Pride Month Recommendations- Day 21

In the light of @vkelleyart‘s newest piece, I feel like it’s only fitting to drop my recommendation for Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.

I read over half of this book in one go on a park bench. Most of the lower half of my body was numb by the time I was done, but I was in such nirvana, I didn’t care. This is a book that will make you squeal multiple times over!

The history behind this book is also amazing. Simon and Baz first appeared as characters in the favorite book series of the protagonist of Rowell’s novel Fangirl (which is also an awesome read). Their world, and the fandom surrounding it, draws pretty clear inspiration from Harry Potter. Cath would write fanfictions about Simon and Baz being in love, despite the hetero love triangle that was happening in canon. Well, Rainbow then went on to write Carry On, where we get to see the love story of Baz and Simon actually play out in a canon verse. So, the story is a book based on a fanfiction of a book within a book.

The plot itself follows Simon Snow, the Chosen One who is meant to destroy a creature known as the Insidious Humdrum, a being that sucks away magic. He is in his last year at Watford and is increasingly distracted by the mysterious absence of his rival/mortal enemy, Baz, who he has insisted is a vampire throughout his entire time at Watford.

The POV changes by the chapter, and all of the voices are interesting and often hilarious, particularly Penny. The writing style is top-notch, as I’ve come to expect from Rainbow. Have I mentioned that you will squeal and make other non-human noises while reading this? I won’t go into detail, because you deserve to experience everything for the first time on your own.

There is a sequel to this book titled Wayward Son, which I liked a bit less than Carry On. It suffered from Middle Book Syndrome, and I’m going to wait for the third book’s release before I decide if I prefer Simon Snow as a series or as a standalone.

With all that’s going on now with J.K. Rowling, I think it’s great that there are other stories about wizards and schools that can be true safe places for the LGBTQ community. I will also say that Drarry fans will especially love this book and get the sweet, sweet rivals-to-lovers content they deserve.

My Notes: a cute and well-in character Arthur, as well as reincarnation?? what more could you want? short and sweet!

Happy Pride by slantedknitting— 3k, Teen and Up

Summary: It’s Arthur’s first ever Pride and Merlin is wearing a kilt.

My Notes: I really love the theme and idea behind this fic, and it’s also so in character for Merlin. Love it!!

Heal Your Body to Make Me Whole by fifty_fifty— 46k, Explicit

Summary: Merlin has been Princess Sophia’s bodyguard since he was twenty four and she was twelve. Now, eight years later, she’s out, and wants to attend her first Pride parade. Merlin’s all for it. He’s never hidden his sexuality from his employers, but his number one job has always been protect Sophia and ensure she has the freedom to be herself.

When Sophia’s father decides to hire a second man as Merlin’s backup, however, Merlin takes it as an insult. Not to mention, he thinks the new bloke is an arrogant, homophobic prick.

He doesn't know how wrong he is...

My Notes: I’ll be honest, this is my favourite Modern Era fanfic in this fandom. It’s got a great pace, it’s sexy and full of wonderful pining (y’all know that’s my favourite). Perfect for Pride too!!

Holy fuck where did June go. I hope everyone’s had as pleasant and safe a pride month they can, given present circumstances. For anyone still needing something to take their mind off things, here’s rec 15: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

Congrats to Noelle Stevenson for, among many other things, being the only creator to get two slots on my recs list this year. For anyone that’s even remotely within my sphere of influence that has not watched this show: what are ye doin’ mate? This show is, without hyperbole, easily my favorite show to come out in the last 5 years at the least. it would go back further if I weren’t accounting for Korra. This show is a masterclass in having a diverse, relatable, fun, and compelling cast and making a “standard” heroic plot and setting do WORK to show off that incredible cast. The world presented here is another in a growing list of fantasy settings which have, frankly, raised my bar pretty substantially for fantasy settings in that shit like homophobia or sexism are straight up not present in the slightest and neither are any of the typical trappings that come with them that people sometimes forget to remove as well. More than that this is a show in which love is the driving force behind pretty much everything the heroes and even some villains do but that love isn’t exclusively romantic. Far from it, friendships are portrayed with touching sappiness and authenticity and there’s this general tone of all kinds of love being equal and amazing and I cannot think of any other work that so perfectly captures my philosophy for what makes life worth living. I could gush for hours. Go watch it if you haven’t. Re-watch it if you have. For the returning watchers: try to rope a friend into watching it with you. This show is so amazing and everyone needs to see it.
