Imagine a self aware game character.

You're a college student, neck deep into school works all day, with even less time for yourself these days. The only times you're free is spent in booting up this one game.

At first, it was because of boredom. Despite being overloaded with course works, you found yourself losing focus and opted to download a game to take a break. That's when you got hooked.

Either from the graphics, the storyline, or the gameplay, you've always set some time aside to log in everyday, getting the daily bonuses and finishing quests to keep being active. But the main reason for your dedication is...

Them.

It was love at first sight for you. Maybe it's the voice, maybe it's their character model, or maybe it's their personality and role in the story that got you hooked. Needless to say, you got to work. Whether it's getting their character, skins, materials, or weapons, you squeezed every free game currency you can get due to being broke and being free to play.

You bulldozed through the main story, side stories, events, surveys, and missions to get everything you need; You met people in co-op and garnered quite the reputation due to how strong your character, them, had become. You even set them as main menu character for them to greet you every time you log in.

Their affection meter is maxed out, giving you reprieve from your hellish schedule by hearing how they care for you and how they want to help you. God, this is heaven. You can cry on the spot but you're in class right now.

Running on three hours of sleep and spite for everything, you thought you could play a little bit before the professor arrived, only to get bamboozled and have the class start the moment you opened the app, making you leave your phone at the side of your table while you take notes. With how your device is positioned, it's kind of like having someone on a video call despite it just showing the home menu. The idle animation plays as you keep your focus on the lecture, unaware that they aren't moving like they usually do anymore.

They stopped acting when your eyes left the screen, no, they long since stopped being just a character way before that.

They're flattered, really, having someone invest so much time for them even if they didn't have to. But you're relentless, it's almost mad. Were you mad? They considered it, seeing that you always log in during ungodly hours on the night, looking like you're seconds away from collapsing. They know you're always busy, with how much you rant to them about your deadlines and wail about your grades like they can hear you. They do. And god do they want to do something about it.

It wasn't always like this. They weren't even aware that they're in a video game to begin with, and perfectly lived like how they were supposed to be in the plot. It was you who woke them up.

They don't know how it happened or when they realized it. It's just that every day, you never fail to visit them. Sometimes, you don't even play, you're just there, talking to them about your life, sometimes even gushing about how you like them so much... it's the latter that always happens, much to their initial embarrassment. Did you treat them so much like a person that they became one? Perhaps so, that's what they think of sometimes.

Self aware game character who, knows about other worlds due to the plot of the game they're in. They went to said worlds and met many creatures who are far from human, so they weren't surprised upon figuring out that you're not from their own, much less about the reality of their existence. They're a game character? Their world is a mere entertainment for the people in yours? They've seen gods, this isn't new.

Though, looking at you now, you don't seem to be the cruel kind of god. You look pitiful at best with how you're barely holding onto consciousness every day, yet you still spend your time to make them stronger and give them everything you can offer. Why? What's so good about them that you're willing to go this far?

They've been through so much, experienced grief and loss throughout their life, that they learned to shoulder everything on their own. But you? You're willing to do everything you can to make them happy. You cried when you find out about their past. You look at them like they're your equal. That, they don't understand. You don't fight, you're practically a civilian, someone who won't last a minute on a battlefield. Yet, they can always feel you whenever they're fighting off monsters. It's because of you that they don't get hurt anymore. Even if they die, they'll just revive later. There's pain, but it can't be helped. But when you arrived, that became less frequent with how cautious you are as a player. Why do you apologize if you fail to make them dodge in time? Or when they can't avoid an attack? You're not the one getting hurt so why do you look like it?

Self aware game character who, fought so many enemies in every gameplay but all they're looking forward to isn't the rewards but your face of relief, thanking them for surviving and telling them that they did a good job. Not that they're looking for your praise...! You just look as stressed as you do whenever you're cramming every time you play a difficult level, so they can't help but worry! You really need to get off the game. They don't mind if you miss a few days, just get some sleep!

Self aware game character who, was thankful for the voice lines they have. Unlike the npcs, they can actually talk to you. It took some tweaking, but they were able to add more lines every time you increase their affection level. Though, they need to be extra sneaky since you maxed it out already! Don't think they missed it when you crumbled when they said that the present they want the most is you.

How cute.

Self aware game character who, watches you study in class. Your brows are furrowed, eyes barely open as you bounce your leg to keep yourself awake. They don't know what's happening whenever you close the app, so they're grateful for the small windows of time where they could just spend time with you without going through quests or scripted story events. While their view is limited, they can hear your professor and classmates in the background, and if they close their eyes, it almost feels like they're just sitting beside you in the classroom.

How nice would it be if that happened.

