I make It So Easy
Spencer Agnew x Fem!Reader
Smosh Cast x Reader
Synopsis: Reader has been working at Smosh for years / like since about 2013. She started as a writer before joining in front of the camera in 2017 after becoming a fan favorite. She secretly writes songs when she can’t figure out her emotions. And one thing has been on her mind for months.
Her best friend saying she’s the kind of person that would be easy to fall in love with
So she writes a song…
It started as most things at Smosh do, with a bit. A joke, a silly little comment.
And that’s all it would have been, except the fans clipped it. And now you can’t even look at your phone without seeing it. That stupid 15 second clip of your best friend was slowly ruining your life. And to make matters worse, he doesn’t even seem to remember saying it.
To paint a picture, it was a live stream. Spencer was playing some game you couldn’t remember, with Angela and Amanda. Amanda had made a joke about Spencer being her Smosh crush and Angela was quick to reply. Saying and this is a direct quote.
“How is Spencer your Smosh crush when Y/N exists, like Y/N/N, step on me please.”
That part wasn’t really a surprise. You and Angela flirted with each other on camera all the time. Hell, fans shipped the two of you almost as much as they shipped Angela and Amanda. The problem or rather the incident happened immediately after. When Spencer, without missing a beat said:
“Yeah, that’s makes sense. Like she’s my best friend but it’s like so easy to fall in love with her. Ya’ know? Y/n has this sunlight kind of energy that just pulls you in and warms you in a way I’ve never experienced before. Like she’s this amazing person and I’m so lucky to know her.”
He said this, without pause. Without a single ounce of hesitation, he barely even looked up from the game he was playing. And of course, everyone had a field day with the clip. It wasn’t even just fans! Your own co-workers, your friends sent it to you. Spencer’s mother, sent it to you!
In fact the only one would wasn’t talking about it, was Spencer himself. Normally when you had a problem like this, he was the one you went to. But this was different, you couldn’t go to Spencer to talk about Spencer. And it felt wrong to go to anyone else, so you wrote a song.
For three weeks, that clip played over and over in your head. You couldn’t even figure out why it had bothered you so much. You guys said ‘I love you’ all the time. If fact you barely registered it, until right now. Sitting in your living room with Angela, Arasha, and Courtney. Amanda had been invited but opted to have a night in with her family and Olivia was on a date with her boyfriend.
Your song book open in Angela’s lap as the other two read over her shoulder. Normally you wouldn’t just bust out your song book, but you were all about 3.5 glasses of wine in. And you really wanted someone’s opinion on the new song since you couldn’t exactly show Spencer.
“What did you say?” You asked confused causing the three of them to laugh softly.
“I asked who are you in love with.” Arasha repeated and you frowned.
‘In love?’ You weren’t in love. You would know if you were in love, wouldn’t you?
“I’m not in-it’s just a song.” You denied while leaning over to grab your book and set down your wine glass.
“Baby, this is like the sweetest love song I’ve ever heard. If you aren’t in love then you at least love someone a whole hell of a lot.” Courtney pointed out and you looked down at the lyrics for a moment. Studying them as if you were truly seeing them for the first time.
“You obviously don’t have to decide right now, but I’m sure whoever this is about would be the luckiest person ever.” Angela murmured reassuringly, causing you to smile.
The topic had changed but the conversation sat in the front of your thoughts for the rest of the night. Were they right? Had you actually fallen in love and just never realized it? You’d heard of people saying they just woke up one day and knew. But you always assumed there would be signs. Tells that would let you know you’d fallen in love and that they’d fallen too.
But with Spencer? Well the more you thought about it, the more you realized you had always loved him. Been in love with him.
“Hey.” Spencer greeted walking over to you desk bright an early in Monday morning. You smiled, saving the script you were working on before looking up at him.
“Hi Spence. Good weekend?” You asked while grabbing the coffee he held out for you. Three days a week Spencer would stop on his way in to work and buy you a coffee. Even though he never bought anything for himself and rarely drank coffee. In return you kept the mini fridge under your desk shocked with Kickstart.
“Would have been better if my best friend wasn’t radio silent all weekend. We were supposed to go to the movies on Saturday, remember?” He reminded you with a raised brow and you grimaced.
“Oh shoot, I’m so sorry. I just wasn’t feeling to great and I-“
“Are you sick? Did you catch that bug Tommy had last week? Hang on, I have a…” He rambled before going over to his desk across the room. You studied him in confusion as he sat his bag down before rummaging through his drawer.
