James watched the clock tick closer and closer to the hour mark. He was fully prepared to go down there and drag Regulus out of the potions lab, but for now, he had to restrain himself from going down there and disturbing them. He’d come to realise that Regulus would never willingly leave that room unless James convinced him to. Which was why he was completely taken aback when, with only a minute left until the hour was up, Regulus appeared at the door.
“Hey, love…”
“Remus, I need you,” Regulus cut him off and beckoned Remus towards him.
“What? No, love, you promised,” James stood and put a hand on Remus’s shoulder, stopping him from following Regulus.
“I figured out the antidote,” Regulus told him, his gaze flashing to Remus, telling him something silently that James didn’t understand. Remus suddenly ducked out from under James’s hand and bolted for the door.
“We won’t be long!” Regulus said hurriedly before he shut the door and locked it tight. “Two hours tops. We’ll be up for dinner. Say hi to Evan and Barty for me,” and with that, James was left on his own again. He didn’t think he’d been this brushed aside ever. It was a strange feeling.
James shrugged his shoulders. It was refreshing not to be surrounded by his friends for a change. He was at a loss for what to do next. A ball of sapphire blue yarn soared through the air and hit him in the chest. He had to scramble to catch it before it fell to the floor and rolled away.
“Grab some needles and get knitting. Your mother would love a new scarf,” his dad told him, and with nothing better to do, James did as he was told.
Three hours later, James had the beginnings of a very lumpy scarf hanging off his knitting needles, as did Evan and Barty. They’d come back two hours ago and been trapped in Monty’s web of yarn. Effie had come in and turned right back around, snorting with laughter. She’d returned quickly, holding up the camera and snapping a picture of them before anyone could protest. She’d plied them with tea and biscuits to make up for it and promised both Barty and Evan that she would get them a copy.
Regulus and Remus appeared just as the last biscuit was consumed, looking exhausted but with huge grins on their faces.
“It works,” Regulus told them, and the room fell silent.