Maybe they should reward you with a specialized story later, you'd like that, won't you? It's the least they could do for all the things you did for them. The thought of seeing your flustered face while they openly express their affection made them slip a laugh, which was quickly masked when you glanced at their direction, confused upon hearing a familiar voice. They never went back to their idle animation this fast in their life.

Self aware game character who starts to look forward whenever you accidentally leave the game on. That way, they can imagine what is it like to be in your side of the world. Will they also be a student in your major? Will you two be classmates? Roommates? How will you two meet? During a meet-cute at the library? Cafeteria? Or perhaps they aren't even going to your school, and you just happen to meet in the sidewalk.

With all of the blood that stained their hands over the years, the callouses that are painfully apparent in their hands, will they even be allowed to be by your side? Why do they even dare to think of sullying your life by being in it? But, still, they want to meet you.

Maybe it's your mundane life that they want to protect. Maybe they want to be part of your normal life. Maybe they want to be there to take care of you like you did for them.

Maybe, if they're allowed, they'll live the rest of their life with you.

Self aware game character who, wants to reveal that they're sentient. You'd like that, won't you? You like them, a bit too much in their opinion, and they... aren't sure if they should act upon their feelings. You're worlds apart, literally, and what are the chances that this will work? What if you get repulsed upon the revelation? What if you think that they're presumptuous, daring to be with someone who's in par with those that created him? What if you get bored and delete the game? What then? Will you come back, or will they just have to stare at the abyss, hoping to see a glimpse of you once again?

Self aware game character who bite back the words they want to say. Words that they should've said a long time ago, but can only write them to an in-game mail for you to see.

Thank you for picking up this game, you were pretty bad as a starting player.

Thank you for choosing me amidst all of the characters here.

Thank you for all the things you did for me, even if you didn't have to.

Thank you for playing my events even if you had to lose sleep because of me.

Self aware Dmc where they can hear you or see you during cutscenes or during general gameplay. Not knowing how to feel about someone watching and even controlling them. Hell, you even talk to them as if they could hear you. I mean they could but you didn’t know that, and it’s not like they could respond if they wanted to.

Self aware Dmc where they slowly grow fond of you and the way you fawn or panic over them. Getting them more skills, sounding like you’re close to tears when they get hurt on accident and start apologizing. Or hearing you praise them for a job well done after a fight and even say “We did it! Or rather you did it…still! Good job!” and them chuckling internally since they know you didn’t include yourself due to not wanting to take any credit or something similar.

Self aware Dmc where the characters recognize you no matter what console you play in or no matter which game of the franchise it is. They’re glad to see you again and how excited you are to keep learning of their world.

Self aware Dmc where they love to see your reactions to certain things in cutscenes. Like finding the small numbers of each mission hidden in the cutscenes of Dmc 3 (you looked so cute when you got excited once you found the number). Or when you fought Vergil for the first time in Temen ni gru (he couldn’t help but be amused as you panicked when Dante almost died and when you started cheering once you got a hit in on him). Or when you looked so lost during Dmc 2 (Dante almost broke out of character when he uttered the lines “Do you have to ask?” and you just blew up and begged for answers due to the lack of context of the entire thing. How adorable). Or when you cried or teared during any emotional moment and worried over them (Lady still appreciates the concern you showed when she shot her father. And Nero and Kyrie are glad they had someone who cared so much for them when they were sealed in the Savior).

Self aware Dmc where they love seeing flustered over certain moments in the game too. It’s definitely their favorite thing to hear you shamelessly fawn over them, especially since you think they can’t hear you. If you happen to have a favorite from the cast, when you’re offline, they’d brag to the others on how much they fawn over them instead of anyone else. (Nero, for example, was extremely smug when he heard you sputter after saying “Gotta pay attention, sweetheart”. You could barely speak coherently, that’s too cute)

Self aware Dmc where they have to stay in character when they hear you cuss out any minor enemies or main antagonists during boss fights or cutscenes as if you’re arguing with them. Some of the insults aren’t half bad, they’ll give you that. Even if it barely makes sense to them.

Self aware Dmc where they feel bad when you get frustrated over a particular boss fight and can’t get through it after several tries. They don’t like seeing you beat yourself up for it and it makes them want to try even harder for your sake. Anything to make sure you don’t cry…again.

Self aware Dmc where they try to tweak some of the dialogue or cutscenes to give you more content or small 4th wall breaks. It’s endearing to see you so excited and flustered when they do.

Self aware Dmc where they eventually grow possessive of you, their dear player and want your attention all to themselves. How could they not, you’re just so sweet and caring towards them even if they’re just fictional characters to you. You treat and talk them like they could reply to your remarks (and they desperately want to. How they wish they could)

TRAPEZIUM PROLOGUE.

you thought it to be a blessing to finally have all the devil may cry games on one console. all downloaded and installed and ready to play. not once noticing that something always seems a little off.