“Here it is.” He smiled proudly as he held up a forehead thermometer. Quickly walking back to you.
“I’m not sick Spencer. I was just…” You paused trying to think of what to say. You couldn’t exactly tell him you spent the weekend realizing you were in love with him. That’s a lot for 6:45 in a Monday.
“Just?” He pressed, studying you for a moment. The thermometer still hanging loosely from his hand.
“Tired. I was exhausted and I didn’t really feel like going out.” You shrugged, it was a lame excuse. You spent all weekend trying to figure out your feelings and what you would say to him and that’s all you could come up with.
“Oh, well…did you get some sleep at least? You weren’t spending the weekend writing, right?” He asked almost knowingly and your eyes widened.
“Writing?” You repeated almost panicked earning a suspicious look from him.
“The script outline?…The one you’ve been working on for weeks.” He elaborated as if it was obvious
“Oh! Um, no. I wasn’t working on it at all.” You awkwardly muttered, your eyes shifting around the room as you looked for a way out of this conversation. Mentally that worried you. In all the time you’d known Spencer, you never wanted to stop talking to him.
Constantly seeking him out. Giving him your full undivided attention whenever you could. Wanting to spend any second of free time you had, with him. And now within a span of 72 hours, you couldn’t help but want to avoid him. Afraid of what your recent revelations might do to your relationship. To your friendship.
Spencer had been one of the best friends you had ever had and you weren’t ready to lose that. But this, being in love with him…that changed a lot of things.
“So I was thinking for lunch today we could-“
“Actually!” You said much louder than necessary as you cut him off.
“I was gonna work on my script outline during lunch so I’ll have to skip our Monday routine.” You lied causing his eyes to widen. Every Monday the two of you would pick a random spot of lunch and have a car picnic. You’d been doing it for years, never missing a week.
“Skip? I um…are we okay?” He asked nervously and you immediately nodded. Of course you were okay, better than okay. You just needed time to get over him and then things would go back to normal.
“Yeah, yeah of course. I’m just so behind on work and I’d hate for it to put everything off. Can’t film scripted videos without the script.” You muttered, turning back to your computer so he wouldn’t be able to see your face.
You always hated lying to Spencer, mostly because he could always tell. But also because there was never really a point. You told each other everything big or small. But this…this seemed like it was too big to share.
“Ok…I’ll let you get back to work then.” He muttered in a tone that told you he absolutely didn’t believe you but was too polite to call you out on it.
You didn’t look at him again as he stood there for a moment before sighing and walking away.
“So…” Arasha smirked appearing out of nowhere as she leaned against your desk. You jumped at her sudden appearance and looked up at her.
“What?” You muttered avoiding eye contact as you typed nonsense on the screen.
“That song you showed us…it’s about Spencer, isn’t it?” She asked causing you to freeze immediately.
“What?” You slowly met her eyes to see the thrilled look on her face. In seconds you were on your feet dragging her to an empty conference room. Locking the door behind you.
“Arasha….” You started to say and she gasped
“Oh my god is it actually? I was just making a joke. But you! You like Spencer-“ She started to say before you put a hand over her mouth.
“Arasha you can’t tell anyone, okay. This is so bad! Like sooooooo bad.” You grimaced causing her to frown as she pulled your hand away from her face.
“What’s so bad about having feelings for Spencer? He’s great.”
“Yeah he is, I know he is. He’s my best friend. I just…falling in love with Spencer wasn’t planned I just…I need time to figure out what that means.” Sighing you let your gaze fall from her concerned eyes to the floor. Arasha walked backwards before sitting on top of the table as she studied you. A small smile appearing on her face.
“Falling in love?” She repeated causing your eyes to widen as you hadn’t been able to say it out loud before this moment.
“I-yeah. I guess. Falling or already on the ground.” You shrugged painfully with a heavy sigh.
“You don’t think he feels the same way?” She questioned running her fingers through her hair as if she was in deep thought about something.
“More like scared to think about it. Love and relationships aren’t something I’ve ever been good at. And if I fuck it up or something goes wrong, I’d lose him. I’m not ready for that possibility.” You confessed. For close to a decade you two have been Y/N and Spencer, best friends. You weren’t ready for that to change even if deep down you might secretly want it to.
“Before I become like emotionally invested in this…is this a bit? Because you and Spencer would be perfect for each other and I really need this to be real.” She all but begged and you couldn’t stop the laughter that fell from your lips.
