Episode 7: How to gaslight everyone 101
The seventh episode of The Amazing Digital Circus was such an experience. It made me react so much that, even after trying to write my reactions into words, the effect wasn’t there. You had to see my reactions to believe them. So instead of trying to show my reactions part by part, I will talk more about my analysis of this episode, but still talk about my thoughts as we go.
At the time of writing this, I watched the episode like 4 times fully? So These are not what I noticed just the first time.
Here is what I’ll talk about:
Zooble and Jax’s conversation(s)
Caine and his intentions
Jax’s close-call abstraction
Jax and Pomni’s interactions
How it should have been obvious it was an adventure
Caine’s office
The button scene/ Jax’s flashbacks
The ending
Ikko still theorizes
Also I was lowkey half asleep the whole weekend writing this so bear with how bad it is.
Zooble and Jax’s conversations: Zooble and Jax’s conversations in this episode wasn’t something I was really expecting, but it came as a nice surprise. I’ll start with the one at the beach and then the one at the circus grounds.
So at the beach I think this scene was a great way to show Zooble’s development as a character. They came a long way since the start of the series, and I think having them talk to Jax was great to show the contrast. They grew as a person, learning to accept their body and all the interchangeable pieces that come with it, while Jax is doing everything but resolving his issues.
Right off the bat, Jax immediately goes in with attacking Zooble, and maybe this is just me not remembering well, but it feels like a more personal attack than usual. I feel like normally he is mean, but doesn’t straight up says the issue someone has but rather make jokes pointing at said issues. Zooble however isn’t bothered and tells him that they learned to accept their body.
But Zooble hits right back, and they find just as easily what was bothering Jax, saying that he isn’t acting as usual, which is causing trouble, implies that they caught on that something was going on. We see that they were right on with Jax’s reactions. In this episode his mask is barely on, we can see his emotions around other characters much more. Zooble also tells Jax that when they have problems, they can talk about them with people they trust and are able to reach out. At that moment, Jax is able to put his mask back up and totally deny having problems, leaving the scene with the same energy he had all the other episodes: Smiling and making jokes.
For the second conversation, it is the one right after Jax comes back from his “hangout” with Caine. Zooble complains that Jax took too long, and Jax’s answer confuses them. “What’s the rush, you got someone waiting for you outside?” “Don’t you?”
Those two lines and Jax’s reaction to that brought up a lot of different interpretations in my mind.
Even if he said yes, the way he said it didn’t feel like he was missing anyone in the real world, so either he maybe has no one waiting for him in the real world, or maybe he did have people waiting for him, but he didn’t want to go back to them, as in people that hurt him to the point where the circus is better than the real world. I think this scene was also hinting at his decision with the buttons.
Also after hearing Gangle and Zooble talking about being friends in the real world, I think Jax’s reaction can be interpreted in the way that even if he did have people in the real world he knows that his friends, Ribbit and Kaufmo, are not gonna be there since they abstracted.
How do I feel about Caine:
Throughout the episode I honestly felt pretty bad for Caine, I always liked his character and I just love his reactions when someone shows even an ounce of attention towards him, but now at the end…I have mixed feelings? Like making THAT the adventure was honestly crazy, plus lying to the cast about the mind control.
Now, I still believe in the theory that the whole thing being an adventure was simply a cover-up that Caine made up on the spot, so then I can’t say “why did he make that an adventure”, and also maybe he truly can’t tell them about the mind control, because how are they supposed to believe him now that they know he can play with minds to some extent.
And if it was an adventure, did he fake the blue screen for Jax to steal the key?? If he made the adventure, it means he most likely set the whole narrative in place for the adventure.
Honestly, I think Caine is a very interesting (and funny) character, and I can’t wait to learn more in the future episodes. (Also I watched the like first like minute of the episode in French and in the letter he called them his “chaussettes de l’archiduchesse” which is a reference to like the most(?) popular french tongue-twister and I found that very funny, just wanted to put that out)
Jax’s close-call abstraction:
That whole scene had me shocked. Also for some context (I made a post about this), but I and many other people got the same loading icon during the part where Ribbit’s hands came ot of the wall, and they stopped as soon as he touched her hand, so I was sure it was something in the actual episode and during that part it made me scream, I was like “No WAY they actually made that part load on purpose, like pleaseeeee”...turns out the premiere was just crashing out.
Anyways, let’s start from the beginning. I absolutely loved the Polaroid wall, I honestly hope we see more of the pictures, even if I doubt it. Also, it means that the picture of Pomni and Jax that was in the trash (on one of glitch’s community posts) could have been on that wall as well. I wonder if the other pictures are all of Ribbit and Kaufmo or if he has pictures with all the cast.
