Flavor is your friend in fifth edition as a player. Just how you describe the appearance of what you do can define major aspects of your character. Playing a warlock who uses their fists to attack? Why not just cast Eldritch Blast and flavor it as you imbue your fists with arcane energy to attack? Heck you can make multiple attacks this way due to multiple beams. Someone is gonna say in the notes how would you punch an enemy 30 feet away as per the range of Eldritch Blast? Use your imagination! Maybe you launch energy spectres of your fists or perhaps the power of your strikes are so great that the aftershocks reach that far! Sure spells and stuff have set descriptions of their appearance but why let that stop you! I say make these things your own as you are in fact the person using them. Make Fireball one of the trademark spells a literal sun! That rather than exploding just temporarily envelops the radius of the spell!

Species Mix

For any particular region, town, village, etc. How mixed is the area? Are the vast majority of people one particular group, or are there a couple different races / specie groups that are all pretty common?

Additionally, how do these groups settle? Is the area very mixed with people of different species / races living side by side, or within that area have different groups formed their own smaller communities, with for example elves and humans typically living in special areas? If this is the case, is this by some law(s), or is it just generally what people tend to do?

Also, how do people receive other races/species, either from that area or outside? Do Dwarves scowl at Elves in disgust? Do they view Humans as friends or allies, or just another stranger on the street? 

Events around the world should also effect this in some way, particularly if races in an area are patriotic. If the orcs are preparing to attack the Dwarven homeland, players should start to see rising tensions between Dwarf and Orc / Half Orc groups in most areas.

Have the Big Bad become a party member of your player characters. They think that its just a helpful NPC that will make things easier on them. Little do they know, their new friend is learning everything they can about the characters, and is casually getting the party to help them with their misdeeds instead of shutting it all down.

If you’re crafty, you can give your party all sorts of hints that they won’t be able to pick up on it until it’s too late.

Have I mentioned my love for the warlock class? I love the way its set up mechanic wise, the flavor potential, and the spellcasting is evocative as heck!

Want to have a pact with a cosmic being that allows you to summon shooting stars when you cast eldritch blast?

Want to be the only mortal that can comprehend the madness of the great old ones?

Want to have an archfey that abducted you as a child to be the friend of their own child?

Want to have your soul sold to the lord of the hunt before your birth and have to pay the price for it by serving them?

Want to make a pact with a storm elemental that like a symbiote lives in your body disguised as your natural bioelectricity?

Want an ancient dragon to keeps you as part of its hoard and in exchange grants you a long life and its protection?

Want some sword you picked up whisper into your mind that you need to fight against those who oppress you?

Want the spirits of your ancestors to grant you great power to protect the current members of the bloodline?

Want Asmodeus to favor you because you remind them of a mortal they once loved many eons ago?

Want to be the only survivor of a shipwreck and then have the dead souls of your crewmates grant you access to the arcane and in exchange you take care of their unfinished business on the mortal plane?