“I wish it was a bit. Then maybe I wouldn’t be so nervous to talk to my best friend.” You groaned miserably causing Arasha to immediately stand and hug you.
“Hey, you might not want to hear this now. But Spencer likes you too and the two of you will figure this out.” She whispered softly with her arms wrapped tightly around you. You let out a deep breath and nodded.
“I really hope you’re right.”
It was finally Friday again and you couldn’t be happier. You’d successfully managed to avoid Spencer through pitch meetings, video shoots, and live stream rehearsals. Was it the best plan? Absolutely not. In fact it was literally tearing you apart inside but you didn’t know what else to do.
Now, sitting on your couch with a cup of tea. You were miserably watching the latest Gentlemen’s Video while waiting for the food you ordered to arrive.
You laughed at some joke Angela made when you heard a knock at the door. You groaned tossing the pile of blankets off of you as you stood up.
“I’m coming!” You yelled when the person knocked once more, this time more frantic. Muttering curses at yourself you pulled your phone out when the knocking didn’t stop.
You furrowed your brow when you noticed it was Spencer. Then you froze in place, hoping that maybe he’d just leave.
You watched through your phone screen as he softly cursed under his breath. Turning to his ring camera as he pulls his keys out.
“Y/n/n…I’m opening your door. Don’t attack me.” He joked waving his key around. The joke referencing a few years back when you forgot Spencer had a key and he came over in the middle of the night for chips. Let’s just say Spencer has never been worried about you being able to protect yourself again.
You were pulled from your thoughts about the memory when the door opened.
“Y/n?” He called out but froze when he made eye contact with you.
“You’re not sleeping.” He said matter of factly as he closed the door behind him.
“You aren’t the food I ordered.” You countered not knowing what else to say. You two shared a tense moment of eye contact. Spencer trying to read you while you prayed he wouldn’t be able to.
“Y/n, we need to talk.” He insisted, running his hands through his hair.
“Now? I mean we had a movie night planned for tomor-“
“Would you have showed up? Y/n, we haven’t talked all week. You didn’t even want to have lunch with me on Monday. Monday!” He stressed the word, his eyes frantically searching your face. Nonverbally putting emphasis on how much those lunches meant to him.
“Spence-“
“It’s like every room I walked into you ran out of it. For a week, so just…tell me what I did. Tell me what I did and I swear to you I will never do it again. Tell me and I will fix it. Because if I did something wrong, something that irritated you, or god forbid…if I did something that…” He paused blinking his eyes harshly to will his tears away.
“If I did something that hurt you. I’m sorry, I am so so sorry. Please, please tell me what I did wrong.” He begged slowly stepping towards you, like he wanted to hold you but didn’t know if he was allowed.
“Oh Spence…” You whispered reaching out to him. Within seconds he had you in his arms with his head tucked against your shoulder. His soft curls tickling your cheek as he gripped the back of your shirt.
“I’m really sorry Y/n.” He murmured against your neck and you moved to pull away. But he only held you tighter. As if he was afraid you’d tell him to leave, afraid you’d tell him you never wanted to see him again.
The thought of that alone had you spiraling.
“Are you in love with me?” You asked, the words falling out of your mouth like vomit. You froze in place as he pulled back to look at you. As if the visual of your face could possibly help him comprehend the question.
“What?” He asked with wide eyes and you grimaced
“That’s not really how I wanted that to come out it’s just…you said it was easy.” You attempted to explain but words seemed to fail you in a way that you’d never experienced before. You’re literally a writer for a living and words were suddenly a made up concept. His arms now dropping to his sides, as he just continued to stare at you.
Turning back towards your living room, you walked in and began to pace as he stood in the doorway.
“I-uh, a few weeks ago. I’m sure you don’t even remember it. Honestly it’s probably ridiculous that it even matters so much to me but I just can’t get the clip out of my head. Hell, I wouldn’t be able to forget about it if I tried. It’s literally everywhere.” You sighed running your hands down your face with a frustrated groan.
“What clip? Wait, why wouldn’t it matter? What are you talking about?” Spencer urged, standing from where he’d been leaning against the wall to approach you.
“It’s a stupid-“
“Stop saying that. it’s not stupid. If you care about it, and it matters to you then it’s not stupid.” He muttered cutting you off. You smiled as he grabbed your hand, lacing his fingers with yours.