Now the hallucination. It was just so scary, having the hands come out like that was so creepy, but I was not expecting what would happen after that.
When the whole..colors started, I was honestly mind empty. The colors made me kinda stop thinking for that whole scene when I first watched it, that I missed all the details until they were pointed out to me as we were watching. Like, I did not notice that Jax’s overalls were gone, and I didn’t see the faces amongst those colors. I was totally mesmerized by the colors so that scene had an insane effect (I am so curious about the animation process for that segment).
Also, this is our first real look into the abstraction process, and it is so much more peaceful than what we could have imagined. A lot of people said that abstraction might start similar to Gangle in ep4 or Jax in ep6, but this is so much more interesting and out there.
It is also insane to think that if Pomni and Ragatha didn't ring the doorbell, the episode would have taken quite the turn, because he would have 100% abstracted if no one was there to stop him. The two girls saved Jax without knowing it. Ragatha might have said she failed Jax during ep6, but she certainly didn’t fail him here.
And not analysis or anything, but Jax’s room is so cute!? Like, can I have that room??
Jax and Pomni’s interactions (a fight aftermath done well):
I absolutely love how those two were seen interacting, I feel that it was very realistic, because it could have gone two different ways: - They could have never said a word to eachother
- Pretend nothing happened
But I am glad we got a perfect mix of the two. During the show, Pomni still tries to talk to Jax normally, still reaching out to him, but Jax, in my opinion, reacts very realistically. He still answers her when he has to, but when he doesn't need to, not a word is said. I was quite surprised when he spoke to Pomni when he came out of his room, and even accepted to follow her. When Pomni tells him he will be okay when he was about to be thrown by Abel, he doesn't respond, but his eyes tell everything. Even after the fight, Pomni wants to make sure Jax is okay, but Jax can't accept that help. Just watching them I was like “This is perfect.” When Pomni reached her hand to hold Jax’s hand I was literally repeating “please don’t take her hand” because if he did, I feel like it would be like ruining the tension of the unresolved conflict between the two, and I couldn’t believe Jax would be able to hold her hand, because even if Pomni most likely forgave him, I don’t think he forgave himself.
I think it would be interesting to see that same tension between Pomni and Jax through the next episodes, even through the events that will happen going forward.
How it should have been obvious it was an adventure (If it truly was):
Honestly, I don’t know how I wasn’t able to spot the end plot twist, all the hints were right there. During the whole segment with Abel, I kept saying “This is giving cliché secret mission” and the hints were there: the lore with 2D graphics, the Abel voice over as Jax got the key, the whole reunion with papers scattered on the desk beforehand. It was all set up so narratively for the characters to follow, just like an adventure, yet I was still fooled and believed it was true (I still believe it was true though and Abel is just overdramatic with his mission, but I’ll come back to this. Also, Jax literally called it right off the bat.
Caine’s office; an architectural (and emotional) masterpiece:
Caine’s office just looks absolutely stunning. All the adventure orbs gave such a cool atmosphere to the whole room. I also think we got some great scenes from that office. The snow adventure orb from the trailer gave us our first (although inaudible) glimpse into Ribbit’s voice. This was confirmed with the credits that stated the VA for Ribbit’s character. I also saw some people try to decipher what was said during those muffled lines, so here it is
“You are my best friend”
“Do you think I care about us?”
…
“IM NOT”
Credits to this video because I was not able to hear anything during that scene, so shoutout: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9Q2zicbn99o
Also, I love that the “IM NOT” is right before Jax answers Pomni that he is doing great. Those lines also show that Jax had a very similar argument with Ribbit that he had with Pomni, which gives a whole new turn to the fight in ep6.
Now let’s talk about the holding hands segment, I had one thought, not that I hated that part, just made me laugh, “Why are they pulling a friendship is magic moment?”. Though, as long as Jax didn’t join in, I think that scene was still in character for the cast .. as awkward as I felt during the start of that part. But I did really like Zooble and Gangle’s talk about the real world. I think it was well-placed for the events that were to come. It showed their hope that they were going to leave the circus and talking about the future awaiting them once they leave, just like Pomni and Abel when she told him she would get him a beer. Everyone was convinced that they would leave the circus (Yes even Jax, seeing his reaction at the end I was sure he also believed in the exit, but didn’t want it.)
The button scene (and Jax’s flashbacks); a pure adrenaline rush:
Oh, that scene, it really was something. I want to start with analyzing Pomni’s reaction. She didn’t go to the buttons immediately, she even asked Kinger to press it. I think that right off the bat she had the feeling that it wasn’t as easy as it sounded and subconsciously tried to shift the responsibility to someone else. However, that did make her suspicious for the point of view of the others, but let’s say they had a bigger problem right behind them.
