Vase, cloisonné enamel and silver wire (ca. 1893)

Gisaburo Tsukamoto and Kihioye Hayashi crafted this monumental cloisonné vessel for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

The vase functions as a diplomatic bridge, blending Japanese craftsmanship with Western political symbolism. Two eagles reference Russia, and the silver stars and red-and-white bands at the vase neck pay tribute to the American flag. As part of the largest cloisonné garniture ever produced, it remains a pinnacle of Meiji period technical and symbolic ambition. Loc. Khalili Collections. Dim. 172 cm H (67 3/4 in.).

It was quiet at work today because of the oncoming blizzard, so I made this. It's inspired by an antique blue glass and silver wire tree that's been in my family since the early 1900's.
