were wandering the house.

“Yeah! Come on lazy! Rise and Shine!”

Char grumbled and pulled the blanket over her head as Synapse stood up to stretch.

“Well that was a nice sleep, really comfy beds in such a different place”

Vanna giggled happily and bubbly as Lumi started to look for the tv remote.

“Says the ones who can sleep easily”

Vanna puffed her cheeks at Char’s comment and folded her arms.

“Oh, come on lazy! You slept soundly like the rest of us!”

Char poked her head out of the covers and looked at Vanna.

“Least you didn’t have to worry about dying in the middle of the night…”

Vanna blinked in confused as Sage and Lumi looked over.

“What do you even mean by that?”

Char sat up and moved her hoodie, so they could all see a slightly faded handprint around her neck.

“Did someone try to choke you last night?”

Char somewhat shrugged and nodded at the same time.

“Yeah… Ehecatl was mad at me and choked me out in my dreams so I ended up actually awake earlier…”

Vanna blinked before giving a smug grin.

“Is that really why the two of you were up before?”

Synapse and Char blinked before looking at each other.

“Wait did you hear us wake up?”

Vanna nodded which made Char face palm slightly.

“Mind in… Gutter again…”

Lumi blinked and looked to Synapse.

“You were up earlier? Tell me everything!”

Synapse rubbed the bridge of his nose with a sigh.

“Nothing your gutter mind will have a field date with; I just heard someone wake up and went outside so I followed”

Vanna and Lumi went to look at Synapse with smug grins.

“And why is that?”

Synapse blinked and gave a bored expression.

“Because it was odd someone woke up before us and didn’t wake the rest of us up”

Lumi and Vanna pouted slightly as Xand got up and looked at everyone.

“There is no need to always assume they are doing stuff that would be deemed romantic you two”

Lumi blinked at Xand before picking up the tv remote.

“Found it!”

Lumi turned the tv on and noticed some cartoons were on.

“Oh, hey isn’t this…?”

Char blinked and looked at the tv as Synapse stretched.