You were far from blessed, far from being lucky, and far from finding that sweet spot where you aren’t eternally suffering from the tortuous 8 to 5 and hastily enjoying the sweet comforts of your apartment between the hours of 6 pm to 7am. But hey, anything to get your parents off your back for a lifetime or two. Though, despite your personal troubles, you did have ways to enjoy yourself. One of the ways you had found was plopping down in your lounge chair, kicking back, and turning on your console – waking it from sleep mode.

“Wonder if the games fully downloaded.”

When your console booted up and you clicked on your profile so that the home screen appeared, you let out a small cheer when you all the Devil May Cry games have successfully downloaded while mentally thanking whatever god was out there for not letting any errors pop up during the install.

Smiling to yourself, you clicked on the first game. Thanks to the games being remastered for the new console, you were excited to see the new graphics. Finally, you didn’t have to pull out your old console and dust off the chewed through power cable in hopes that it would run your old games.

You immediately pressed play on the first game, it was the weekend, you were on vacation, you were getting paid while on vacation, and you had no plans anywhere or with anyone. For once, you could finally relax and replay the games you fell in love with when you were younger.

“Then, once I replay through these, I can finally play DMC5. Mannn, I haven’t gotten to try it out yet. I didn’t even know it existed until a few days ago.”

Getting comfortable in your chair, you threw your legs over the armrest and sat sideways, eyes focused on the screen as the game finally started.

Dante, all the while, felt how taut his muscles were as if he was stretching after a seriously long nap. You were back. Took you long enough.

Dante could remember when he first heard you. Truth be told, he wasn’t always “self aware,” in fact, if he was being honest, then he didn’t even know you existed until the second playthrough you did in the first game on your old, beat up ps3.

While you were playing, unbeknownst to him, he had gotten a strong sense of deja vu when he was playing through the story, and then there was the little echo every now and again. An echo that became more and more prominent that sometimes he would intentionally not say a line just to hear another voice say instead.

“Jackpot!”

Definitely not his voice, and he knew he wasn’t going crazy.

“Aww, he didn’t say it after the move combo this time…”

Move combo?

It wasn’t until a cutscene played through that he saw you. A snot-nosed brat, eyes glued to the TV as you stood in front of it with your hands gripping the controller. You, in layman’s terms, were a dork. A dork who he got to know over years of multiple play throughs and new title releases. A dork who wasn’t actually a dork, but just a girl who learned to pick herself up despite everything going against her.

Much like how you saw his life, he also saw yours. Granted, he only saw snippets where you saw (almost) everything, but it still counted for something. He saw you start crying because you bombed a social studies test, watched you get grounded and yelled at for something you didn’t do, watch you make an “oh shit” face when you realized you hadn’t done your chores for the night when your parents pulled into the driveway. He also saw your struggles in college if only for a moment before you took a long, long break from playing video games.

Now, at the beginning, he did try to ignore your voice, your struggles, you. But he found that to be nearly impossible as he enjoyed your company since you saw what most others didn’t. Besides, it wasn’t like it was always serious. You cheered for him during fights (which you were in control of, but cheered nonetheless especially during a tough battle) and also took your time to ogle and gush over him. Though, he could also remember your panicked voice when you were running him around after he got hit because you weren’t paying attention…

But whatever, you were finally back, and since you were finally here again it was time he and everyone else got to work too.

Since your disappearance, many had agreed to try to find a way to bring you to their world. To their reality. To you, they were fictional characters, but to them this was real. Besides, he was at least 43% certain you would enjoy hanging out with him, then going to some lame job all the time (which he was proud of you for, of course!). The last time he saw you, you were in the deep throws of college while looking like you were about to have a mental breakdown. So to see you again, with your own apartment and having your own job, well, it was cool to see.

Besides, you looked like you needed an escape anyway, and if there was a way to bridge hell to earth with a stupid ass portal, then there was definitely a way to get to your world from here too. The only problem was how to find it or how to create it.

Faintly he could hear you say “this party is getting crazy, let’s rock!”

He laughed a little as you both continued through the story line of the first game well into the night. And it wasn’t until your clock red 4am did you finally start nodding off. Stretching, you saved a new game file and exited the game. Even if you were on vacation, you knew that sleep was still important (along with actually remembering to eat breakfast).

Meanwhile, Dante tossed an old relic onto a table in front of everyone the moment the game closed, and he turned into his “present self.”

He and the others found a way to bring you to their world. Though there were a few problems. One of the main concerns being … no one was sure what time frame you would end up in or where you would teleport to. The demons they had to bargain with (and later kill) in order to find this relic weren’t exactly helpful in explaining its use. All they would offer is that it would bring you to their world albeit with consequences. Which was the next question. Was the risk worth it? It was your life they were putting on the line after all.

