Regulus dutifully followed the deputy headmistress into the bowels of the castle. They’d walked down four flights of stairs before she broke the silence between them and began asking him questions.
“Were you really attempting to reconcile with your brother?” She asked, keeping her head pointing forward. He would have rolled his eyes if he didn’t think she would know. He’d found that Minerva McGonagall could sense actions like that. If he didn’t know better, he’d swear she had a touch of a seer about her.
“Yes,” He finally answered. It wasn’t a complete lie. He and Sirius had apologised to each other after all.
“Hmm,” She hummed. Regulus wasn’t sure if she believed him or not. “And you were dancing with Sirius and the others?” Salazar’s pointed beard this was tedious.
“No,” He told her. She glanced over her shoulder, praising him with narrow eyes. “They danced because they are lunatics, I watched from the safety of James’s bed.” He realised too late what he’d done. He debated for less than a second whether he could get away with casting obliviate on her. But decided against it. She was too canny for it to stick effectively.
“James?” She asked, the corners of her mouth twitching. “I would have thought you would have addressed him as Potter, but I suppose even upstairs, you appeared rather more familiar with him than I expected,” He had no idea how to answer that. He decided, as it had no true question to it, he’d ignore her prodding. “Ah, here we are. Goodnight Mr Black,”
“Goodnight, Professor McGonagall,” He said curtly, before muttering the password under his breath and walking into the Slytherin Common room to raucous applause.
“What the fuck did you do to get a personal escort from the Gonagalls herself?” Barty called out loudly. If Barty wasn’t one of Regulus’s closest friends, he’d probably have avada’d him by now.
“Oscausi,” He drawled lazily, flicking his wand with as much enthusiasm. Barty’s mouth sealed shut, completely disappearing as though it had never been there. Regulus swept across the common room, hurried into the shadows of the staircase leading to the dorm rooms, and pulled the cloak out from under his robes. He hastily wrapped it around himself and walked back out of his hiding spot. Evan had Barty pinned to the sofa as he squirmed, trying to gouge a hole in his skin where his mouth had been, while Dorcas attempted to cast the outer curse.
“Will you hold still, Crouch, or you’re going to end up with a mouth on your hand instead of your face!” He didn’t find out if Barty got his mouth back in the right place as he was already on his way back up to Gryffindor Tower. He walked invisibly past a small tabby cat with strange markings around its face that looked almost like spectacles. The cat’s eyes followed him as he passed it, and for a moment, he swore it could see him. He brushed that notion off. He was under an invisibility cloak, nothing could see him. But just in case, he picked up the pace and was soon out of sight of the inquisitive cat.