“Fine, it’s a clip. It’s like 15 seconds and I- maybe I should just show it to you?” You suggested and he immediately nodded so you pulled out your phone and opened TikTok. You went to your favorites, finding the video you seemed to watch constantly. A video that had been sent to you by Arasha.
You then handed him your phone, waiting nervously as he watched it.
The video started slow. The intro was of you two laughing together during a TNTL shoot. The audio first being Only by RY X
It was several clips, and screen recordings of you two. Some of them had been bits but most were times that you two had been in your own world.
Spencer holding your hand during a game of werewolf.
You gently wiping something off his face during an eat it or tweet it video.
Spencer staring at you as you laughed during Damien’s bit city jokes.
Clips of Spencer looking at you after he made a joke as if he was checking to see if you thought it was funny
Then the audio changed to what he had said during the livestream:
‘She’s my best friend but it’s like so easy to fall in love with her. Ya’ know? Y/n has this sunlight kind of energy that just pulls you in and warms you in a way I’ve never experienced before. Like she’s this amazing person and I’m so lucky to know her.”
The clips this time had been mostly the same.
Spencer holding you when you cried during an emotional reedit stories video
A Clip of you two during the summer games. You stood on the field watching everyone run, Spencer stood behind you with his arms around your waist and his chin resting on top of your head.
A clip of you cleaning his glasses during a Gentlemen’s games shoot
The audio went back to the song as a few more clips and screenshots of him admiring you were shown. The video ended and started over as Spencer slowly looked up at you.
“I um…I didn’t mean to say that. Not that I don’t feel it or uh-. It’s not that you aren’t great. You are, you’re amazing. I just, I didn’t mean to say it.” He rambled nervously. The TikTok still playing in his hand. A swell of disappointment filled you. You had a feeling he didn’t mean it but part of you still hoped that maybe he did actually love you too.
“You didn’t mean to say it?” You repeated, reaching to grab your phone. You almost smiled as your fingers brushed against his and he sighed.
“Look, I’m sorry okay? If I could take it back I would. I wasn’t thinking, you know how I get. Sometimes my mouth moves faster than my brain. Which shouldn’t be an excuse! But if I made you uncomfortable, I’m sorry. Even if you weren’t uncomfortable I’m still sorry. I shouldn’t have basically confessed my love for you on the internet without talking to you first.” He stressed, eyes once again searching your face.
“So you do love me?” You smiled.
“I-love-How could I not? You are without a doubt the most amazing person I have ever met. I’m insane about you. I love you in the way that poets would spend centuries writing about. I have never been sure about anything in my life. Constantly second guessing, coasting, relying. But you? You are the only thing I have ever been sure of. The sound of your name puts me at ease. I tell a joke and the only reaction I care about is yours. The sound of your laughter is the best part of my day every time I hear it. I don’t know how it happened or when. And I know this is going to ruin everything and I know how much you hate change and I am so sorry. If I could stop, if I could go back to the day I realized I love you and stop myself from doing it. For your happiness, for your comfort…I’d do it, without question. You mean absolutely everything to me. This past week has been torture, intense agonizing torture. I barely saw you for five days and it felt like my arm was cut from my body. Or like I was walking around headless or some crazy shit like that. It felt like I was walking around with this huge important piece of me just gone. Seeing you run from every room I walked into and not knowing why? Realizing how addicted I had become to you, to your smile. I don’t know when I felt in love with you. But I know that I did. I know that I am in love with you. What I don’t know…is how you feel about it.” He finished breathing heavy as he stared at you with teary eyes.
“I-wow. I um, gosh. Okay.” You stuttered, trying to come up with a response to probably the most beautiful love confession you’d ever heard.
“You don’t have to feel the same way.” He quickly spoke
“Do you remember a few years ago when we went to New York for that Comic Con?” You asked suddenly he smiled immediately and nodded although you could see the confusion in his eyes.
“Yeah, the trip had been a disaster. Half of us didn’t make it because of delayed flights and snow storms. Then the convention got canceled last minute.” He explained which was true. Damien had a booth and everyone agreed to go to New York for the weekend to support him. A few of you made it to New York before the storms would supposed to hit only to be met with an issue at the hotel. Instead of the five rooms you’d reserved they only had two. It had been a terrible, stressful weekend for the most part.
“Before the snow started, you went with me to Central Park because I had once mentioned that I’d always wanted to go. We walked around until our fingers were frozen. You didn’t have to do that, you hate the cold but you still went with me anyway.” You explained softly laughing fondly at the memory. Spencer had obviously been cold from the moment you left your hotel but chose to walk with you anyway. He’d even wrapped his scarf around you and bought you a hot chocolate.