It wasn’t like any of them had time to digest the question thoroughly before the wall exploded and a fight broke out. A few demons making a dash for them while others were making a break for the relic on the table.

So, who knows? Maybe at the end of the day, some things were just meant to happen.

I'd hate to add to my 50+ fanfiction ideas to write on Ao3 that I've made absolutely no progress on, but finding out about "Self-aware!DMC" has worsened the brainrot. It's difficult to not imagine a self-aware Vergil traversing to every other electronic device in the house that's on the same wifi network because you keep unplugging devices to ignore him. Or Dante refusing to move in-game if you've been playing for way too long without a break. Or Nero stubbornly taking over because you suck at Devil May Cry 4/5 and keep getting him hurt.

Self aware!Vergil HCS

Most likely this will be another severe trauma for Vergil's psyche.

He went through a difficult childhood, and the realization that his whole life is not real ... would cut him from the inside.

All his goals were meaningless...

He realizes that someone controls him. Points out the right path, even if he may experience pain on it.

There is some kind of glitch, and he sees your face, and hears your voice.

He is stunned.

You were the one who guided him along the way...

First you remark that Vergil is tense about something. You didn't remember DMC 5 having this wait animation. However, we decided not to dwell on this special attention.

Vergil begins to slowly break the 4th wall. Carefully, slowly, and not wanting to scare.

He just wants to see if you can help him get out of this fake world...

And in the end, he is interested in getting to know you better.

Another thing I want to mention, is that the players appearance or gender is up to you! Hence why I keep their looks so vague and keep any works or drabbles I do gender neutral.

Dante Sparda- sweetheart or little sweetheart. I feel like it’s a classic, and that it suits his character over all. You cannot convince me otherwise that Dante wouldn’t be the type to say -either as a joke or to flirt- “Hello sweetheart~” or something similar. But also because he sees the player as a sweetheart due to their behavior towards him. He’d never forget the first time he’d felt your guidance in Mallet island. It was weird yet not hostile at all. You weren’t that type of person. It wasn’t until he first killed Phantom that he heard your voice. A simple “Good job Dante! We did it! Or rather you did…a-anyway-“ He almost melted, you sounded so sheepish…how sweet. What a pretty little thing…you always worried so much and always tried to makes sure he didn’t get hurt much. Considering he’s been with them the longest -something that he wastes no opportunity to brag about to everyone else- calling you a sweetheart is fitting. You truly were a sweetheart…his and his alone. It’s a shame he had to share you with everyone though.

“Welcome back, sweetheart! I’m itching to show off my ski- uh, I mean to get my hands on some devils! Let’s get this party started, shall we?”

Vergil Sparda- dearest angel or my dear. Contrary to his little brother, Vergil is much more formal, if that makes sense. Though that doesn’t mean he isn’t just as corny or as lovey dovey, either. He sees the player as an angel, mostly because he himself is a devil. And what better way to see the very person who’s looked after him and given him the kindness befitting a being of purity, then as an angel? That’s what you looked and seemed like when he first heard you after all. As he journeyed through Fortuna, he heard your voice -your sweet and admittedly nervous little voice- while he eventually surrendered full control to you. The enemies seemed stronger than he imagined but under your guidance, it was child’s play. Despite your nervousness and squeamish behavior, you were skilled. He wished you had more confidence in yourself and your ability to play, his dearest angel. As for “my dear”, he thinks it’s rather simple. It’s because you’re very dear to him…and because it sounds formal yet loving. Something he’d like to sound for you. You always seemed to fawn over his -or any- gentlemanly behavior, after all.

“Hello, my dear…now now, don’t be so discouraged. You did wonderfully…let’s try again shall we? I’m sure you’ll do better this time with me as your vessel…that’s right. Guide the way, my dearest angel”

Nero Sparda and Kyrie- angel and snow drop. Now these two are special. They didn’t separate or argue with one another once they realized they’re interest for the player. Rather they agreed to share them between the two, hence why they also share the same nicknames for them! In Nero’s case, like father like son, he sees the player as an angel, but for different reasons. Like Kyrie, he’d been raised with the Order of the Sword and in a world of devils, seeing a pure soul like yours is a breath of fresh air. And besides what better nickname is there for the very person who’s guided him and looked after them for so long with such care and affection, but as an angel? So he started calling you his angel, with Kyrie adopting the nickname shortly after. As for Kyrie, while she agreed with Nero’s idea and reasoning to call you their angel, she had a nickname for you herself! She always saw you as someone delicate -and perhaps even sensitive- considering how emotional you always seemed to be during any cutscenes and your overall personality so she couldn’t help but see you like a flower. You certainly were as beautiful as one. So she came up with Snow drop! The flower itself was white, untouched like an angel and with the meaning of hope behind it…safe to say, Nero catches on to Kyrie’s train of thought too.

