I absolutely love love love the unreliable narrative of Silmarillion. It's a book from the universe itself, written by an elf who was isolated in a hidden city for the majority of the timeline, and one who is reasonably biased against certain people and groups.

The 'Do Whatever You Want' call is really strong in this fandom and I love it.

Intermarriage Between Different Elven Clans

1. Finwë(Noldor)+Indis(Vanyar)

Finrod left his wife in Valinor and had no children in exile. Angrod’s son was Artaresto, who was beloved by Finrod and escaped when Angrod was slain, and dwelt with Finrod. Finrod made him his ‘steward’ and he succeeded him in Nargothrond. His Sindarin name was Rodreth (altered to Orodreth because of his love of the mountains His children were Finduilas and Artanáro = Rodnor later called Gil-galad. (Their mother was a Sindarin lady of the North. She called her son Gil-galad.) Rodnor Gil-galad escaped and eventually came to Sirion’s Mouth and was King of the Ñoldor there.

Of the School the most eminent member after the founder was, or still is, Pengolodh, an Elf of mixed Sindarin and Ñoldorin ancestry, born in Nevrast, who lived in Gondolin from its foundation.

Ok but in Silm canon the crown passed from Fingon to Turgon to Gil-Galad. Already that shows some bias, since the rest of the Noldor in Beleriand almost certainly did not consider Turgon of all neri their high king, not when he was hidden up on his mountain and not ruling them. To everyone else, the line probably went Fingon to Orodreth to Gil-Galad. But fine, Pengolodh was the in-universe writer of the Silm, and he lived in Gondolin, so of course he called Turgon the high king.

Except in Silm canon, Gil-Galad is Fingon’s kid. (We’re ignoring the fact that since Fingon never married a nís he presumably picked up a random orphan off the side of the road to facilitate this.) So Gil-Galad ought to have taken on the title! Even if you assume that he was too young to actually rule (most guesses at his age put him in his late teens or twenties when Fingon died - since Elves come of age at 50, that would have been a child monarch situation) then Turgon could have stepped up as regent, but unless Gil-Galad formally abdicated, then he had no business calling himself high king.

That said, I do think I know why he did that - he straight up didn’t know Gil-Galad was Fingon’s heir. Or that he existed at all. He’d fucked off to Gondolin a long time prior, and Gil-Galad wasn’t at the Nirnaeth, which was the only time Turgon came down the mountain. Iirc sometimes the eagles ferried him news of the outside world, but who knows how comprehensive their summaries were.

Normally I consider Gil-Galad son of Orodreth to be the "canon" version, but now I'm starting to think that that was some historical revisionism propagated by the Gondolindrim to cover up the fact that Turgon accidentally usurped his nephew.

Opening line of the Silm says: "There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called is called Ilúvatar"

Um, excuse me, mr Pengolodh, sir, but where in Arda?

Because I'm pretty sure Númenoreans named their holy days Eru-something. Pre-Númenorean people? Elves? Feanor uses both, but Feanor is an outlier adn a kinslayer... But I suppose Pengoloth might mean all normal Elves?

That would make sense with the text; Pengolodh would say "everyone on Arda" and mean "the elves I know", also IRC, Ainulindale was [in-world] written pre-Exile, by Rúmil, so this "in Arda" probably means "non-weird Elves do it" or "Elves before contact with the Valar do it".

I need to reread the Athrabeth and see how they speak in there.

OK so Finrod also says "Eru" too. ??? I am confused.

This may be just an inconsistency between what Tolkien had in his mind writing the Athrabeth and the Ainulindale sources---? So now I need to check the closer-in-time to Athrabeth versions of Ainulindale...

What. In the earlier version of Ainulindale, Pengolodh consistently uses only "Ilúvatar".

Annals of Aman (in part analoguous to Valaquenta) uses both, name&surname - style.

And in Athrabeth, only "Eru" is used.

...OK, after all this research, I don't know what Pengolodh's deal is. Maaaybe normal Elves say "Ilúvatar", but the Ainur & Men say "Eru", and so does for example Finrod because of the Men, and probably all the Vanyar; they would take their language from the Valar.

So, Pengolodh's "in Arda" = by most Noldor and probably Teleri?
