I just made my first harvest from my fall-winter garden AND it’s a plant I’ve never grown before!! I’m so happy!! It’s a small radish harvest because they were mostly just marking out carrot and beet rows, but there are lots of tops and I’m gonna figure out how to cook them too!

SPAW Day 2:

I planted hard neck garlic and Egyptian walking onions

I also harvested some of my swamp water for the pumpkins. It actually just smells like vinegar this time instead of the putrid stench like usual. Also it is purple because I had some beets in there 😂

I did it yall i finally have a composter aka a big tub under my sink i hope this works out.. got stupidly excited when i got to put the scraps from making veggie lasagna in there. 

also scattered a good couple handfuls of wildflower seeds (native ofc) and bought a big bag of spring bulbs to plant out maybe tomorrow or the day after

oh and i put out some baby strawberry plants and they were gone within an hour, although i suspect one person took the whole thing instead of yknow... one or two individual plants but oh well, so long as they'll enjoy them thats fine by me!

SPAW 2020 - September

Sunday:

Signed up to volunteer with grocery shopping/delivery to local elderly

Thrifted some clothes with the fam. It’s an annual event, and we had a lot of fun going out.

Had tea with my grandparents. I brought some vegan butternut squash soup, and my grandmother made some vegan coffee cake. A lovely time :) We talked about ageism in relation to recent developments in her job.

Monday:

Beat back an overgrown bush that was engulfing our gas tank

Started an herb garden! So far I have rosemary (my favorite), fennel, chives, and mint.

Mended some clothes. A few loose buttons, a few patches, and experimented with bleaching

Tuesday:

Added infosec extensions to all my family's computers. They’re loving not having so many ads, and the next step will have to be educating them about basic infosec.

Foraged for whatever I could find on my walk (wild grapes, viburnums, acorns, chicken of the woods) and spent some time ID-ing new plants.

Wednesday:

Purchased a binder for my friend’s birthday!

Attended my first “Ready for 100” virtual meeting

Thursday:

Read more Leftist theory and group organizing zines

Made some acorn flour and viburnum tea from what I foraged on Tuesday. Hoping to make some acorn bread, and the tea is for cramps.

Friday:

Was planning to start a Buy Nothing group in my area, only to be pleasantly surprised to find out that one had already been started just two weeks ago! Eagerly offered some old kitchen appliances that we no longer use.

Had a conversation with friends and fam introducing them to the concept of “Land Back”.

Saturday:

Helped one of our elderly neighbors move TVs out of her house for our town’s E-waste Collection Day

Helped clean out my parents’ garage for the winter and donated a few bags of old good clothes we found

Started Hugelkultur garden for next year

Fixed our toilet!

I was really low-energy on Wednesday and Thursday, so I didn’t get to do everything I had planned. But I’m quite satisfied with what I was able to accomplish given my usual pace. I definitly want to do more with the garden and rehabilitate our town’s seed library. I’d like to join the IWW as soon as I get a steady income to pay the dues. All in all, I had a fun week! It’s nice to see the fruit of my labor, even if it’s just watching the gears turning in people’s minds. Happy SPAW, everyone! Until next time.

Solarpunk Action Week!

I didn’t really do planning very well but here are some things so far:

- Planted lettuce and arugula seeds

- Made signs out of scrap wood for my compost piles (they’re v cute)

- Ordered worms for my compost piles

- Shared SPAW info and solarpunk books with friends who didn’t know about it!

- Bought a new solarpunk anthology from a local black owned bookstore

Plans for next few days:

- Propagate the ginger that is sprouting in my cabinet

- Jar-test my soil to find my balance of sand-silt-clay

- Scout locations for guerrilla gardening

- Donate to wildfire survivors

SPAW Day 2 pt 2:

I recycle all the clean paper products that come through my home, but my recycling program does not accept soiled paper. That means pizza boxes cannot be recycled because they always get greasy.

So I have been creating a path with them!

My dad helped me cut the stepping logs from my stumps and they are good for holding them in place until they lose their desire to fly away. I plan to start a mushroom growing area at the end of the path in the spring for peak fae vibes.

spaw day 3: 

-collected some wildflower seeds and tried to plant some bulbs but the ground is bone-dry so i will postpone that to the weekend after we've hopefully had some rain. 

-did remember to leave a few painted stones along the way and put up more stickers where people had the nerve to scratch them off 

-got some soil and shredded a big thing of old paper (by hand) for my compost

-completed an online refresher on first aid