“Nero, look! They’re here again!” “Yeah, I can see them Kyrie.” “Do you think they’ll choose you again this time?” “Who knows? It’s good to see them again, though…” “Welcome back, angel…our dearest Snow drop”

Trish- little spark. Now as for Trish, she’s one who unfortunately hasn’t gotten the chance to see you very often. Only getting to see you during her time with Dante in Mallet Island and during the events of Fortuna and the whole scandal with the Order of the Sword, and the whole mess with V and Vergil. Seeing how careful and kind you were with Dante made her curious, wondering who you were and why show them so much concern and love despite not knowing them. But then over time, that curiosity turned into jealousy. Why did she never get much of the spotlight and a chance to be with you like those stupid spawns of Sparda? But when she was in Fortuna with Lady, she finally found her chance. And her jealousy subsided…if not for a moment…you were electrifying. Your control -no that was too harsh for your kind demeanor- your guidance was a shock. Nothing like that thunder she wielded so skillfully. She loved it. Your smile, your concern over her, the way you beamed and laughed in excitement when you got a taste of her fighting style. It was a damn drug. And so she thought the name little spark was fitting for you.

“If it isn’t my little spark…you really enjoy playing with me don’t you? Hm…then I better go all out. I’m sure you’d enjoy seeing me at my true potential, wouldn’t you?”

Lady- doll or little doll/dolly. Like Trish, Lady was jealous that someone like Vergil and Dante -that annoying, sleazy, debt collecting devil hunter him- got so much attention from you. Hell, even that stupid kid from the order got more time with you!! And she’s known you longer! Whatever, in any case, when she finally got her turn with you in Fortuna, she was both exasperated and excited. Y’know, she still remembered when she saw you for the first time. When she rolled up on her motorcycle to Temen ni gru, she heard a voice -your voice to be exact- say something peculiar. “Oh my gosh, it’s Lady!! She looks so cool!!” Lady?? That wasn’t her name…but considering how things were, she didn’t want to go by her real name. But why Lady?? You seemed to know her by that name…maybe you knew who she was but chose to go by Lady instead for…whatever reason. It wasn’t until she saw you again when she and Dante were killing demons together for the first time that she understood why you called her Lady…even though she knew Dante was the one who made the name Lady “cannon”, she likes to think you gave her the name first. It was the first time she fully took you in too. You looked like a little doll sitting on that bed of yours. Those stuffed animals of yours only added to that comparison. You’d always be her little dolly to her.

“Hey, doll! What d’ya say we show these devils who’s boss huh? I’m clearly the best devil hunter for the job anyway…you think so too, don’t you, little dolly?”

Nicoletta Goldstein- Tinker bell. Now, since Nico doesn’t really get a chance to play or experience your control over her like Nero, Dante and V do, she only knows you through them -mostly Nero specifically since he seemed to have the most missions- but you seemed like a cute little thing! You also seemed to like her a lot and really enjoyed seeing her creations too! If she had to say, she’d bet her best weapons that if you’d be with them, you’d offer to help around her lil’ station however you could. Considering how much you helped and saved the boys asses, this little assumption of hers probably wouldn’t be so far off. Hence why she dubbed you Tinker bell! And if you just so happened to share any physical or personality traits like the actual character, that’d only serve to back up her little nickname for ya! She could just imagine having you help around the van clear as day! Handing her any tools she’d need, pass a cigarette or two before getting told off by Nero for being a bad influence on you -and triggering your allergies…sorry Tinker bell- and who knows? Maybe you’d like to learn a thing or two from her! She’d be more than happy to do so!

“Hey Tinker bell! What d’ya need from yours truly?…oh fuck off Nero, I know they can’t hear me, but hey! At least they know to trust my judgment when it comes to getting your stuff, huh? Smart little thing, aren’t they?”

V- my muse and my darling. V, although one who unfortunately couldn’t spend much time with you, enjoyed what little he could. He saw you as a muse, ever present in his sight -when he was in your control, a familiar and almost foreign sensation now that he’s not fully himself at the moment- and mind. He saw you as a source of inspiration and as an end goal. Your beauty drew the sweetest words, just for you….even if he had to share with his familiars. But he’s made it this far despite everything, and now that you were here with him, that only strengthened his resolve. He’d see this through and be whole again. He swore it. As for “my darling”, he simply thought you’d like it. You seemed the hopeless romantic, and you certainly were a darling little thing yourself so the term was appropriate for you.

“Hello, my darling…ah. Cooing over Shadow again, I see. Let’s continue, shall we? My eternal muse…”

Self Aware Dmc!! - Seeing their little darling cry for the first time!

