A/N: This entire fic is really dedicated to my headcanon that the Thorston twins are genderfluid and that each name is actually linked to what gender they currently are (aka Ruffnut is the "girl" name and Tuffnut is the "boy" name. When they have no gender or both, it's "Thorston") Also I was fully thinking of the Astrid drawn by @bignostalgias while writing this

“Nut, what are you doing?” Astrid asks, feeling rather amused, looking at her partner hanging from her bicep. Astrid raises her arm, and Nut picks their feet up to dangle.

“Ruffnut,” the other girl says, voice low and teasing. Astrid nods in acceptance and raises an eyebrow. “So?”

“I’m bored,” Ruffnut complains, kicking her feet out, using Astrid’s bicep as a makeshift swing. It only half works, since Astrid is one of the shorter members of their group and the twins are the tallest.

“Why aren’t you with your twin?” Astrid asks. Usually they entertain each other the most, though Astrid doesn’t mind entertaining her girlfriend.

“We’re not getting along right now,” Ruffnut says.

“What happened this time?” Astrid asks, knowing how prone the twins are to getting into random fights.

“She wants to be Ruffnut, but I called it,” Ruffnut says and Astrid nods. Another one of those fights. She’s surprised they still happen, except she isn’t really. “We need someone big and strong to solve it.”

Astrid raises an eyebrow. “Do you?”

“Yes.” Ruffnut nods firmly, letting go of Astrid’s arm and spinning away to stand in front of her. “So will you?”

“Are you sure you don’t want Hiccup?” Astrid asks.

Ruffnut groans, deflating with her entire body, arching backwards till her hands nearly touch the ground. Astrid suppresses the fond expression her face wants to make. “Ugh, he never takes my side! He always says we should just share. As if we don’t share enough.”

“Alright, let’s see what we can do,” Astrid says and Ruffnut immediately perks up, shooting straight up like an arrow.

“Alright! That’s what I’m talking about!” She cheers.

They find Ruffnut’s twin back at Dragon’s Edge. She’s nudging at an unlit campfire and Astrid genuinely can’t tell if she’s preparing to light a new one or just being bored, but she’d bet chores on the latter. The second they bring up the name situation, she scrambles to her feet with a glare and an accusing finger.

“It’s not fair! You always get the name!” The other twin complains, holding her chicken close. Grumbling, she adds, “Chicken would let me have hers.”

“Then why don’t you take it?” Ruffnut mocks, sticking her tongue out at her twin. “It’d be perfect for you.”

“Because it’s hers and I don’t steal other people’s names, you name stealer,” the other twin says, glaring sharply.

“It’s not stealing if I called it fair and square, numbnuts,” Ruffnut says.

“It is if I didn’t get the chance to call it first,” Ruff declares, setting Chicken down.

“As if you ever let me call Tuffnut first,” Ruffnut says, crossing her arms.

“I do,” Ruff says. “It’s not my fault you sleep during it.”

“Should we get Hiccup?” Fishlegs asks, looking at Astrid nervously, and Ruffnut turns a smile to him, all teeth. Fishlegs audibly gulps.

“No need!” Ruffnut says, taking two long strides to Astrid and looping her arm through her girlfriend’s. “Astrid has agreed to fight for my honour.”

“Really?” Fishlegs asks and Astrid shrugs.

“I figure why not,” Astrid says with a smile which is certainly less dangerous than Ruffnut’s, even if it’s no less promising.

“No fair! I don’t have anyone to fight for my honour!” Ruff complains.

“I’ll fight for you,” Fishlegs says, trying to be helpful. Ruff looks over at him. She makes a face.

“Fine, you can have the name. I’ll be Nut today.”

“Hey!” Fishlegs protests at the slight.

“Thanks, Fishlegs,” Ruffnut grumbles. “Now I’ll never get to see Astrid fight for my honour.”

“Did I hear something about fighting?” Snotlout says, walking up out of the woods with Hookfang trailing behind him.

“Why don’t you just keep with Ruff?” Fishlegs asks.

“Because-” Both twins say together and pause. They look at each other, then Fishlegs.

“You know, we’ve never thought about this,” Ruff says, rubbing her chin. “It’s quite intriguing. What say you, sister mine?”

“I’d concure. It’s a rather elegant solution to our eternal quarrel. Let’s do it,” Ruffnut says and they both nod, before spitting in their palms and shaking on it. Fishlegs looks disgusted at the action, while Snotlout just looks disappointed and Astrid shakes her head fondly.

“So… what happened here?” Hiccup asks, walking up to stand next to her with Toothless and Jack by his side. Astrid gives him a wry smile.

“Twin name rivalry. Though Fishlegs may’ve just solved our problems permanently,” Astrid says.

“What’d he do? Get them to pick an extra name for days like this?” Hiccup asks, giving her a wry smile back. A light catches in both twin’s eyes, their heads swiveling to him like two terrible terrors.

“New names?” They say, twin smiles growing and the others groan. Astrid smacks Hiccup on the back of the head.

“Nice going, Hiccup. Now they’re gonna argue about this,” Astrid huffs, though she doesn’t sound too upset.

“Sorry, sorry,” Hiccup says, holding his hands up in defense, his mouth twitching into a grin as Jack’s laugh sparkles in the air.

Ruffnut knows exactly which buttons to press with any of her partners. Man, woman, doesn’t matter, she knows them well enough to know how to get them all riled up.

And Astrid loves a good fight. Which works out well for her, because Ruffnut can appreciate a rough lover.

She started out small. Getting on her nerves by asking her what she was up to when it was obvious she was training for combat. Astrid was in the arena, after all. In the arena, assaulting poor defenseless targets with her axe and the sweat on her brow tells her for how long she’s been at it.

The sight of her worked body and her prowess just pushed Ruffnut onward. Asking questions that broke her concentration, making relatively dumb statements on purpose, “accidentally” knocking over a target, … She’ll do just about anything to rile Astrid up.

And then she does. She succeeds. She riles her right up and Astrid knows exactly what to do with her.

Still in the arena together, Astrid pins Ruffnut against the stone wall and smashes their lips together. There are a variety of reasons why she would train herself to the bone, but when such a session gets interrupted it leaves her restless and bursting with energy and it wants to escape. Since there are only two reasons Ruffnut would have to interrupt her- to either annoy her or because she is horny- that just got her even more worked up.

So she has her pinned up against the wall, their lips and tongues locked in a heated kiss. Ruffnut moans in satisfaction and relief, throwing her arms around Astrid’s neck to keep her close. This is what she was hoping for when she came in search of her girlfriend. She desired her attention, her touch, her lips.

Upon hearing her moan and without releasing her from this kiss, Astrid lifts her by her butt and her legs settle around her waist. She keeps Ruffnut pinned, their kisses grow more heated by the second. Her arms must be burning from all that axe-throwing, but that doesn’t seem to matter to her.

They pull away for a much needed gulp of air, both their cheeks deep pink.

“Your hut or mine?” Astrid asks.

“Whichever’s closest!” She puts her girlfriend down and that is where they head.