“I wasn’t gonna let you go by yourself. You had literally never been to New York before.” He protested just as he had then.
“Our weekly Saturday movie nights started because I hadn’t seen Twilight.” You changed the subject to laughed and he jokingly groaned while shaking his head.
“Don’t remind me! I don’t understand how you could have never seen those movies.” He grimaced but you just sighed tossing your phone in the couch before reaching forward to grab his hands.
“Spencer.” You started to say but paused to think of the right words to say.
“I do.” He joked before his eyes widened as if he didn’t mean to say that out loud. You both fell into a fit of laughter as you smiled.
“The first thing I want-no need to say is I’m sorry. I’m so sorry that I made you feel awful all week for something that isn’t your fault. I should have talked to you, told you I was going through something. But I didn’t because I knew you would want to help me. You didn’t do anything wrong and the true is, somewhere between seeing that clip from the live stream and writing a song last Friday…I realized I was in love with you too. It was a change, one that I wasn’t expecting. One I didn’t know how to handle. So instead of handling it, I tried to run from it. But that just made me miss you. I was so scared of messing things up that I pushed you away and I missed you. Spence, you are my favorite person in the entire world. It literally took writing a song for me to realize how much I loved you and then I spent a week trying to come to terms with that fact. Because that’s what it is, a fact. Like how the sky is blue, grass is green, trees have leaves in the spring, and I’m in love with Spencer Agnew. And yes I hate change, change is the most terrifying thing in the world to me. But I don’t think this is a change. At least not a new one. To me, I think I have always loved you, always wanted you. And now I think I’m just suddenly saying it out loud.” You shrugged as if this was all the easiest thing in the world to do. As if you hadn’t confessed to being in love with a man for nearly a decade. And perhaps it was that easy, maybe he was right. It really is so easy.
“You love me to?” He smiled excitedly. You trailed your hands from where they were connected to his. Running them up his arms before allowing them to rest on his shoulders. Your thumbs tracing gentle shapes along his neck as he put his hand on your hips.
“Yes, I really do.” You nodded
“And you wrote a song?” He questioned in shock while slowly leaning towards you. Or maybe you were leaning towards him? Who’s to say.
“I did. It’s super poetic and everything.” You murmured almost jokingly. Your lips mere inches apart.
“Can I hear it?” He smiled softly, his eyes completely focused on your lips.
“I think we can make that happen.” You whispered against his lips. Finally closing the gap as you closed your eyes.
Kissing Spencer didn’t feel the way people often describe a first kiss. You didn’t feel like fireworks or butterflies. You didn’t feel that rush of adrenaline people always talk about. It didn’t feel like magic or like your nerve endings were on fire. It didn’t feel the way people described in movies.
No, it felt…calm. It felt like warmth. Like peaceful sunshine and soft rays of light. It felt like your souls were reaching out as two halves who had finally become whole once more. It no longer felt like change, but evolution. The world around you had fade creating a space where no one existed but the two of you.
Pulling away once air became a necessity rather than a quiet luxury. Your eyes slowly opened to meet his and you smiled.
“This is like the best day of my life.” He whispered earning a soft laugh from you in response.
You studied him for a long time, eyes trailing over every centimeter of his face. Then you leaned your head against his shoulder. The two of you now standing in the middle of your living room, just holding each other.
“Hey Spencer?” You whispered after a moment of peaceful silence.
“Hm?” He mumbled softly, resting his chin against the top of your head. You could feel his thumbs tracing soothing circles against your back.
“Do you want to be my boyfriend now?” You asked as you tilted your head back to look at him.
“I-yeah! Absolutely I do, more than anything in the world.” He agreed with the most serious expression you’d ever seen from him.
“Good. I’d like it if you were.” You whispered as you both smiled wildly at each other.
A knock at your door burst the bubble you had been in and you frowned.
“Oh right, I ordered food!” You laughed pulling away from Spencer to head to the door.
Grabbing the food, you made your way back to the living room where you found Spencer lounging on your couch.
“So…do I get to hear this song now?” He asked looking up from his phone with a smirk.
“Yes, but only if I get to pick the movie we watch after.” You bargained and he threw his head back in laughter. As if you didn’t always pick the movies.
“Fine, but only because you’re cute and I love you.” He agreed
“I love you too.”