Hi hi!!! I’ve had this idea in my head for a WHIIIIIILEEE now so I’m finally getting to it! This oneshot mostly takes place in Dmc3 and as usual, I’m mostly basing it on my own experiences!…and it’s a long oneshot…anyway- do you guys like Nevan? I think she’s neat 😇

Pink dialogue- two people thinking or speaking at the same time

You were a very sensitive person, Dante concluded, feeling your growing frustration and dejectedness as you struggled to beat Cerberus.

“Easy mode unlocked…? Oh fuck off, I can do this!” He heard you grumbled, snickering quietly at your attitude and muttering a small encouragement under his breath.

“Atta sweetheart…you got this”

And soon enough you did, he grinned to himself as he heard you cheer while you watched him play with the newly attained nunchucks. See? He knew you could do it! Just had to get a hand of the controls, that’s all.

This concern resurfaced once more later on when the two of you encountered Nevan. Hearing you squeal over him and her as he flirted with her playfully.

Did you really have to fawn over her too? I mean he could agree she was hot but c’mon sweetheart, he’s right there! He could be way better than some batty opera singer!

Nevan, though, raised a brow…you were cute little thing. If you were with the spawn of Sparda, you’d certainly be worth looking into…you were easy on the eyes too. And your voice was as beautiful as you were, having listened to you sing during your failed attempts at taking her down…she wouldn’t mind singing for you, sugar.

The concern started setting in once you started getting quiet after trying to fight her for an hour. Even with your little music playing, you couldn’t make it pass the first phase and it only made you more dejected. You didn’t even sing, make any swooning comments about the two, or yelp and panic when you made Dante barely dodge an attack or get hit anymore.

When Dante fell in battle once more after another hour, he couldn’t help feel your disappointment. Not at him but at yourself. He looked at Nevan for a moment, seeing her own hint of concern in her eyes at your current state.

“…maybe I’ll just try again tomorrow…it’s late…sorry Dante..” They heard you mutter, Dante quickly feeling your absence once you left the game.

“Oh sweetheart…” He muttered, sighing as he sat down on the ground and looked at the bat demoness. He had a feeling he’d be here for a while so why not chat with her?

“…so how long have you sung for?”

The red haired demoness across from him rose a brow in faint amusement, interested in the young man’s start for a conversation but she saw no harm indulging. It’s not like she was fighting him out of a grudge or anything like that.

By the time you had returned, the two had already developed a sense of grudging respect towards the other. And Nevan managed to get the information she wanted of the person she saw briefly, now understanding it was you behind that faint but powerful aura radiating off the young devil hunter.

“Alright Nevan…round two…” They heard you murmur, Dante sighing quietly in contentment as he felt your presence embrace him again. Though he wished he could’ve helped you cheer up a bit. Knowing -and feeling- that you were still dejected about your constant losses the day before. He knew you could take down the wannabe Jessica Rabbit, he was sure of it! “…ready Dante?”

‘Ready as ever sweetheart!’ He thought, readying himself for as many fights as you needed.

“This party’s getting crazy…! Let’s rock!”

And lo and behold, just an hour later you were able to beat the demoness, both you and Dante letting out a cheer as you both landed the final blow. The demoness letting out a small smile of her own…you did fight hard for this with the little devil hunter, after all. She couldn’t help that she grew fond of you.

“LETS GOOOO! HAHA! YEAH WE DID IT!” You laughed, briefly letting go off the control for a moment as the cutscene played out. Watching as your hands shook, and letting out a nervous chuckle at that. “Oh shit my hands are shaking…lmao, skill issue-“

‘Sweetheart, no-‘ ‘Sugar, no-‘ the two characters thought, sweat dropping slightly at that information before looking at each other. Dante holding the demoness in his arms, as she extended her hand to his cheek and down his chest.

“All right…I’ll help you. Your father was a handsome devil…but you’re no slouch yourself.” She smirked, before leaning in close and whispering in his ear so it wouldn’t reach your ears. She wouldn’t blow his cover after all.

“Plus, I’ve got my eye on the little sugar too, y’know? They’re too sweet…it’s quite selfish of you not to share, don’t you think, little devil hunter?”

Dante scowled, watching as she transformed into a devil arm and ceased to talk…how convenient. Maybe she knew that if she stayed as she was for a moment longer he’d rip her to shreds. Cutscene be damned.

….but maybe a little guitar solo wouldn’t hurt-

And so he jammed out, enjoying your cheerful and beaming reaction as the two enjoyed your victory while he rocked out on the old stage.

“You seem to be in a bad mood” Dante smirked as he entered the room, observing his brother’s scowl as he corrected him on the ritual’s procedures.

“Oh hey! There’s the mission number in the back! Yay, that’s so cool! Oh my fucking god. When the little details are little detailing, I love that-“ You fawned, missing the lovesick grin of the boy in red and and the small smirk of the demon in blue. How cute. You really were a sucker for these things huh?

Dante pointed Rebellion at his brother as he waited for a response. “I’m sure you have time for one more game, right?”