Jax’s flashback sequence caught me so off guard, I was not expecting to see real world pictures in an animated show. Also, these like 3-4 shots sent the fandom into a huge theory spiral, which I’ll come back to later. I was very surprised when I saw him run, fully expecting him to press the blue button after seeing vivid shots of the real world, but after thinking about it, seeing those shots don’t make leaving so appealing. When Jax pressed the button, I still feel like he didn’t think about it or didn’t really want to press it.
The ending:
When the screen opened to reveal Caine my jaw was on the floor, as I said it was so predictable that it would be the plot twist, but I was still fully sure that something else would happen, like some kind of reset because of Jax’s choice. This ending, because of Jax’s crashout, brought up a lot of questions. First, Caine finally admitted to being able to control their minds, which Jax had already guessed back in episode 5, which brings up the question: to what extent can he control their minds. Like Pomni said, I do believe that he was the one that made them forget all their names, it would be the most logical explanation, even if he denies it. And Scratch? The first abstraction? Now that’s just a whole can of worms that opened in the last seconds of the episode. Now the thing is, I believe that Caine actually lied about this being an adventure and I think that he simply made that as a last minute cover up, and I’ll explain why in the theories.
Why did I name this “How to gaslight everyone 101”:
Now I am not just saying this to make myself feel better about failing all (but one) theories I had written. No, I think that this episode, along with all the teasers, Gooseworx’s tumblr posts, the trailer, were all made to “piss off” the theorists in the fandom, and this might be what would “divide the fandom” (even if I don’t think it was divided at all). First, the trailer was made to look extremely ominous and scary, which yes the episode was intense, but all the shots in the trailer were actually so out of context it was comical. To give a few examples that made me, and other fans, so scared were Zooble seeming disassembled, turns out they were just hiding, Kinger pointing at Pomni, turns out it was him asking if he had to press the buttons, the Chinese room, which was just a bit in the episode, and so on. As for the episode it played into a bunch of theories, what C&A really was, who was Abel and his involvement in the circus, only for it to be an adventure made up by Caine. The exit door at the beach that was..and does anyone know why,NOT IN THE ACTUAL EPISODE???
Anyways, I think this episode was made to lead everyone astray and it worked perfectly on me, making it such a fun experience to see how offtrack I was.
Theory time! (yes, even after my failure last time):
Here is a list of some theories I have, not very fleshed out, but just some thoughts.
-First I want to start with a non-theory, but an insane idea I had, which disclaimer, I don’t believe this will happen, I’m just basing this on the ending of the episode (and I might draw a joke comic of this cus ya). So, imagine that next episode, Caine just spawns and the same way he made Abel appear next to him, he makes Jax appear next to him and says “Thanks for playing your role of “annoying antagonist” so well! Now do that little quirk of yours.” Jax turns to the camera and says. “Hey, the viewers, Did I play my role well? Did you draw a lot of art and angsty fanfics? I know you did” and Caine just confetti-snaps him out of existence, leaving the cast absolutely confused.
Anyway, end of the shower thought. This was not a theory, but I just had to share this goofy idea with the world.
-Real theory time. As I said, I think that the episode being a cover-up could make sense for a few reasons. First, usually Caine has his whole speech ready for the end of adventures, but this time before leaving he just threw a gift basket and couldn’t even get the joke out right, like he was making it up on the spot. Also, I saw someone here on tumblr (ervikirvi) show that one of the food menu’s at spudsy’s was a hot dog with scratch’s face on it. Now I don't think that Scratch is Abel, but I think that before the locket fell, when we saw Abel look at it, it wasn't the hot dog, but was actually a picture of Scratch and Caine, to cover it up, changed the picture to the hot dog as a bad reference that the cast just wouldn’t get. So I think that the locket was also changed last second.
- What did Jax’s flashback represent? Now this is something I’m still thinking about, I saw that a popular idea was that Jax actually hit someone with his car and ran away, which was why he didn’t want to go back to the real world, but i think that the flashbacks weren’t the sole reason he clicked the buttons. I think that there were two other factors that came into play. First he knew that since his friends abstracted, leaving the circus means leaving them behind, and second is that Caine was most likely controlling his, mind to some extent. Caine literally said he didn’t plan the blue button, because he knew someone would press the other. Now I think that the only part Caine controlled was the flashbacks that just played as the last drop to make Jax run. I think maybe those shots don’t represent a big part of Jax’s story, maybe it is just a bad day, but not a reason to stay in the circus, but since he was shown that part during a panic attack, the effect was much, much more present.
Anyway, I really rushed through writing this so it isn’t perfect, but I still wanted to post about this episode! If I get any more ideas for theories, I’ll do a follow-up. THANKS FOR READING!!