Vergil started to unsheath Yamato, stopping halfway through before conceding. “…why not? After all, we share the same blood.” He began to summon his new devil arm, the gauntlets glowing on his hands as he got into stance and smirked back at his younger brother.

“I’ll just use more of yours to undo daddy’s little spell”

“WHAAAAAAAT?????” The brothers heard you exclaim, sensing your surprise as the cutscene ended. “Also what the fuck??? Vergil saying daddy is crazy. Crazy? I was crazy once- okay ya. I gotta focus-“

Dante snickered under his breath, rolling his shoulder while the older twin rolled his eyes, his face growing slightly red at the remark you just made. Both twins preparing themselves for the fight ahead.

However something told Dante that he should worry about you, causing Vergil to raise a brow faintly at his brother’s shift in expression. He knew his younger brother wasn’t concerned about the fight ahead…so what could it be about? You, perhaps? You had fought against him with his little brother before so aside from the increase in difficulty, he didn’t think there was anything else to worry about….

Until he saw you take a moment from the fight.

He watched as you turned your head away from the death screen as you took a quiet but shaky breath and seeing Dante’s worried expression.

“…Dante, are they..?”

“I-I dunno, bro…they-“

“I’m fine” Your voice cut them off unknowingly, though you looked rather dejected. Having a sulk on your face…though considering you’d been fighting the older son of Sparda for almost three hours and hadn’t beaten him yet and only managing to get past his judgement cut phase once, they could understand why you’d look so down.

“No…I got this…maybe, I’ll take a shower first. Take a breath and try again..! Yeah” They heard you mutter before you left them alone. Leaving them to stare at each other…though admittedly Dante was still somewhat dead on the floor.

“…so how’s the weather?”

“Are you seriously doing this right now?-“

By the time you’d come back, they had been bickering for at least ten minutes now, watching as you started the fight once more with a small frown. It took you at least another hour to beat the fight but the sight of your expression from earlier never left their minds.

….if that’s how you reacted to this confrontation, would you be okay in their final fight?

This question wouldn’t plague their minds until the moment actually arrived, Vergil staring down at his brother’s wounded body on the water before they both heard something that made them tense and look up in your direction…a sniffle.

You were…crying?

“…damn it…fuck, this is so stupid…but..” You had let go off your controller but right now, they didn’t need it to feel your current dejection and frustration. “I can’t…I can’t do it..! I’ve been fighting him for two hours and I still…I can’t even get him down halfway…! I’m never gonna make it!” They heard your voice crack during your murmurs, watching as you wiped your eyes with your sleeves to clean your tears.

Hearing your shaky murmurs and small sniffles made them want to break the code and comfort you…but they couldn’t. Staring at you hopelessly before staring at each other. There must’ve been something they could do even then, couldn’t they?

“…don’t give up, my dear…please” Vergil found himself whispering without thinking, his whisper actually becoming audible. His younger brother following along with a small whisper of his own.

“Yeah sweetheart…how about we try one more time, huh? Verge here ain’t that scary, I promise..” He cooed softly, ignoring the brief glare he received in response.

The two perked up as you looked at the screen again, your eyes puffy and glossy with tears as you decided to restart the cutscene before the fight. Letting out little sniffles or whimper as you tried to swallow back any cries while you tried to attack.

You are so beautiful. You truly are, but the sight of your tears and the small noises you made was something else for them. It was a mix of hating to see you so sad over the game and finding your teary state endearing.

But their concern for you overcame their current adoration, Dante giving it his all and almost taking control himself during the fight. Allowing you to do more combos and damage than you were allowed to.

And Vergil?

He let himself be barraged with hit after hit. That’s not to say he didn’t fight back, but it wasn’t as fiercely. Like he was holding back for you…Dante didn’t mention it. He knew his brother was an actual softy deep down and that extended to you….and it also made the fight easier so that’s also a plus-

“Wait…I’m doing it…? Oh my gosh, I’m doing it..!” You murmured before shaking your head. “No no…don’t get too excited…you might jinx it..”

‘Sweetheart…’ Dante thought, sighing in slight exasperation at your self deprecating comment. His older brother only frowning in agreement as you landed the final blow and he fell to his knees.

“I…I did it! We did it Dante! Yeah haha!” You cheered shakily, beaming down at the characters as the cutscene of the aftermath played out.

They were so proud of you. Even if they had to tweak the game a little, they’d do anything to make sure you wouldn’t cry like that again. As to whether you heard their faint encouragement earlier, they’d never know. But they had a small feeling in the back of your head that you did…

“…oh shit, my hands are shaking so much. Ahaha oh my gosh-“

I can’t help but imagine how funny it would be tho if reader modded the game. Like the characters expect things to go as usual but suddenly Dante is in a maid dress, Vergil has the plastic chair and Nero is shirtless or smth.

Like their trying to keep a straight face and act according ten script but Dante is a few moments away from breaking at seeing Vergil sitting ominously on a plastic lawn chair with the Yamato now also changed to look like an anime body pillow.

You’d never thought about using mods, and neither did the cast think you would. It wasn’t until you a friend of yours convinced you to and helped you install them that you managed to do so and once you did, the cast noticed a few…interesting changes. Like for example:

“…Dante…why are you in a maid dress??” Nero asked, staring at his uncle in great confusion as they met outside Urizen’s throne while ignoring Lady and Trish laughing at them. He wasn’t wearing that in the last time you started the game started, was he??

“You tell me, kid…why are you in a wedding dress? Did ‘ya leave Kyrie and the little sweetheart at the altar?” The younger son of Sparda shot back with a smirk, though he was just as confused as anyone else. Why a maid dress of all things?! And why was the shirt so fucking short?!

…though he could admit, the thigh highs suited him…maybe his little sweetheart’s sense of style wasn’t all that bad. Not that he doubted them.

“Oh shut up, old man. At least my dress looks better. You look like a stripper” Nero sneered, huffing as he fixed the sweetheart collar of his dress. He didn’t know how he’d fight in this stupid gown but he guess it wasn’t that bad. At least it wasn’t ugly…he just didn’t want to think about Nico’s reaction to this.

Meanwhile, V was struggling to deal with his familiars. Griffon specifically because the stupid bird wouldn’t stop laughing at him.

“BAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! Nice outfit, doll! HA-!!” The bird guffawed, much to the man’s embarrassment. He supposed it wasn’t bad, the outfit itself was rather elegant…in a dollish sense. Lolita, was it? The black and white dress was frilly but oddly elegant and refined. The parasol it included wasn’t so awful either…it suited his style…if he was a woman.

Of course, Lady and Trish weren’t off the hook either but their outfits weren’t as embarrassing to wear as it was for the three men. The two women were dressed in suits, with Lady having the sleeves of her dress shirt rolled up and Trish fully keeping her outfit in a more classier way. You really had a knack for playing dress up, didn’t you?

“Lo-…looking good Dante…” Lady snickered, barely calming down from her laughing fit as Trish smirked in the behind her.

“She’s right y’know? The little spark didn’t do half bad with our outfits” Trish pointed out with an amused huff, fixing her gold tie as she adjusted her collar.

“Yeah yeah, whatever. Laugh it up you two” The legendary devil hunter grumbled before letting out a sigh and picking up Rebellion. “Welp, no use in thinking too much of this. We got a show to run” Dante sighed, ignoring Nero’s protests in the back as the game picked off from where you left off.

The game was almost over, and boy was Dante tired. Fighting in this maid dress was…something. The small heels didn’t help either. But at this point, he couldn’t help but wonder if his brother would be wearing something too.

‘Welp, I’m almost at the top anyway…guess I’ll find out soon enough’ He thought, walking up to the top of the demonic tree before seeing his silhouette in the distance.

“Yo Vergil! Your portal opening days are over!…Give me the Yama-“ He stopped himself as he finally registered his brother’s appearance.

First of all, Vergil was sitting on a plastic lawn chair unlike the small throne he made of his own originally, he was holding a body pillow of some anime girl instead of the Yamato and to top it all of? He was wearing a bunny suit. Bunny ears, tail, heels, fishnets stockings and all.

Before Dante could say a word -like both brothers knew he would- Vergil quickly adjusted the games code so that the current cutscene would continue like normal for you. And just in time too because as soon as he did, Dante burst out laughing.

“HA- what?! What are you wearing there, big bro?! Gonna hop on over here?! Gonna pillow fight me to death?! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!” Dante guffawed, now completely losing any embarrassment he felt over wearing this silly maid outfit. Especially after seeing what his brother was wearing.

“Shut up. What about you, huh? Going to sweep me off with a little broom, little brother? Clean up my mess like a good little maid?” Vergil sneered, though he himself was horribly embarrassed. This stupid suit didn’t cover much of anything! Just what were you thinking with these mods?! The fact that everyone else wasn’t spared from these outfits changes like him was the only thing that helped him power through this…he much preferred the black dress he had as V. At least he was properly covered in that.

“Oh fuck off, I look amazing. You’re just jealous of me” Dante smirked, though he was a bit irked from his remarks.

“Let’s fight-“

And after a few failed attempts of fighting and dying to Vergil -fighting him with both Dante and then Nero (who got sent a raised eyebrow from his father and in return, got a muffled guffaw from his son after seeing their respective outfits), and as the credits rolled, all they heard from you was-

“…I have nothing to say for myself. I don’t regret a single thing and I would do this again…just like I’d do them in those outfits. They’re so fine, good lord-“
